G&Y Bakery & Cafe - Review - Chinatown - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"If there’s one thing that G&Y seems to get, it’s efficiency. The longstanding cha chaan teng in Chinatown is a frictionless operation. You’re assigned a table as soon as you walk in—oftentimes alongside some strangers to maximize space. A staff member will ask for your order before you’ve even had a chance to crack open the laminated menu, and dishes arrive within minutes. Sure, none of the food would make a highlight reel of Hong Kong-style classics, but it’s all solid and filling, and at less than $15, a great choice for something quick in the area. Focus on the plate combos—namely the minced beef with green beans that’s served with a glossy, garlicky gravy (get it with rice instead of noodles). Neighborhood regulars dominate this spot most hours of the day, so if you value having your own table, try coming during off-hours and avoid weekends when you’ll also need to compete with tourists for a seat. video credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong
