"Just one month in, this casual French bistro already feels at home in its two-story U Street space (previously Baby Shank), pairing a concise three-course format with a D.C. twist: unlimited fries for those who opt for the $45 prix fixe (everything is also available a la carte, but without the bottomless frites). Concept director Raphael Francois keeps prices modest and the focus on classics like tarte flambee, pate de campagne, skirt steak, white wine moules, and a “hamburger double.” Starters done well include a crispy baguette with Normandy-churned butter, glistening olives, and a delicate tuna carpaccio that reaches the rim of its big circular plate; among mains, the juicy pressed half chicken shines when it meets mustard and herbs. Much of the talented Baby Shank bartending team came over, so the $14 Illy espresso martinis are as good as I remember, and a big Hugo Spritz bursting with mint (St. Germain, sparkling wine, soda water) is wonderfully refreshing—just be sure to stir it first. Vintage prints, soft lighting, and chic sofa seating conjure a lived-in Parisian cafe, with a sketch of the historic Flatiron building it occupies appearing on menus and postcards. Insider tip: enjoy dinner with live jazz on Thursday nights upstairs, and watch for a daytime cafe component in early 2026 to bring coffee and flaky croissants upon entry." - Tierney Plumb
