9 Best Things to Do in Anchorage, Alaska - AFAR

"Don't let its strip mall location fool you; it's one of the hardest places to get a table in town—and that was before the owner/chef, Nathan Bentley, was named a 2024 James Beard Foundation Best Chef semi-finalist. The dinner menu features entrées like king crab mac and cheese or halibut in saffron butter, with lemon-herb polenta, Castelvetrano tapenade, and asparagus. Be sure to get dessert. The Pop Rocks–topped prosecco cheesecake is a winner." - Bailey Berg

Red King Crab Leg is excellent, especially when served together with the Sweet Prawn Bisque. We ordered one cocktail because we had to drive back to the hotel. It was so nice of them to split it into two glasses. The house made (free) bread was good too, especially with their special butter cream. One of the best dinner I’ve had in a while. Ohhh and don’t forget about the dessert Pear. It’s not too sweet (the cream, shortbread, and the wine-poached piece of pear), which makes it the perfect dessert for me.

The food was good. There is still room for improvement. But overall experience is great. I highly recommend the bone marrow appetizer. The bread 🍞 is also on point.

Google
The food is absolutely top notch. The service is friendly, fast and professional. The restaurant ambiance isn’t fancy, but it’s relaxed. The sound levels are moderate and would work well for a date or business dinner. Our group didn’t try any of the beef dishes, but the scallops, black cod and halibut were perfectly cooked with rich and tasty sauces that matched a nice white wine perfectly. We had the gnocchi with an aged Parmesan sauce as an appetizer I could have happily stuffed myself with as a main course. The only dish that didn’t wow me was an orange fennel salad. That said, they served absolutely superb coffee made with a French press at the table.

Google
10/10 food and service, dine in or takeout. Love their lunch specials and burgers. Must try the bone marrow appetizer. Definitely the best food in Anchorage.

Google
Atmosphere was nice and the service was amazing our waiter was great and very attentive. However the place was dead on a Saturday night and I understand why. The Alaksa king salmon was giving very much farm raised but priced at $58 and portions were small. Our screw top bottle of wine was priced at $60. For the price point you can find better options for food.

Google
Pretty exquisite and food was creatively crafted. Well done. The Australian wagyu wasn't was great compared to Japanese Wagyu. But that is just the meat.. not the restaurant nor the chef. Overall great experience!! Thank you

Google
Service was friendly but the food was superb. Cambozola and roasted garlic was exquisite. Shredded brussels sprouts salad was a bit salty but delicious. We enjoyed the red king crab but it’s a little overpriced for what it is. I loved the Alaskan white salmon special. The fillet mignon with sun dried tomato chèvre butter could be to the perfection if it were a little less salty. Overall well prepared exquisite food.

Google
Come for amazing food! Gina was awesome. So knowledgeable and fun! We enjoyed the fresh oysters, Butternut Squash Salad, Prawn Bisque, King Crab Mac and Cheese and Weathervane Scallops. The Sesame Meringue Tart was a perfect ending! Thanks for a great dining experience in Alaska!

Yelp
Wonderful fine dining experience. This is a great place for a birthday or anniversary. The shrimp bisque is to die for. My husband ordered the ribeye and it was perfect. I had the scallops and they were delicious. We tried the bone marrow since we had never had it before and it wasn't our favorite but it wouldn't deter us from returning. We love the extensive wine collection and delicious desserts! I would recommend making a reservation for dinner hours. On a side note, this seems like a wonderful place for an engagement party, formal work get together, or retirement dinner. Additionally, it looks like they have excellent take out specials for lunch. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Thank you so much for seating us at 8:55 when you guys close at 9pm first of all. I hate being that guy, but I couldn't fit in another time sadly. Now this dining experience was an EASY 11 out of 10. The first thing being our waiter entertaining us throughout the entire dinner & giving us some fantastic recommendations not just on the menu but all over Anchorage. He is what holds a good business together. We talked about everything from other food spots to video games, it kills me that I didn't get his name but he made the experience so much more enjoyable. Now on to the food, the bread and butter came out HOT so it was already a great start. Decided to go with the Elk Tartare because why not, this was a little different than I was expecting but in a good way. The Pork Belly was what stole the show as far as appetizers go, soooooo tender and the sauce it comes with had me in heaven. The Ribeye was EASILY one of the best I've ever had in my life. I remember cutting into it and seeing it nearly MELT like it was a hot knife through butter. It was THAT tender, I almost cried with every bite. The Alaskan King Crab with that CAJUN flavoring was perfect with the steak. Can't visit Alaska without the King Crab Leg right? HUGE piece of Crab so we were almost full, but then you know we had to see what the caviar and SEASONAL gnocchi was talking about. Every bite almost sent me into a coma . Ended the night with the Cheesecake with brownie fudge crust and the Quatro Leches both stupendous. This was easily my favorite meal in Alaska and the best dining experience I've had in a long time!!! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!!

