Tucson’s Best Restaurants and Bars: Where to Eat in the Old Pueblo | Eater Phoenix

"Savor the Neapolitan-style pizza with a side of vegetables kissed with char from the wood-fired oven at Anello. Pizzeria Bianco alumnus Scott Girod showcases seasonal, local ingredients beautifully in a minimalist fashion, matching the minimalist interior. The building doesn’t have any sign or window decal, but keep an eye out for the red bar of light above the window." - Jackie Tran

A minimalist room, natural wines, and expertly blistered sourdough pizzas define ANELLO. Beloved by local diners and critics, it’s a focused, quietly ambitious spot where Tucson produce and wood fire do the talking.

For a different spin, Anello is a wood-fired pizzeria that offers halal lamb sausage as a topping option, reflecting Tucson’s creative culinary spirit. While not a strictly halal establishment, their willingness to source and serve certified halal ingredients has been highlighted by local food critics, including Tucson Foodie. The rustic, minimalist setting and rotating seasonal menu make Anello a favorite for adventurous diners seeking something outside the norm.

Amazing Pizza, so far the best I tasted in town! Very creative toppings at a good price. Really enjoyed the starters as well. Only the flatbread starter could have had a bit more savory flavors. The restaurant is designed very minimalist, quite unique for Tucson. Though it can get a bit loud inside.

Google
This restaurant came recommended by a fellow pizza connoisseur and it was nothing short of a fine dining experience. The location is fairly unmarked outside and once you step inside it feels like a little slice of modern minimalist Europe right in Tucson. We ordered one of everything from from “Bites” menu, 3 pizzas and the blue corn lemon tart. All the dough here is sour dough and baked in a wood burning oven, which gives it a unique soft, chewy, pillowy yet crunchy texture. Flat bread had this sweet chili sauce poured on it which was the most amazing pairing. All the food was presented with great detail and remarkable. Lemon tart was worth finishing with as well.

Google
ANELLO was great. The space is very small but cozy. There’s no true sign so look for the red light. You should make a reservation however they have a good deal with Crooked Teeth(a bar next door) where you can get it delivered to eat there. The pizza was wonderful if lacking a little undercarriage. The parsley purée on the Verde was awesome. Sourdough pizza is always nice.

Google
Favorite pizza in the city! Love the bianco pie with the sausage or pepperoni on top. I love this spot, quick service with a quaint space that is intimate, delicious, and has a great aesthetic. The food is great, the servers are humble, the chefs are outstanding at what they do. I never was a huge pizza man, but whenever pizza comes to mind, Anello is top of mind for recommendation! Just brought some friends from Mexico and they were blown away. Love this spot

Google
Small little spot, make reservations about a day in advance if you don’t want to wait. Pizza was fantastic, perfect amount of char, toppings were all delicious. Will be back next time I’m in town!

Google
Thank you to the staff of Anello incredible service. Chef brought everything out demonstrated it. Everything was phenomenal. The only thing I regret is not taking my carrot dish to go totally spaced it. Keep up the great work!

Jeffrey Richards

Google
As always, solid entry’s by the Anello team! If you’re planning on heading here, give them 24 hrs or so for reservations or grab a pizza or two at the alley window and head over to the brewery across the ally for some beers! Come early, they sold out of pizza dough(s) on Saturday night by 7pm….

Google
Great food with nice texture. The taste of the pizza on real wood fire was great. The deserts were not too sweet and right amount of competing textures to them.

Yelp
Absolutely the best pizza in the world...the Verde pizza by Anello. I love pizza. Traveling the world and have pizza. This is my most favorite pizza the Verde.
google avatar

Dino D.

Yelp
This is not really a pizzeria. Not really upscale either. Very small space. Ended up ordering to go and walking over to Tap and Bottle to eat it. 4/5 for the pizza. Crust too floppy. Very small, like a personal pizza. Very limited menu. No cocktails no bar seating.

