"Mikami is a solid Japanese restaurant with the sleek look of a typical River North spot. Luckily for any South Looper, this minimalist and inviting enough space is in their backyards. At the bar, blobby light fixtures hover above couples sharing chicken tsukune skewers and unagi donburi. And in the hotel lobby-like dining room, friends dig into bowls of tori paitan or tonkotsu ramen. The food might not become a big part of the conversation, but it’s tasty enough to fuel chit-chat under Mikami’s soft lighting. Food Rundown Tonkotsu Ramen This tonkotsu is creamy with a strong pork flavor. It’s topped with chashu, corn, and some wood ear mushrooms that add texture. The noodles are on the softer side, but score high on the slurpability scale. photo credit: John Ringor Tori Paitan Ramen If you want something lighter, get this. The chicken bone broth is savory but not too rich, and the chicken pieces floating on top have an excellent bite. photo credit: John Ringor Unagi Donburi Don’t want soup, but got dragged to a ramen spot? You can still have a solid meal with some donburi. We like the unagi one most—the eel is grilled well with a smoky and sweet flavor and comes with sides of rice, tomatoes, and a salad." - John Ringor
