"The Red Lion & Sun is something of a Highgate Village institution, which means that you’re just as likely to have your pint interrupted by a flock of buggies cruising by as a low-key Jude Law sighting. In winter, the working fireplace sizzles and every trip to the bar will inevitably involve long-jumping over snoozing spaniels, but this pub really comes into its own during the sauvignon blanc sunshine season. There’s a charming, leafy garden out back but the place to be is the marquee out front. It’s Highgate’s unofficial perma-wedding reception—bottles of Provence rosé thrive, parents bob babies on their knees while necking Jersey oysters, and all the little Amélies and Alfies present nibble on panko-fried fish goujons. The British food is a hop, jump, and lemon butter leap above your average pub grub and it’s worth committing to one of the hefty pork chops or whole fish sharers. That being said, we’ve never had a bad time with their juicy, pink cheeseburger and a glass of equally juicy Gamay. Hiding behind its very own melted cheese curtain, the burger itself is an absolute wedge, super tender, and smothered in a sweet, subtly spicy burger sauce. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Chicken Schnitzel, Mixed Salad, Crispy Shallots, Jalapeño And Coriander Mayo, Salsa Less schnitzel more panko poultry frisbee, this is a Red Lion & Sun classic. No two schnitzels here are ever the same, each with its own unique crispy corners and shapes, but the lemony coriander drizzle always hits." - Heidi Lauth Beasley