Yelp
I recently moved to the tucson area and explored a couple of local pizza restaurants only to find them being well below my standard. I found Anello on yelp and was pleasantly surprised. I loved that it was quaint and personable. The focaccia was full of flavor with the perfect dough baked to perfection. It was very light, crisp and didn't give me the heavy weight sensation. The pizza was of course made from the same dough and again, baked to perfection. The menu was perfect. Simple and not overwhelming. We ordered the margarita and verde pizza. Both did not disappoint. My compliments to the chef who apparently took the time to create the beautiful food. The customer service was excellent. We will definitely return.
google avatar

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by how good their pizza was! I've been pretty disappointed with Tucson's food scene overall, so my expectations were low despite the great reviews. But the pizza was genuinely delicious--I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
IMO the best pizza in Tucson. Always on point with fresh, quality and flavor . The dough is inline with what you get in Europe. If you are looking for a NY, Chicago or Detroit pizza this may not be for you . Along with their fabulous pizza the limited but special sides are amazing. Parking is a bit of a pain but well worth the struggle.

Yelp
love it!!! My mom and brother tried Anello for the first time. We can all agree that the focaccia is the best. The desert was really great too. The spicy green beans were delicious. My favorite pizza is the verde it is very unique! They are very friendly too, great place to go while downtown Tucson.

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere and service. Delicious food with high quality ingredients. Amazing pizza dough- crust. Highly recommend the white or green pizza. God selection of wine.

Yelp
Delicious pizza!! Every bite is full of flavor, all of these were spectacular! We ordered these to go, they were ready in 30 min and at the promised time. The staff is very friendly and its great spot on 6th. The ingredients are all very fresh and the dough was

Yelp
Today, Anellos is only getting four out of five stars. Pizzas still taste amazing, still weird that they ask for a tip when you are picking up, but above all, my pizza was a little burnt!. I'm one of those people that enjoy my crust! Let me enjoy my crust! Couldn't do it because it was charred! If you are forking out $20 for a 12", please be a little more careful and not burn my crust to the point of no recognition! Other than that, lovely lovely pizza! Thank you!

Yelp
Incredibly good artesenal traditional Neopolitanish style pizzas cooked quickly in a hot oven. Service is quick, professional & polite. Ingredients are top notch & attention to details is s as Keats on point. You won't get a soggy undercooked pie here, but you will get some char on the crust & one of Tucson's most authentic pizza's.

Yelp
After reading the reviews, we were anticipating a fabulous pizza. We ordered the Marguerita pizza. It had a thin but crispy crust that took up a large portion of the slice. The sauce was so runny it dripped onto my hand. Seems to be the consistency of slightly purreed diced tomatoes. The basil was wilted and the cheese was like slabs on the slice. They make their own soda and only have 3 local beers. The two points are for the service, which was quick and friendly. Our homemade pizza is way better.
google avatar

Daphne A.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning restaurant with even better food. We enjoyed every part of our meal. A real strength of this place is the limited menu; a few items mean clarity and keeps the quality high. Everything was executed so well. I can't pick a favorite part of our three courses!
google avatar

Yelp
Poor customer service. Had reservations but they couldnt find them even though I showed them the text message. They said we dont do text. Uh, here is the text conformation. Confused looks. We only do email. OK, here is that. OK but your 20 minutes early. Tables available. Ill ask the owner. OK, Got seated. Ordered the "olives" no description. All green olives served warm. They were good but needed a description on menu. Margarita pizza was good but no tomatoes just sauce. Wine price and pour were average. The hostess was growly and not helpful. Tommy was attentive and helpful.

Kenzie G.

Yelp
I returned with a friend!! Once again delicious pizza, focaccia, and desert plates. The restaurant is very small and intimate, which obviously has pros and cons, cons being if you don't make reservations, which are via e-mail only which is a bit obnoxious, you could end up waiting over an hour. You can take the food to go and eat at either bar nearby, which helps solve the dilemma, but I personally prefer to sit down inside and enjoy. I have been twice now and have had the Margherita pizza and the Bianca, both of which were fantastic. I would love to see the menu expanded a bit, they have a very small selection of pizzas, I feel like they have the creativity to make some really unique and fun pizza and focaccias which would make returning more worth it.

