"Opened just a few weeks ago near Montepetriolo, this castle-like Umbrian resort immediately feels like a medieval Italian village preserved in aspic. I arrived on a baking-hot summer afternoon in the hotel’s air-conditioned shuttle and rolled up to an imposing gatehouse, complete with portcullis, before a winding road led to two monumental Lebanese cedars shading the main building. What looks like a remarkably well-maintained medieval palace was largely built in the early 20th century for the noble Rossi-Scotti family to deliver historic-castle atmosphere with modern conveniences. First converted to a hotel in the early 2000s—its landscaping now fully grown in—it had been dormant for two years while the owners, the group behind the Londra Palace in Venice and The Place in Florence, carried out a head-to-toe refurbishment, halving the room count to just 40 generously proportioned rooms and suites." - Liam Hess