Yelp
Altura is one of the best, if not the best, restaurants in Anchorage - do not be persuaded otherwise by its location in a strip mall in midtown rather than downtown. Every time I dine here, the waitstaff are lovely, the vibe is cozy, and the food is incredible. This visit, we had the daily soup to start, which was creamy and tasty. For an appetizer, there was a hamachi special, which had the most delightful yuzu sauce. For a main, I had the Kodiak scallops, which were cooked to perfection and perfectly paired with asparagus and risotto. I do not know if I've ever had better scallops elsewhere. I love coming to Altura and I'd recommend it to anyone in Anchorage who wants a delicious meal of seafood or otherwise!

Yelp
The food was amazing! The hostess was very friendly over the phone for our reservation. The staff here crafted a beautiful dining experience. I have food allergies and they were accommodating where they could be and made sure I was aware when the menu item contained ingredients I couldn't have. 10/10 for these guys.

Yelp
First. The bread has only a subtle tiny sign of being crusty. Soft in all the right places. A great start! And it only got better and better. I'm a big fan of mushrooms and gnocchi, but I haven't had them together. Usually, gnocchi is in a heavy and tasty cream sauce resulting in a lack of attention to the gnocchi and, what I realize now, a nod to the sauce. The gnocchi at Altura was slightly connected to a delightful mushroom crème sauce, that, while incredibly tasty, did not detract from the flavorful and firm pasta. The entrees were amazing. I wasnt sure about cold pesto orso that accompanied the scallops, but I shouldn't have feared. It was full of flavor and interesting. Paired perfect with the scallops without overpowering their flavor. Wine was tasty. Service, spectacular. I realize I probably give out five stars too freely. Altura should be six or seven stars on my current scale. Final note: It's amazing how I've never really comprehended location of a restaurant as measurable entity. If I had one complaint (and let's be clear here, I DO NOT), it would be the door to the outside doesn't have blinds (maybe they can't?) and throughout dinner there were a few cars that pulled into a space and sort of killed the ambiance for a few moments.

Yelp
Always high quality cuisine and service to match. Highly recommended! Convenient mid-town location.

Yelp
Always a five star experience. Tonight I had the short rib special with Japanese BBQ Sauce glaze and the compressed pickled cucumber salad. An incredible dish! My fiancé always chooses the filet, and our dinner companion had the rib eye. We were all proud members of the clean plate club. Not pictured, the great desserts and appetizers. Pick any one of them and you'll be happy. Top that off with an incredible wine selection and the best wait staff on the planet (Eliza and Steve--we love you guys!!!), and there's a reason that we check in at Altura more than any other place in town.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food every time. GREAT SERVICE. (Yes in caps, cause it needed emphasis) Bread was brought, water was refilled so many times, by multiple people, appetizers and dinner were served at perfect timing and dessert was glorious. Our server was knowledgeable and professional. The atmosphere was really nice. It got louder toward the end of the meal as it filled up, but it wasn't overly distracting and remained enjoyable. Best chef in anchorage! Extremely creative and consistent.

Yelp
Wonderful food, wine and service! Was able to accommodate a group of 10 for a surprise birthday. Made splitting the check easy and was very attentive even while lots of conversations were happening.

Yelp
Went again for lunch and yes again great quality and service. They are only open for takeout during lunch but that's ok. I did buy the cheese burger again. Wow i still just as good even eating it in the car in the parking lot of the movie theater. place is clean and well kept as always. Keep up the good work.

Yelp
We ate at this place twice recently and everyone really needs to go here. The menu is pretty small but very solid. We had: Black Cod (with Fennel, Mushrooms and a very nice Calabrian Chili butter), Weathervane Scallops (with chilled Orzo and mint pesto), Confit Chicken (with Brie mushroom Ravioli and Beurre Blanc), Roasted Butternut Squash Salad (with a really nice hot honey vinaigrette), Mushroom Soup (lightly creamy with intense umami flavor) and the Cambozola Appetizer (lightly breaded, fried and served with blueberry preserves, purred parsley, candied walnuts, roasted garlic and crisp toast). All of these were excellent. The big winner was the Cod and the Cambozola (you need to like this cheese but man when it's merry it's at a different level). The house bread is excellent and the Cil give butter topped with Black Sea salt is addictive. The service was professional both times. There is no liquor but a nicely curated wine list. The space is a little spare but works out. Note that the atmosphere in the upper dining room is much better than the lower level. With an appetizer, a couple of entrees and wine two of you will be spending around $150, but it's well worth it for the quality of the food. As I said, everyone should go here

Yelp
Wow! Had the French dip that I have seen people rave about -- and they weren't fibbing! By far the best French dip, even the au jus was great. Great flavor and size. Did the tater tot side, which are the best tots I've had in ages

Yelp
I've only had to go orders from here but the food has always been above and beyond. This week I tried the Altria Bistro. With the cambozola cheese and challah bun it was so decadent, the red onion and arugula helped balance it out.

