"Opening Jan. 6, I report that wife-and-husband team Olivia Maki and Mike Reis are launching Oakland’s first bar dedicated to cider: Redfield Cider Bar & Bottle Shop. Located in a former shoe store, they will stock roughly 150 ciders from classic regions such as France, England, and Spain as well as Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, and New England; about 16 taps will let them pour tasting flights and bottle pours onsite while a huge selection of bottles and cans will be available to-go. The name nods to their podcast, Redfield Radio, and their industry experience is clear: Maki is co-chair for the cider category for the Good Food Awards and has managed events for Bi-Rite’s 18 Reasons, while Reis is an advanced cicerone who previously led beverage programs at SF’s Monk’s Kettle and Abbot’s Cellar. To widen appeal they’ll also serve some beer, wine, and simple, regionally influenced food like sandwiches, salads, and small plates, and hours will be noon–11 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and noon–midnight Friday–Saturday." - Janelle Bitker
