"A new destination on South Broadway, Broadway Roxy officially opened yesterday at 554 South Broadway and occupies the former home of Syntax Physic Opera. I note owner Paula Vrakas designed the space to include local photos from the 1920s and promises “an epic library ladder” when it is complete; there’s a full bar and a main stage where live music will play every night the venue is open. Chef Christopher Rasmussen (formerly of Highland Tap & Burger) is cooking a selection of New American small plates meant for sharing — fried brussel sprouts, pastrami sliders, and “stems and flappers” (a lively term for chicken wings) — plus burgers and salads; Grandma’s Meatballs, made with beef, pork, veal and red sauce and adapted by Rasmussen to be gluten free from his grandmother’s 100-old recipe, are highlighted, and the majority of the menu is gluten free or can be made gluten free upon request under the restaurant’s scratch-cooking model. The cocktail program is Prohibition-inspired with classics like a Bees Knees, an Old Fashioned and an Aviation. Music remains a major draw and the venue will continue to bring former Syntax favorites such as Anthony Ruptak, Weird Touch and Mile High Soul Club to “that stage,” which Vrakas calls “one of the best in Denver.” Broadway Roxy is the second Roxy location (Vrakas also owns Roxy Encinitas, which dates back to 1978), is currently open Tuesday–Saturday from 5 p.m. to close, plans weekend brunch this fall and eventual seven-night-a-week service with an all-day Monday happy hour once Mondays are added." - Georgina Rupp
