"Field Day, the neighborhood bar and restaurant owned by Rob Bouton of Charleston’s Queen Street Grocery, closes this weekend after just two years on Highland in the Old Fourth Ward. Bouton made the announcement on Instagram Friday morning. The restaurant took over the former Across the Street Mexican restaurant space and resides next door to Bouton’s neighborhood market, Everyday. It’s unclear whether the market will also close. “Opening just a month before Covid started, we had extremely high hopes, but it just didn’t work out,” Bouton tells Eater. “We are extremely proud of our staff, the quality of our menus and all the friends and fans that continually supported us even though the outlook was bleak.” Field Day opened at the end of 2019, four months prior to the start of the pandemic, serving an eclectic menu from chef Mike Pitts (BeetleCat, Nobu, Momofuku), including kimchi grilled cheese, bone-in monkfish, classic cheeseburgers, and French fries topped with creme fraiche and trout roe. Like the food, the cocktails at Field Day ranged from funky takes on the 50/50 martini and Old Fashioned to dive bar classics and frozen cocktails and patio drinks in the summer. “Mike was tiring of the fine dining grind and wanted to open a classic, everyday bar and restaurant within his own neighborhood, some place where his neighbors could afford to eat at more than once a month,” Bouton told Eater in 2019. “It was the same thing I had done with Queen Street in Charleston.” Field Days closes after service on Sunday, January 23." - Beth McKibben
