"After a localized hydrothermal explosion near the Sapphire Pool on Tuesday morning, I learned that the Biscuit Basin area has been closed, with parking lots, trails, and boardwalks shut while park staff assess damage to the boardwalks. Videos shared on social media show large plumes of boiling liquid, steam, mud, and rock fragments bursting into the air and raining down; fortunately the NPS reports no injuries and has not provided a timeline for reopening. Located just north of the still-open Old Faithful geysers and about 30 miles west of Yellowstone Lake, Biscuit Basin is known for several geysers and colorful pools and is popular for a 0.6-mile hike that leads past many hydrothermal features." - Michael Cappetta Michael Cappetta Michael Cappetta is a travel writer with over 10 years of experience in journalism and television news.
