"Established in 2019 by Janet and Jonathan Martinez, the doughnut and sandwich shop Barrio Donas began in Clairemont and is planning to open a South Bay location in National City by October. I love how the menu celebrates Mexican-American culture, translating familiar flavors into doughnut form: the Arroz Con Leche doughnut is filled with rice pudding and topped with dulce de leche, while the Gansito is a chocolate-glazed doughnut filled with strawberry jam and vanilla cream. There are also vegan options, such as the hibiscus-glazed Jamaica, and pan dulce like the sugar-coated, Nutella-filled bigote, a croissant-shaped Mexican sweet bread. I appreciate that the shop offers more than doughnuts — tortas like the La Norteña, which sandwiches machaca with scrambled eggs, beans, mayo, and mozzarella, and homemade tamales — and they plan to bring new drinks to National City in addition to their Mexican hot chocolate and spiced Café de Olla." - Candice Woo