Yelp
The smash burger is by far the best burger in town sooo delicious and juicy .. great job Chef Nate

Yelp
Super tasty! We were staying the night in Anchorage before leaving to visit Katmai and were happy to find this place still had a reservation. We ended up going back for another dinner when we got back to Anchorage before heading home so that should tell you how much we liked it! We got the hamachi collars appetizer both times -- wow, it was incredible. Served with tiny forks so you can get at all the meaty goodness tucked away inside the bone, and warm wet cloths to wipe our hands after! They also served sourdough with a homemade butter that was very tasty as a starter. The first visit I got a halibut special which was okay but a bit dry. My husband got the prawns which had a sort of curry tasting seasoning, they were delicious and I ordered them for my entree the second visit! The second visit my husband got the cod which he liked a lot. For dessert both times we got the earl grey creme brulee with a lace cookie. It was a great choice. Overall really enjoyed this place and will definitely seek it out if we ever return to Anchorage. Leaving this review as my thanks and hoping it helps others discover this place!

Yelp
Went a few weeks ago on a Friday evening. First off, service was great. So this has nothing to do with the service. Placed smelled like Simple Green. I can't decide if that's good (because at least they clean) or bad because it was overpowering. The food was pretty bad. I could go on about each individual plate, but basically every plate must have gone through an additional salt chef. So. Much. Salt. Couldn't even finish my scallops. Probably should've said something but I powered through what I could. Anyways, $200 worth of food for two people later, not impressed. Will likely never step foot in there again, which is a bummer since I was looking forward to it.

Yelp
I have had the pleasure of visiting Altura Bistro on two different occasions. Each time with a different member of the wait staff. The location was surprising at first, in a run down strip mall - however after getting to know Anchorage over the last 7 years I've learned that this isn't all that uncommon. A diamond in the rough so to speak. Each of the visits to Altura have been pleasant. The first time I indulged in the shrimp bisque (to die for) and the crab Mac and cheese which was pretty decent, but can't say I'd write home about it. My then fiance and I also enjoyed the cheese appetizer. Our more recent visit came about after having stopped in with the hopes of lunch, which we learned they're only available for take out at lunch. Bummer! Not surprising with the staffing difficulties everyone is having though. We opted to fulfill the craving by visiting for dinner the following week. The decor of the restaurant and the vibe as a whole feels slightly confused. This is something I've only ever noticed in Alaska, but for some reason it really bothers me. Oh well! The food was wonderful, I had been craving gnocchi and had the luxury of receiving the final serving of the gnocchi for that dinner service. It was luscious and truly very pallette pleasing. My husband and I split the mushroom soup which was amazing. We enjoyed their cheese appetizer again this visit and it remained wonderful. Honestly we probably could have forgone the entree course as we were pretty stuffed but I picked on my filet mignon and my husband's new York. Both good, not my favorite though. Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
Friends in Anchorage introduced us to Altura on our anniversary. We received a pleasant greeting and were promptly seated. The atmosphere was pleasant with decor and furnishings appropriate to the bistro billing. Our server was cheerful and engaging without being intrusive. Since it was our anniversary our friends wanted to but a bottle of champagne. It took a while to get one because each of the first three chosen were unavailable. Rather than being annoying, it actually became amusing. We did eventually find and enjoy a bottle. It friends recommended surprised which were tasty and hit the spot. For mains we had the salmon which was perfectly seasoned and cooked for dessert we shared a pear tart with gorgonzola ice cream. This was particularly good because it was not too sweet, allowing the flavors and textures to do the talking. The food and service were first rate, probably five stars. The only reason for my four star rating was a moderately strong odor of cleaning products that hit me as we entered. It detracted from the first impression. Other than that quibble a fine experience and worth a visit.

Yelp
We had a fantastic dinner at Altura. To start with the pork belly was excellent. The pork had a great flavor and the glaze was delicious. The cabbage and vinegar was a great accompaniment. Complimentary bread was ciabatta with chive butter and black salt. The bread and salt were both excellent. The prawn bisque was my favorite dish. The soup was slightly spicy and very rich. The Gorgonzola gnocchi was my second favorite. The cheese had a great flavor and the gnocchi were soft and pillowy. The chicken confit with ravioli was also delicious. The chicken could have been cooked longer as it was pink around the bone. The skin was well done and crispy. The ravioli had a nice mushroom taste and another flavor I couldn't place. The dish could have benefitted from a vegetable on the plate. The only misfire was dessert. The caramel pecan cake was just ok. The ice cream had ice flakes so possibly overchurned. I found the dessert overly sweet but that is a matter of taste.

Yelp
I'll give high praise for their to go sandwich menu. But... my in-house dining experience was not so good. For a high-end restaurant, the food fell flat. Two friends order the same crab mac-n-cheese. One dish had literally 3 pieces of crab while the other had the proper amount. Two other friends ordered the scallop dish - both encrusted in a salt lick and the scallops were really small. Two others ordered the cod dish - one was fine the other cooked with a thick layer of salt?! We would have brought this to our waiters attention, but he never checked in with us until it was too late in the evening to have anything fixed; we just wanted to leave. And it was surprisingly hard to get the attention of another staff member given the restaurant was not that full - they seemed preoccupied with a patron at the bar. Needless to say, it was a disappointment- hoping it was just an "off" night. ‍

