"Situated in a 16,000-square-foot space, this new roller-rink/nightclub/concert venue (opening at the end of the month) doubles as what will soon be New York’s only year-round indoor roller rink and can hold about 1,200 people. It channels grand disco-era roller rinks with retro neon carpeting, black lights, a popcorn-scented interior, a restroom DJ booth dubbed “Club Flush,” and a rinkside snack stand serving arcade fare like Frito pie and several kinds of hot dogs. Nights are nightclub-forward — DJs spin pop and R&B while patrons sip cocktails with names like “Skaterade” and “Purple Rain” (limited to two drinks if you’re wearing skates and you must sign a liability waiver) — but daytime sessions are all-ages; founder Varun Kataria (who also runs Turk’s Inn and the Sultan Room) says he drew inspiration from Burning Man and emphasizes a communal, therapeutic vibe. Skaters of all ages and skill levels show off tricks, choreographed line dances, and synchronized skating, creating an unpretentious, intergenerational scene that aims to be a friendly alternative to gatekept techno spots and sprawling megaclubs, even as caution about skating while intoxicated is frequently offered." - Brock Colyar
