"Tucked into a window of the warehouse-sized Skechers store in Gardena (near the 110/405 intersection), I found a semi-secret Food Spot that opened May 3, 2023, serving Costco-style, shockingly cheap American fast food without a membership. There’s almost always a line for $2.50 cheese pizza slices and $2.50 Nathan’s all-beef hot dogs, and I thought the $5 double cheeseburger was generously sized and good value; the pizza’s pepperoni curls like a NYC slice but the crust could use more flavor. Beyond the staples, the well-fried chicken sandwich on a Portuguese-style bun ($6) has a golden-brown crust and is big enough to need two hands, and the Nashville hot chicken ($6.50) arrives with a lightly greased red-tinted crust and dill pickles — both are meaty and satisfying; fries come crisp and can be ordered plain or topped with garlic and Parmesan. I liked the thoughtful $7 Cobb salad (named for Manhattan Beach) with bacon, black beans, cheese, corn, tomato, and seasoned chicken, but the churros lacked the proper crunch and the soft serve tasted icy. The operation uses name-brand ingredients (Nathan’s hot dogs, certified Angus beef, Ghirardelli chocolate, Coca-Cola) and everything I tried tasted pretty great — definitely better than Costco and on par with a good sports-venue concessions stand — which helps explain the steady crowds and occupied outdoor seating. Food Spot is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 19000 South Vermont Avenue, Gardena, CA 90248." - Matthew Kang