Yelp
Overall: 4.6/5 (dine in) We had a reservation at 7:30 PM so were seated within a few minutes. Our server, Logan, explained the specials of the day as soon as we were seated and handed the menu since these aren't on the menu itself. He also made great red & wine recommendations for our dinner - Louis Jadot Pouilly Fuisse ($14) & Shea, Pinot Noir ($13). Note that there's a 5% alcohol tax. Pork Belly ($17): This tasted like Vietnamese braised pork belly with a bit of a twist. The sauce & the texture was very interesting and different that it was a bit mind boggling. It's really good with the green sauce as well. My husband said this is one of the best pork belly he's had and he's eaten a lot. Sweet Prawn Bisque ($12): This was really good but it was a bit too salty & heavy for me. I felt like I needed to eat it with bread or have it diluted. Duck Pate ($28): Wow, this was super unique and delicious with the thin bread it came with. The red onion marmalade with mustard seed was divine and went well with the duck pate and bread. It was so good, my husband was eating it by the spoonful. We did get pretty full from it but it was worth it. Seared Foie Gras ($24): I didn't enjoy the taste of texture of this foie gras. It was too much for me so I could only eat a little piece with bread. Definitely something you can skip, especially if you have the duck pate. Alaskan Black Cod ($42): This had great reviews on Yelp but it tasted terrible to us. The cod was too fishy that we couldn't even finish it. The dumplings were actually better than the cod sadly. Super disappointed after being so excited to try Alaskan seafood.

Yelp
This was all three of our first times to Altura. The service at Altura was good...commiserate with typical "Alaskan fine dining" experiences, including friendly staff. The ambience was satisfactory, though it didn't feel very cozy. Most of the food was tasty and presented well. Unfortunately, two out of three of us ordered the Wagyu Ribeye Steaks. These steaks were quite literally the saltiest pieces of meat that both of us had ever eaten. We joked and called it "Corned Wagyu Ribeyes" and "Wagyu Ribeye Jerky". Though these steaks were far saltier than corned beef or jerky. Our third friend ordered the crab mac & cheese, and he had positive things to say about it. He tried our ribeyes and also commented on how salty they were. We couldn't taste much of anything aside from salt. I believe this dish alone was approximately $130...$120 of this cost must've been salt! LoL I believe both of us were embarrassed to say anything, and neither of us wanted to "complain". My friend ate less than half of his. I choked down mine over a 1.5-2-hour period as a point of silly pride. Looking back, we should've said something to our server. I would say that everything else was great. But the insanely salty $130 steaks really soured (or salted) our experience. Today I decided to call them just to let them know...hopefully to save them and other customers from a similar experience. The host was receptive and appreciative. She offered that the manager would call me back soon. Based on how that goes, I may revise my review. Officially renamed to Saltura Bistro.

Yelp
Ask for dining room when you make reservations, but even then you may end up in the banquet room. Fabulous food, good service , but ambiance of yes, a banquet room. Like sitting at the kids table but more rickety. (Thankfully a server walk by and noticed and fixed the table.) If we were with kids or a big group it would have been ok. But not for a special night out. Sad; I sing the praises of this place all the time. Maybe not now.

Yelp
Want a great Burger for lunch? Want a great Fresh Fish Halibut sandwich for lunch? Then you've come to the right place. We got the Altura Burger MR with caramelized red onions, arugula, and melty Cambazola cheese. We all love this one for lunch. Then, I for the first time got their perfectly cooked Fresh Catch Sandwich that was light baked, Panko encrusted Halibut. Both fantastic and with BBQ homemade potato chips as the sides. There are a lot of hotels in the area within walking distance, just a few blocks down Old Seward Highway. What are you waiting for Order something now ToGo or dine in! Beers on Tap! Today it was a shopping pitstop. We were out had to run errands and it was Father's Day. Ordered ToGo and picked up and ran about!

Yelp
Serving the best food in Anchorage right now. Incredible ribeye. The appetizers were all impressive as well.

Yelp
Came here on our last night in Anchorage for final farewell dinner. Fantastic food and great service. The prawn bisque was awesome. My son had the Wagyu ribeye. So tender and delicious. My scallops were a bit salty. No cocktails - only beer and wine so didn't have any drinks. Bone marrow was delicious. Highly recommend if you're looking for a nice restaurant with great food.

Yelp
Ooh la la!! Talk about a sandwich that can feed 2 people it's called The Mother Clucker .. lol. This sandwich was huge!! I ate it for 3 meals, for real!! Two lunches & chicken on my salad the next day! Be prepared for some spice it's not for the faint, which I loved. At work we wanted something different then the usual takeout & I suggested Altria Bistro to the guys I work with, who don't venture out for the finer things in life. After they finished their meal they asked me Why haven't I told them about this place before... once again I have to help my grown co-workers which I don't mind. Needless to say we will be having their burgers in the near future. I also recommended to my co-workers they need to try dinner here & they won't be disappointed.

Yelp
The food was excellent. The service was prompt and fast. I really think for the price of meals, the ambiance could use improving. We were seated by other people, divided by a table length. That style seating reminded me of breakfast chains in town. We goto other places to eat and pay about the same and have more of a private table it seems.

