"On paper, Tandoori Lounge sounds like an exciting place. It’s open until 3am, house beers are $2, and the name makes you think like you’ll be hanging out in a room full of lounge chairs surrounded by an endless supply of charred meats. The reality is more sedate. It’s a relatively quiet dining room in a South Austin strip mall, but don’t let that stop you from turning your meal into a party. The menu features a mix of North and South Indian classics, plus a handful of Indo-Chinese dishes and a dedicated section for things cooked in the tandoor oven. Stop by for a well-seasoned and cooked half-chicken and some lamb vindaloo on a weeknight, or pop in after a long night out and order anything and everything that speaks to your late-night brain in search of sustenance. photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel Food Rundown photo credit: Richard Casteel Half Tandoori Chicken The chicken is well-seasoned and perfectly cooked, with juicy meat and little bits of char around the edges. We usually get the chicken but we’ve enjoyed everything we’ve had off the tandoori section. photo credit: Richard Casteel Lamb Vindaloo This is a solid vindaloo that won’t win any awards but also won’t disappoint. The lamb is fairly tender, and the gravy is flavorful. Garlic Naan It’s hot and fluffy, with bubbled-up and charred edges and a generous amount of garlic. It’s the strong supporting actor it needs to be." - Nicolai McCrary
