"When Ma-Makan recently extended its elusive opening hours to a weekend dinner service, it was the best news we’d received since finding out we didn’t have to spend Christmas with the in-laws this year. Those of us who don’t live within lunch-hour walking distance could at last fill that kaya butter toast–shaped hole in our lives (believe them when they say the sweet dish can be eaten as a starter). You can’t book ahead, so just turn up, join the queue, grab a table on the leafy Platz, and interchangeably spoon hainanese chicken rice and nasi lemak into your mouth in a way that may appear manic to passers-by.