Yelp
Had the Sunday soup and bread takeout. Very nice idea. Soup was good - although a little plain. (It was vegetable soup to accommodate the vegetarian with us). Looking forward to trying some other flavors.

Yelp
Feel like I need to update my review since I have dined with them so many times since my first trip in 2019! After my first dining experience with Altura Bistro in 2019 they quickly became my #1 restaurant in the Anchorage area, and on my list of top five restaurants for southcentral AK. The upscale dining experience they offer is worth every penny, and in my opinion their prices are very fair considering the product that they put out. Their rotating menus are well thought out, and beautifully executed. The staff is always very friendly, and professional. They know their menu well, and are able to offer great suggestions. As a fine dining restaurant during the initial COVID related shut downs, Altura was able to revamp their menu for a more take out friendly experience. They decided to begin opening their doors for to go lunch hours, and started to offer different varieties of gourmet burgers, and sandwiches. The items on their to go menu always have clever/funny names. Their to go menu is available from 11am-5pm, and also after 5pm depending on how busy the kitchen is with dine in dinner service. I've tried a lot of their different sandwich variations from their to go menu, and each one is delicious. My favorites from them have been the cold cut special, soft shell crab special, second breakfast burger, tri tip sandwich, and hot damn to name a few. If you are looking for delicious Alaskan seafood, a fancy steak dinner, or a gourmet burger this is the place. Also if you ever see they are offering a special pre-fixe menu do yourself a favor, and try to get a reservation. The pre-fixe menu with a wine pairing is always a beautiful and delicious experience. I have never had a bad meal from this restaurant, and I recommend Altura to everyone!

Yelp
I stopped in based on a recommendation from a local. Gina was my server and she was amazing!!! She gave me 1st class personalized care all evening. She called me by my first name and made excellent recommendations. The food is good quality and the presentation is superb! Highly recommend this restaurant if you are visiting anchorage, Ak. It's a true fine dining experience with excellent food and service at fair prices!

Yelp
It's definitely a hidden treasure when you stumble upon it. Please make reservations, worth it..seriously! It's cute, quaint, elegant, delish and a worth while experience. The staff is super friendly and extremely helpful! The place is nice..very romantic and dreamy..I love it! Great couples date night! It's a complete different experience than the normal frontier rustic elegance you would see and expect at other restaurants. Especially the whole downtown restaurant vibes. Food is out of this world good. Check it out! I can't be a spoiler of it, just highly recommend that you see for yourself and relish in it..chyeah that good. Overall, I will be back. I look forward to it.

Yelp
I had been here once before - though not as a dine-in experience. I was given a Gift Card and so decided to make a reservation for this occasion. The food I'd had from here previously was amazing, so i was looking forward to this dinner. The space is beautiful, clean, roomy, airy, and nicely decorated, with minimal pictures on the walls. We had a corner booth, which was nice. We ordered the Cambozola and Roasted Garlic appetizer, which along with the complimentary bread, was a great start. Absolutely gorgeous Cambozola, breaded and deep fried - this was the star of the entire meal for me. It was a really tasty cheese, and i was spreading the roasted garlic cloves on the toasted ciabatta, along with some of the breaded Cambozola, and it was so full of flavour. Roasted garlic is such a simple thing, yet highly underrated. Also on the plate was a blackberry preserve, and a parsley purée, and the preserve coupled with cambozola is good. I would absolutely order this again. Then we both ordered the King Crab Mac N Cheese, but i instructed husband to order something else, in case i don't like the King Crab Mac n Cheese, then i won't be able to swap with whatever you order, so he relented and ordered the Filet Mignon (which was what i had previously had from here) which comes with garlic mashed potatoes, and asparagus. I was excited about the King Crab Mac n Cheese, but, to be honest, i felt a little underwhelmed with it. Presentation is beautiful, with a crumbed topping, but it was not very cheesy, despite there being 3 kinds of cheese. I noticed lots of herbs and white pepper, and i didn't find too much crab. I would not get this again. Husband's steak was not as good as the one I'd had last time. It was, to be honest, a little stringy, not at all like the buttery steak i had previously raved about. He took my word for it, ordered it, and ate it, and he gave it 4/5 stars. We ordered creme brulee for the dessert. It was nice. It was creamy. But i wouldn't order it again. I make a pretty good creme brulee myself, but if I'm going to pay for one, i want it to be amazing, delicious, better than nice. And in here, at this price, I'd like it to be outstanding. The service was above average, attentive, and the server was very nice, hence why I'm giving 4/5, because frankly, the appetizer was by far my favourite thing at this meal. I'm rating the whole experience and not just the food.

Yelp
The short version: Sensory Overload! The long version: A friend recommended, no, demanded me to go here and report back to her of the experience. I knew right off this was going to be awesome as it is in the same space as the legendary Aladdin's, so wonderful to see the space known for excellent food to continue. The interior decor was super fun, I really like how the tables are spread apart so the conversation doesn't have to be so loud, the wait staff were super awesome and very attentive and made the experience fun. Every dish my daughter and I had was amazing. I've never had Hamachi Collars, now I'll look for them whenever I can. The mushroom soup was so creamy and smooth and the slices of crouton bread added an extra wow feature. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the black cod was so flakey and moist, I couldn't let the broth go to waste so I was brought warm sourdough bread to soak up all the goodness. Anchorage has so many places to choose from, Altura is new and refreshing, it'll be my go-to for when I have a need for a sensory overload from awesome food!

Yelp
Me and my bf went here for the first time for his bday and we had a really good dining experience. My bf heard really good things about the food and man, he heard no rumors! We had an appetizer (Pork belly) and as a Filipino, it passed with flying colors. The pork was tender and very flavorful. I can tell that ut was marinated with the right herbs to match with the sauce it came with. Next we both had the soups on the menu and they were fantastic. Presentation is elegant. The serving size is enought to fill your hunger and the taste is superb. For the main course, my bf had the Filet Mignon with Foei Gras and I had the King Crab Mac and Cheese. The filet mugnon is tender and the right temperature. The sauce it came with is seasoned well togetehr with the meat. Not too salty which i find what other steaks fail at. My mac and cheese has subtle taste of cheese that made the crab taste pop. The cheese was also melted in the oven. The dessert we had is like a request for his bday but man, that is the best tasting raspberry i ever had lol. The cake somehow tasted more like a brownie. It doesn't have much sweet in it but that is covered but tha mallow-like topping it came with. Overall, you have to have everything in one scoop to enjoy the fullness of the dessert. The server (forgot the name sorry) was also attentive enough, didn't hover at us too frequent nor we are ignored. I appreciate that. Our first time is amazing. We'll sure be back. One thing I would suggest is to have a cocktail menu for the ladies.

Yelp
We have heard of this place and have been wanting to try for awhile. We came once but didn't have reservations- I think reservations are a must. We made them the night before for two. We came a few minutes early and were seated right away. They only have beer and wine but they didn't not try and sell us hard on drinks or apps. I was a little dissappointed they didn't do hard drinks but I was told that's what "really fancy" places do. I'm from Alaska I didn't know about "really fancy" places. I don't drink wine so we didn't order any drinks. Water stays on the table. The tables have table cloths and they take silverware away once you order if you don't need them. Star attraction is the warm wonderfully soft bread they bring you, with basil butter. Delicious. I ordered the king crab mac and cheese. I think it was like 38$ or something. There was TONS of crab in it. There were also pieces of shell so that was gross after awhile. The dish was super hot I had to wait to eat it but still burnt my tongue. Not super cheesy. Husband ordered the NY aged steak, it was a large cut, cooked perfectly nice and juicy. One piece of roasted cauliflower and a little potato. His steak was $50 something. We want to come and get one of their burgers, they only do burgers for take out. They are too fancy to serve burgers for dinner. If I came for dinner again I would get a steak. They have wagu steak from australia that they dont ship by air because it changes the way it tastes. $105. The server guy was nice and knew everything about the food.

Yelp
After a day of running around and sitting in a van, it was so nice to relax and have a quiet, 'civilized' meal. Altura is located in an un-assuming (note: plain) strip mall in Anchorage. It was about 2-ish miles from the Embassy Suites, so we grabbed a Lyft/Uber over. Easy enough. Don't judge a book by it's cover.... the entrance and the strip mall don't look like much. In fact, I questioned if we were at the right place. We were. Opened the door, peaked in... and TaDa! You're in an upscale (not overly fancy nor pretentious) bistro setting. It's intimate, but not dark like they are trying too hard to create that "date night" feeling. We were greeted immediately, and since our table was not yet ready, we grabbed a seat at the bar for a glass of wine. Not 10 minutes later, our table was ready. Our server was lovely and he took the time to describe the dishes we were interested in as well as the specials. We splurged and ordered the duck pate appetizer to start which was one of the specials of the evening. I'm so glad we did. It was decadent and sinful.... and now, almost a month later, I'm salivating just remembering that appetizer. (*sigh*) For our mains... we ordered the Black Cod and the Halibut dishes. Both were prepared and presented beautifully. My only gripe ....and it may just be our thing... is that both fish dishes were a tad on the salty side. We do have a tendency to be sensitive to salt so maybe that's just on us. I'd totally still order both again knowing this tho.

Yelp
Altura Bistró might be the best fine dining place in Anchorage . Chef Nathan Bently received the James Beard semi finalist award for best Chef : Northwest and Pacific.2022. That's an unparalleled honor .All you have to do is experience one meal at Altrua and you will understand why Chef Bently won this award . He makes sure that everyone knows his winning was the result the great Altura Bistro team. Altrua is on Facebook and it pays to follow them . They let you know of upcoming events and special items on the menu. They also serve delicious sandwiches ( halibut and tri-tip and of course burgers )for lunch. The very yummy sandwiches are for take out only .

Yelp
Love the food and service every time. One of these days I'll be in town for a lunch special sandwich/burger. Will always recommend visiting when in Anchorage.

