"Opened last week in the former Sun Liquor Distillery space on Capitol Hill, Michael Klebeck's new fried-dough shop Half and Half Doughnut Co. (516 E. Pike St.) bakes its treats on site using organic Northwest ingredients as much as possible. The menu features pineapple fritters, Mexican chocolate old fashioned doughnuts, and cinnamon twists, with flavors expected to shift seasonally. Klebeck, who cofounded Top Pot with his brother, hired baker Alex Schwartzstein to oversee the menu; Schwartzstein also makes lemon blueberry and orange gingerbread scones, biscuits served with jam, and a few cookie options — including a gluten-free pine nut shortbread cookie. The offerings skew savory as well, with breakfast sandwiches (including one with sun-dried tomato pesto, aioli, egg, white cheddar and a bacon add-on option) and sous vide eggs with various toppings like bacon and cheese, plus a full coffee menu of espresso drinks, chai, and hot chocolate." - Megan Hill