Yelp
Incredible pizza and very unique appetizers! We went for lunch and didn't wait at all. The restaurant itself is very pretty and service was great. Would definitely make the journey from Phoenix again!

Yelp
amazing place, definitely conflicted between anello and falora. not as many options here but the service and ambiance is astounding. what is the best is the minimalist architecture and artwork. love everything about anello, especially its location and its hints to local businesses here in tucson

Kathleen V.

Yelp
Delicious pizza in Tucson. Love the vibe of this place. Casual seating, super friendly and efficient wait staff ( one super-efficient gal). Happy diners on New Years Eve afternoon. Why? Clear simple men. Excellent fresh and cheesy thin crust artesanal pizzas. Quick too- 10 min for take out

Yelp
Anello is in the Sonoran Restaurant Week rooster and we decided to give it a try. Their menu was very small compared to other restaurants and it's $35. We ordered the Seasonal salad (very interesting flavors that marinated very well together), the Pizza (had fontina, red onions, lemon chutney, fresh chilis, prickly pear creme) was not my favorite but their dough is really tasty. For dessert they had the Monsoon White Chocolate (with a lot of smokey flavors, not my favorite to be honest). I think they could improve their menu for Restaurant week because their regular pizzas are wonderful. The service was great considering how busy they were and remember to always make reservations because this beautiful place is very small and always busy.

Yelp
Anello's cozy, with pizzas so fresh, The Verde's parsley puree is simply the best. Seasonal menu, a Seattle-like place, Tucson's new gem in a snug little space!
google avatar

Kyna H.

Yelp
Intimate settings and artisan pizzas are my favorite and combined just makes a dynamic duo. I've heard this aesthetic restaurant gets packed quick and was delighted to find we were the only customers upon arrival shortly after they opened on a Thursday. The menu is simple and short, but has everything you could want for an artisan pizzeria. We got the Bianca and Verde pizza and both were amazing. Love the crunch provided by the pistachios in the Verde pizza. Given how busy this tiny place can get, there is a convenient order/pickup window to the side of the building. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
Alert: there is something better than Anellos pizza...it's their Focaccia is incredible! It has so much ricotta on it has some pepper or something in on it that makes it sweet, savory, everything. I high recommend ordering one to share with some pizza! One of those dishes you will be thinking about and craving again! Always recommend ordering it up as pickup and taking it over to Crooked Tooth brewing to enjoy with a drink!
google avatar

Yelp
We absolutely love this restaurant. The focaccia bread is the best in the city, possibly the best that we have ever had. Their pizzas are authentic, woodfired pizzas with legit ingredients. Every time we have gone, we have tasted their seasonal veggies, and every time we nearly lick our plate clean. This time we tried two of their desserts, both were completely gone within minutes. I don't think there is a bad thing on this menu. The venue is small and quaint. There is no signage outside of the door, so you have to know where it is in order to find the restaurant. It makes it even more special to be seated in there. Service is always fast and always comes with a smile.
google avatar

Nina B.

Yelp
The best pizzas I've ever had! I recommend making a reservation as the restaurant is very small. You have to email to make reservations! My friend and I split the seasonal veggies, two pizzas, and the chocolate tart. The veggies were soooo good! I love the vinegar and sour taste of it. The pizzas were also delicious! We added sausage to the Verde pizza and pepperoni to the Margherita pizza. I am never going back to any other pizza! The chocolate tart is also heavenly. It was so rich and creamy. I've had a dream about it, that's how delicious it is! It is on the pricer side. The pizza is a size of a personal pizza and it's about $16. For the quality you're getting, it's worth it!
google avatar

Em R.

Yelp
The menu is constantly changing so I recommend going with a fellow foodie... you'll want to order as much as you can! This family owned establishment is one of a kind and a MUST if you are in the area! All of the ingredients are fresh, and the flavor profiles are always rich and intricate. The hours and seating is very limited so I would plan on getting there as early as possible or emailing them for a reservation. Hello@anello.space
google avatar

Neyda V.

