"Founded in May 2019, I saw Mujeres Brew Club begin as a community group for Latinas and other women interested in craft beer, initially hosting classes and events on the back patio of Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan. Its move into the former Alta Brewing Company space inside the Bread & Salt building gives the group a dedicated taproom and classroom where I expect it to continue hosting meetings and launch new educational programs. As Estela Davila shared, the club was created because going to a bar can sometimes be intimidating for Latinas and other women; the inaugural meeting far exceeded expectations with 67 attendees versus the 10–15 originally hoped for. Once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted the group plans to hold large meetings without special accommodations, run a behind-the-bar work experience program and a brewing program powered by the on-site system, and transition to full taproom operations pending paperwork. Beer on draft will start with Border X brews and later include MBC member-made beers, the food program is being developed (potentially cold platters or a food truck), and the club will formally incorporate as an educational nonprofit to further its mission of educating women about craft beer." - Mario A.
