Family Coffee Truck

"This spot on the corner of 135th and Lenox Ave. in Harlem looks like an ordinary breakfast cart, but beyond the coffee and glazed pastries, there’s a little menu of Mexican food plastered on the side. In a neighborhood without great taco options, the brothers who run Family Coffee make some incredibly satisfying ones, loaded with carefully griddled meat, guacamole, cream, and cotija. Get some smoky red and bright green salsa on the side, and they’ll tuck in a couple of red and green chiles, too. You can get steak, pork, and chicken, but we like the chorizo best—it’s enjoyable in a hearty quesadilla too, and also available in a solid chorizo-egg-and-cheese sandwich. The truck is stationed near Harlem Hospital from 3am to 3:30pm, and you can take your food to the Howard Bennett Playground around the corner. Food Rundown photo credit: Sonal Shah Tacos You can get these with flour or corn tortillas, and we like them both ways. The meats have enough juiciness, and the best thing about these is the abundant amount of fresh toppings piled on top. One is a significant snack, and two or three make a meal. photo credit: Sonal Shah Quesadilla One wedge of the chorizo quesadilla is enough to keep us full for at least two hours. It comes floating in oil from the sausage, melty with cheese, and with a generous channel of oniony guacamole on the side. photo credit: Sonal Shah Pork Torta Stuffed liberally, this is a filling meal, but it’s just a little too dry and soggy at the same time to be our favorite thing here." - Sonal Shah