Yelp
We gave it a second shot, not worth the hype. The pizza is good, but their seating is limited and the reservations are a joke, I've sent an email a few times and never got a response. I've been to a few businesses like this, which only bother to sell as much as they choose and don't really consider their customers. I'll pass and opt for a more consistent and customer focused location. I felt uncomfortable as I was waiting to eat and observed several patrons approach the front booth just to be sent away ( all stating they tried to contact the restaurant with no avail) the snarky host even mentioned that the owner was busy spending time with their kids on the weekend and could not check emails ‍. Smh, pizza is pizza, it is good, but it's not next world pizza and given the limitations definitely not worth it. I don't like batching businesses but it's honestly the vibe I got and it wasn't good. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
The pizzas are burnt. Not crispy; BURNT I hope it to not be a new 'pizza trend' It was useless to complain since it's no longer about customers service anywhere you go these days. Not surprising who their customer base seems to be. I will definitely not be recommending this establishment.

Yelp
Came here for Sonoran Restaurant Week (2nd week in Sept 2023) and sampled this year's special prix fix menu. We opted for the salad; pizza; and white choc desert tart. We arrived on time for our 5:30 reservations and the small venue was full with all 5 tables occupied and the long communal table in the center (which seats 12) about 1/2 full. Taking a look around we were the only ones that appeared to be sampling their Sonoran menu... and later learned why. For $35 you get three, pre-selected items; a seasonal salad; a Sonoran-specific pizza; and a desert tart. If purchased ala carte these items would have only been about $30. Moreover, the pizza - with shaved red onions, diced red chilis, diced lemon, fontina cheese, and prickly pear creme - was my least favorite of all of the "regularly" available pizzas. It was oniony, very spicy, and lacking any meaty texture/flavor. On the positive side, the salad was extraordinary - consisting of shaved kohlrabi, apples, cheddar, pecans, all tossed in a mustard vinaigrette. Not indicated on the menu but evident in the salad was about a teaspoon's worth of delicious pomegranate seeds. It is a very small salad but with exquisite flavors and textures. Finally, the desert - a Monsoon white chocolate with mesquite graham cracker crust and honey. As with all of their desserts, an absolutely sumptuous symphony of slowly revealing flavors. In this case sweet, salt, and even some surprise/peculiar smokiness. The dollop of creme on the side was a perfect compliment. Be forewarned, the tart wedge is barely 2 inches wide at the back and tapers to a slender point just 4-1/2 inches later. We LOVE Anello's but could not recommend the Sonoran specific menu this year, given its main offering and the "padded" pricing. Parking is largely back-alley only and can get impossibly packed when the adjacent bar is in full swing. Speaking of which, one incredibly cool element is the mutual arrangement Anello's and the bar (Crooked Tooth) have, permitting one another's pizzas/beers to cross pollinate the other's establishment!
google avatar

Nancy F.

Yelp
One of my favorite places for pizza. I ordered from the to go window on the side of the building . Staff was nice and my pizzas were terrific. I love the Bianco and added pepperoni. The crust was soft and chewy, and the pepperoni was crispy around the edges! So good.
google avatar

Chase E.

Yelp
The crust, sauce and cheese are the best. Truly another level of perfection. Price, treatment and location. Best in town.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
This place is a gem! NOT just another pizza place. This place is beyond legit. I loved everything about it. Decor is minimal with some community seating. Warmed green olives with rosemary, Carrot salad with garlic and a Margherita pizza with sausage. I cut up the olives and put them on pizza. Ate everything! washed it all down with a wine suggested by the server. Super friendly place and very hands on owner/ chef. Worth a Michelin Star and i'm not joking! Well done!
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
Excellent service. Very very good food. Real authentic. Finally a place that uses quality ingredients that compliments their cuisine. The wine/beverage pairing was well thought out.
google avatar

Alyse H.

Yelp
Pizza verde was different and delicious and the sourdough crust was tasty . No need for gluten free or me last night.... I don't usually eat pizza but I love it. It doesn't love me back. This one dig!
google avatar

Karina V.

