"At the Ballard Locks, the sockeye salmon count hit a record low at the end of 2020: out of 22,950 sockeye counted there, only about 3,000 made it to the mouth of the Cedar, and roughly half usually die before they can reproduce, prompting warnings that “extinction looms” as predators, development, and climate change imperil the species; a $31 million hatchery project from Seattle Public Utilities launched in 2011 has not delivered the desired results, and while greater awareness is a start, there doesn’t seem to be a clear pathway to reverse the trend." - Gabe Guarente
