"I learned that a new gelato and coffee shop opened in Corktown this month, bringing an array of creamy gelato, espresso drinks, and small breakfast and lunch bites to the neighborhood. Located as part of the Elton Park mixed-use development near the longstanding UFO Factory, the interior—designed by Berardi + Partners—pays a subtle homage to the classic ice cream parlor with pastel-colored subway tiles and a wall of photos of famous Detroiters including Berry Gordy, Henry Ford, and Grace Lee Boggs; an enclosed patio has windows that can open completely when weather permits. The shop is the creation of Tom Isaia, a longtime figure in Michigan coffee who studied gelato-making in Bologna and sources the coffee flavor from his Coffee Express roasting company. All gelatos are made on-site with fresh ingredients; the current menu features five flavors including pistachio, coffee (sourced from Coffee Express), vanilla cherry swirl, and lemon custard, with seasonal varieties added and plans for as many as 14 flavors in summer. The menu also includes non-dairy sorbet, specials like gelato cookie sandwiches, espresso drinks, drip coffee, affogato, and an assortment of paninis and baked goods, and it operates daily with extended hours on weekends." - Serena Maria Daniels