Yelp
Probably the meal that we enjoyed the most in Alaska. Vibe is classy and service was good. I enjoyed the raw oysters and the bisque. Th Salmon and crab Mac and cheese were decent but I wish the dishes weren't so salty. I just couldn't eat the rice since everything was heavily salted. The London fog creme brûlée was ok but a little too sweet and not creamy enough. Overall relatively better meal compared to all the food we had in Alaska:

Yelp
Altura is always amazingly delicious! I've never tried anything I didn't like there. The service is always great and professional at the same time. It's a nice, comfortable atmosphere that's inviting & not at all pretentious. It always feels nice & clean too which I think most people appreciate when dining out. The owner is involved with a lot of charitable events in town too and I love to support local people doing great things! I really love any fresh fish specials they offer and the miso brussel sprouts are so yummy! I love their complimentary bread with the addictively delicious artichoke butter! I regret getting too full to try the desserts because that clafoutis intrigues me - maybe next visit!

Yelp
We made reservations for my daughter's birthday since it's a restaurant she's been wanting to try. We made them for 7:00pm for 8 people. This is important remember this. I walked in 10 minutes before the reservation and was told it will be a few minutes. By 7:15 we still have not been seated. I went to the restroom and when i returned I asked again, which in reply she said let me ask your server. 5 minutes later she said we can seat you now. So 20 minutes after our reservation we got seated. We're they busy maybe but not enough that we waited that long, which makes it 30 minutes for me. Everyone else that walked in was seated right away. Once seated they came over with water but no one said a word to us. We sat for a while before she came over and asked if we wanted drinks. They orders wine and beer since they can't serve any hard liquor but not once was I asked if I wanted anything to drink besides the water they put on the table. Two of our guest arrived closer to 8 which was fine some we still have not gotten service. No i take that back we did get the pork belly that was ordered with the drinks. I asked for bread and i was told oh yea it will be out shortly. This was BEFORE our last two guest arrived. They arrived and sat down and the waitress came right over to HER and asked what they would like to drink. Again never asked if I wanted anything to drink EVER! At that moment I asked her again for bread she said of course and as she turned to walk away she said it will be out shortly. I said umm no excuse me can we have bread now, I said i can't eat much but I would like some bread please. She said okay and walked away. In my head I'm like we have been sitting here now over an hour and all we got was water, a couple of drinks and a serving or pork belly. I told the couple that came in last that since they arrived that was the most attention we have received since we arrived. (Key note the couple that came in last was a black man and a Hispanic woman who can pass for a white woman.) We we're the only black people in the restaurant that night that we could see. After that everyone at the table really started noticing what was going on. The waitress paid more attention to her other tables then she did ours all night. Time to put our order in and she started at my end of the table and ask the last couple what they wanted first and then she went to the other end of the table and took my order LAST. My food was the last to be placed on the table and still I wasn't asked if I wanted a drink. We ate our food and I will say it was very delicious. My first time trying oyster mushrooms and I fell in love so much I asked for a side order to take home to eat with my left overs. I got the New York Strip, my daughter got the Waygu steak and my son in-law got the Mac and cheese. I believe it had King Crab in it. We all loved the food. It was the service we received the entire time we were there. The bills came out and for the three of us our bill was almost $400.00. That included a 18% gratuity, and a $25 charge for 1 person not showing up. I want to see where it was printed there is a charge if people don't show. I paid our bill in CASH and when she bought me my change it should have been $16.54. She bought me $16.50. So not only did we get seated way after our reservation, get ignored once seated, charged $25 for a person not showing up, but she or the restaurant decided it was okay to keep $.04 from my change. Never in my life have I ever been treated like i was not worth their time. I felt like we weren't wanted there like we couldn't afford to be there. It's the principle of things that when you see it happening to others in said restaurant, you expect the same service. We received none of that. I felt like i was being mocked every time she presented me with something like you know how they say in the south "Bless your heart!" That's what I got. By the end of the night we all left and agreed we will never ever return to this restaurant and if I'm spend my money on a good meal I deserve to be treated like the other Customers of that establishment. Oh and she ran out after we had been standing there talking saying she needed my signature on a cash slip. I gave it to her and she looked at it like i was adding another tip. Nope you kept my $.04 that's your tip. Take your money else where if your looking for a good meal. I promise the food will be just as good.

Yelp
The food here is meant to be savored. It's more on the upscale and higher priced side so I think of it as a special occasion or date night place. That being said, the staff was greeting people by name, suggesting they have a number of regulars. I had the black cod, which comes with a cream sauce. What caught me off guard is how light the sauce was. So often with white fish it seems like restaurants try to bury it under heavy cream and cheese to conceal the flavor. Not here, it was perfectly cooked and tasted great. The staff was polite and attentive, but a nice light touch. I'll be going back for sure.

