Offering a glamorous summer sleeper service between Rome and Marseille, this Riviera Express train runs weekly, departing Rome’s Termini station on Friday evenings and arriving on the French Mediterranean coast by Saturday morning, then leaving Marseille on Saturday evenings and reaching Rome in the early hours. It features sleeping cars with private compartments and more affordable couchettes in the overnight section starting from around $48, and once the nighttime portion is over, the train’s layout changes to include lounges and first- and second-class seats. The full scenic route after leaving Rome includes stops at Genoa, Savona, Alassia, Imperia, Sanremo, and Ventimiglia in Italy, before crossing into France and stopping at Menton, Monaco, Nice, Cannes, Saint-Raphaël–Valescure, Toulon and finally Marseille, running as a special seasonal service from July 4 to August 30, with tickets sold via the Trenitalia website. - Liv Kelly
