"Set on 130 acres between the New Forest and the cliffs and beaches of the South Coast, I found Chewton Glen to be a true English countryside escape, with rooms overlooking manicured gardens and classic croquet lawns — and its private tree houses are the upgrade to book. These are not glamping cabins but Relais & Châteaux accommodations: they include personal concierge service, fully stocked kitchenettes, forest-view hot tubs, en-suite deep soaking tubs where I watched a movie while bathing, and all-day access to pristine indoor spa pools. Visiting in December with a golden retriever (the tree houses are dog-friendly) meant muddy, wellie-filled walks to see the resident sheep, but it was a treat to return to a log-burning fire in the laid-back Kitchen for a hearty lunch and later to the elegant Dining Room where executive head chef Luke Matthews put on roast New Forest bronze turkey and confit duck followed by a perfect Christmas pudding. A picnic-ready breakfast hamper is delivered to each tree house, and I enjoyed fresh-baked morning treats from my fluffy white bed in a warm robe as raindrops fell on the forest 35 feet below." - Nina Ruggiero Nina Ruggiero Travel + Leisure Senior Editorial Director Nina Ruggiero oversees T+L's award-winning travel content across digital platforms.