Yelp
There's something to be said about good quality paper towels. I know thats seems odd and out of place in a food review but stay with me I hope it makes sense... I spent two hours at the bar one evening and I didnt have a single alcoholic beverage. I was seriously craving bone morrow one day and fired up yelp, i came across this listing and figured why not. After trying unsuccessfully to persuade my firends, family, random strangers to go to dinner with me I decided to strike out on my own and try it myself.... as much as I wanted company im glad I went alone. A place setting for one is easier to accommodate than a party of 2 or more... so I didn't make reservations, dont judge... but as i was saying lonesome ole me was able to get in without a reservation but at the bar, totally fine by me. At the bar I was helped by a gentleman first and i failed to catch his name. Friendly Knowledgeable fella and he recommended a grapefruit soda in response to my request for a mocktail.( beer and wine bar, not stocked for cocktails) And honestly it worked well, my intial taste left me unimpressed but as I sat and sipped i found it refreshing and the bitterness was nice in a sip it slow kind of way. For my starter i went with the bone marrow. It lived up to my craving. The initial spoonful was buttery well seasoned and satisfying. The radish had a nice peppery flavor that along with the toasted bread was a nice crunch that broke up the soft texture of the marrow. I wish i was eating it at home so i could gnaw on that bone and extract every last ounce of flavor out of that starter. Sadly, or thankfully depending on how you look at it, the male barttipender whisked away the plate before i made a fool of myself. Great starter, it set the stage for the rest of the meal. For the main I think i had the New York strip steak or the Filet my memory is failing me right now. It was cooked perfectly meat was tender and cut easily. It was moist with a perfect hue of pink. The potatoes were nice but I enjoyed the oyster mushrooms the most, while the beef should have been center stage i felt the mushrooms here caught my taste buds more than the beef. That may be in part that im a serious carnivore so beef is always a part of my meals so it could be due to flavor fatigue with beef. For dessert i went with the earl grey creme brule and man am i glad I did. I feel the tea flavor was subtle but it took the dessert to a nuanced place where it sort of lingered softly on the tounge, like an after taste but more. I cant explain it. Its like the muted brilliance of the flavor stays with and you mentally taste it throughout the week if you let it get stuck in your head. The same way that the thought of a perfume can bring back that scent and emotions. The tea flavor brings me back to this dessert. The cookie was a crumbly crispy treat. It wasn't too sweet and complimented the creme Brule perfectly. It was amazing to me that it manged to be crumbly and delicate yet still hold it cookie shape. Amazing finish to an amazing meal. Now back to the paper towels. The bathroom the setup was nice clean and efficient. Nothing outrageous here but the quality of the paper towels caught my attention. I felt that paying attention to something as small as that added to my experience. It was the care that went into something often overlooked that stayed with me,for me is the essence of why this place is special. Its indulgence without being ostentatious. As Eliza, the female bartender put it in response to me commenting that i just decided to dine alone if no wanted to eat with me "you're just living your best life." And damn it was I! Amazing food in an unpretentious environment. Perfect for a nice date, anniversary, birthday or a day where you want to sit and allow the world to grind on while you pause to sip ginger soda and remind yourself you deserve to indulge once in awhile. So live your best life, eat here.

Yelp
I love a brilliant restaurant in an unassuming strip mall. This is fine dining at it's best. The ambience is nice. I love the use of real candles on the tables. The decor is understated but a bit glam. They did a great job transforming this space. The food was out of this world. It says a lot when there is no salt and pepper on the tables. That speaks of the chef's confidence in knowing that the food would be perfectly seasoned. I was in a party of four. We started off with oysters to share all around. I loved the use of cucumber caviar and red grapefruit. The flavor was subtle but delicious. I had the Filet mignon. The veal glacee hand poured over the steak was yummy. The potatoes were special to me. Creamy and flavorful, they were the best mashed I've had at any restaurant. EVER. I ended with the Prosecco cheesecake. When you get to the Pop Rocks it adds such an interesting mouth feel bathed in the richness of the cheesecake. It was creative and really worked. I thoroughly enjoyed myself there and am certain we will be back. Service was attentive and they have an extensive adult beverage selection. I'm so honored that we have beautiful restaurants like Altura Bistro in Alaska. I would proudly bring any visitors from out of state here and know they will be impressed too!

Yelp
I have no words but clearly I do.....BRAVO!!! I was on a mommy and me dinner date with my mommy and wanted to treat us with an amazing meal. Altura did not disappoint! You could really taste the love in each bite. You could feel the love in the amazing customer service. I forgot I was at a restaurant because in a space full of strangers, it felt like I was eating with friends. My mom has severe allergies to everything but air as of yet and she was able to enjoy a full 3 course meal with slight modifications. There were no issues with the requests and our server was beyond informative with breaking down each ingredient to make sure my mom would enjoy her meal. Now the $50 burger. DOIT! Listen. I took one bite of that masterpiece of a burger and as the wagyu, foie gras, etc melted in my mouth, it was at that moment that I felt like SpongeBob and his Krabby Patty. I felt that with all that has been going on in this world, I deserved this awesomeness. Look, Altura Bistro showed up and out with this one‼ This meal was a great way to end my weekend

Yelp
Excellent upscale place in a funky location. The flavors and preparations were too notch! Starting with the Oysters with Yuzu vinaigrette was great!! Also loved the baked cheese dish. The seared Scallops and the halibut were both well prepared but didn't have as much flavor bombs as the starters. Loved the warm clafoutis a la mode for dessert...perfect egginess in the custard! Great reasonably priced wine list too.
