"A Benedictine convent founded in the 11th century, Castel Badia spent two hundred years in ruin before its recent restoration. The original abbesses ruled with unusual autonomy for their time, one even defied the bishopric in the 15th century. Today, twenty-eight rooms occupy the reconstructed fortress, each different in layout and tone, balancing exposed stonework with contemporary furnishings. Seventeen gardens surround the property, including one devoted to medicinal herbs. Fragments of the old chapel and crypt remain open to explore. Five minutes from Plan de Corones, the castle overlooks San Lorenzo di Sebato and the valley below." - Tablet Hotels
