"My husband and I rode the Mount Hood Railroad's bright red, side-by-side tandem railbikes in Hood River, Oregon, and it felt like pedaling a recumbent bike with metal wheels providing stability; you don't steer, you can take photos while pedaling, and there's an optional pedal-assist motor for hills. The 100-year-old railway was bought and repurposed for railbiking by local Scott Webster, who currently runs 13 bikes and fields thousands of reservations months in advance. A guide leads the way as a gentle pedal sets the pace — we averaged about 12 mph and completed the entire 11-mile route in just over two hours — and the ride is quiet, low-impact, nonpolluting, and appropriate for people of all ages, with a hand brake and plenty of space between bikes." - Rebecca Deurlein Rebecca Deurlein Rebecca Deurlein believes everything is interesting, and she loves finding the story everywhere she goes.
