"A beloved, old-school Flatiron lunch counter and New York institution has closed, with a fat “For lease” sign in the storefront and an uncertain future. The owner, Warren Chiu — a hotel scion whose father founded Warwick Hotels — bought the storied diner in 2018 pledging to keep it unchanged, but he reportedly hasn’t paid rent since before the pandemic and revenues had already fallen. The menu was later brought to the Warwick International Hotel in San Francisco, and the space is now being shopped to new operators while the landlord reportedly wants to reopen the original location. Because the operator may not hold the intellectual-property rights, classic items such as the tuna melt and the cream-cheese–and–chopped-olive sandwich might yet return under new stewardship." - Chris Crowley
