"At Disneyland's newest eatery, Tropical Hideaway, which opens Friday, December 21, I found a tiki-charm-filled space that draws on its early-90s Tahitian Terrace roots and the most recent Aladdin-themed character restaurant, complete with torch-lined pathways and a waterfall entryway. The menu is inspired by the “tropical rivers of the world” and the neighboring Jungle Cruise, and offers raspberry and orange soft-serve for fans of Pineapple Dole Whip (utter “spiced up” to get candied bacon crumbles), the Twisted Ambush—a pineapple-orange sundae over mandarin oranges, pineapple, mango, and lychee with crystallized hibiscus, toasted shredded coconut bits, and Pocky-like cookies—and a trio of steamed bao: the Spiced Vegetable Bao with a samosa-like filling of curried chickpeas, braised vegetables and peas, spelt, and barley; the Chicken Bao filled with chicken, butternut squash, and fresh herbs; and the Bulgogi Beef Bao packed with sweet chilies, potatoes, and carrots (there’s an extra 59-cent charge for the salsarojo, a misnomer for a delightful gochujang dipping sauce). I also liked the Chilled Ramen Shaker—drizzle the onion-soy-wasabi sauce over fresh vegetables and ramen noodles and shake the cup to mix everything, topped with togarashi cashews—and the dessert lumpia, filled with cream cheese and roasted pineapple, coated in cinnamon and sugar and served with a dipping sauce reminiscent of liquefied Dole Whip." - Carlye Wisel
