"I discovered the first brick-and-mortar location of DuO Confections in the southwest corner of Liberty Public Market, where they now make fresh Hong Kong-style bubble waffles. The shop — which got its start at the Sunday Lane Field Park Market and still sells treats from a portable, see-through “bubble tent” — pairs egg-shaped crispy waffles with premium gelato, which is the origin of its name. Waffle flavors include original, green tea, chocolate, and black sesame, and the waffles are used as cones to hold scoops of gelato and other sweet toppings; custom combos include All That Matcha with matcha gelato, chocolate-covered strawberry, mochi, and a Pocky stick, and Movie Night, which fills an original bubble waffle with vanilla gelato, caramel corn, and a Coke syringe. The café also serves acai bowls, smoothies, and other specialty drinks. The Liberty Public Market grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, November 30 — the first 20 guests will receive a free specialty bubble waffle and the shop is offering $2 off any waffle that Saturday and Sunday — and current hours are Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Owner Long Jiang said the company plans to open additional locations next year and is looking at the La Jolla/UTC and Carlsbad areas." - Candice Woo
