"A vacate notice appeared on the door of Greene Grape Provisions, a Fort Greene supermarket celebrated for its specialty items, local products, and artisanal cheese counter; the sign, dated Monday, August 3, indicates the entire mixed-use building at 767 Fulton Street (between South Portland and South Oxford streets) was deemed “imminently perilous to life” and ordered vacated with re-entry prohibited. Inspectors reported that “‘a number three wall’ in the residential part of the building was in severe state of disrepair,” noting the rear wall had separated and cracked on the second and third floors and those walls were sloping, which prompted the temporary closure. Owner Amy Bennett says the problem began when an employee noticed a crack, an engineer deemed the situation critical, and she expects the supermarket to be shut for at least around two months while the landlord completes emergency stabilizing work and then a longer foundation rebuild — timelines that depend on the Department of Buildings’ permitting; she’s also worried about employees and vendors and is seeking permission to retrieve items to give to staff, while perishables are being donated to community fridges and some rescued by City Harvest. The adjoining Greene Grape Wine & Spirits will remain open." - Emma Orlow
