"Steps from Metro Saint-Michel, I found Sak’s Sandwicherie serves colourful “updated Cambodian cuisine” at a fair price. The ultra-simple menu fuses traditional flavours with healthy ingredients: a set menu of sandwiches, noodles, or rice with nine meat or vegetarian additions — expect sharp Southeast Asian touches like lemongrass or cilantro paired with chicken or beef — and other options include imperial rolls, “Soupe Sak’s” (with a house broth), a salad, and an assortment of ready-to-eat items. Meal-sized portions are all under $12. The compact, window-lit space has an open kitchen and a woody, sharply designed interior that feels more like a Mile End or Plateau counter spot than most places in St-Michel. Opened in September 2016 by Virak Bou and his family (’Sak’ is his mother’s maiden name), the family developed the concept, reformulated traditional Cambodian sandwiches into the menu, and handle everything from buying and preparing groceries to serving; Bou acknowledges the long hours but says the venture has gained traction through word of mouth. The family plans to take part in Montreal food events and add a patio for warmer months." - Stephane Lavoie