Yelp
We had a great experience at Anello! I had wanted to try this restaurant ever since I walked by about a month ago. We were able to make a reservation and they were so flexible and easy to work with even on a Saturday night. I love the decor and overall aesthetic! We got the Bianca pizza with pepperoni. It was perfect for two. We wish we were more hungry so we could have also tried another pizza. The crust was soft and good and the topping all paired deliciously together. We also ordered the chocolate tart and that was perfectly balanced! Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Crystal V.

Yelp
The crust was crusting. This place is small, very, very small. I knew where I was going (kinda) and almost missed it. Which makes it part of its gem, and rewardingly good. The Verde pizza hits differently with w/ its pistachio bits on top of a yeasty charred-to-perfection crust. Anello isn't your quick weeknight binge pizza. It's a moment/ celebration/special occasion pizza, that deserves your full attention. This pizza was brought mind not by adverts but by an ex-Tucsonan turned Bostonian (who should know his pizza by now). Es una chulada de peeksa.
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
When I moved to Tucson a few months ago, I was concerned about not finding food as good as I used to get in LA. Anello is in one of the more nondescript storefronts I've seen in a long time. I don't know if they are trying to keep the place secret but it would certainly be difficult considering the great pizza offered here. I'm used to buffalo mozzarella on Margherita pies. While they don't do that, it doesn't lessen the pizza. Their crust is very good and flavorful -- the result of using good flour and a very hot oven. The surprise for me was the very sweet sauce. It may have been the sweetest I've ever had but it's a good balance against their mozzarella. They truly know what they're doing and that's comforting. Their Bianca pie was just as flavorful and I just love that I can depend upon a place this as I settle into Tucson (and learn how to pronounce Tucsonan.) While I did takeout, the interior of this space is very nice and I'd be glad to settle in for many slices and many glasses of wine.
google avatar

Ted V.

Yelp
Best pizza I've had; and I've had great pizza. From Phoenix to Manhattan to Boulder, this is the best crust. I think there are 3 reasons: 1) sourdough starter, 2) mix of flour, and 3) wood fired. The dedication of the staff sets Anello apart as well. Everybody working here cares...deeply. Bathrooms are nice too. That matters! BTW - check out the bathroom books - it's no wonder they're such a solid restaurant. Last thing - the cocktail program is small but fire. The White Negroni is outstanding.
google avatar

Alisha G.

Yelp
My Fiancé and I were visiting Tucson for the Gem Show and he found this place with his amazing Pizza sense. The crust of their pizza not only has fantastic texture but great flavor as well. My pizza snob said it was better than the ones he tried in Naples. We tried the verde and the margarita, love the tangyness of the tomato sauce not overly sweet. Definitely get their seasonal vegetables, it was turnip when we went and they turned an ordinarily sad vegetable (root and greens) into a delicious savory starter. To finish we did the blue corn lemon tart, also a fantastic hit. I can't wait for the gem show next year so I can come back here
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
You know how sometimes you'll be smothering yourself in an extraordinary meal and yet you still might notice a little something that could bring it a wee bit closer to perfection? Well, at Anello they bring perfection to a place that only psychonauts know. Yeah, there's no room in your mouth for improvement. Holyfuckballs they know what they are doing. And the ambiance is classy yet super chill. And the people and service who make this experiential rocketship of a place launch every day are like the most wonderful parallel friends of yours you can imagine. Go!!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Teeny, tiny in terms of size but huge in terms of flavor! According to legend, this was the point man for Chris Bianco when he opened in Tucson and ultimately decided to close. We went on a busy Saturday night and it was packed but we had a reservation and got right in after a brief wait. Ordered a Roasted Beet Salad and it was perfect. Then onto the Focaccia with a light fig jam and light and airy dough with the perfect amount of crisp: scrumptious! Next came the pizzas and we had a Margarita and a Bianca and they were both spot on with thin, crunchy crust, perfect seasoned and absolutely delicious. Limited wine and beer menu but overall worth the trip and the wait.

Brie F.

Yelp
Extremely loud. Lots of communal seating which is not ideal when the whole place is so loud because everyone is yelling at each other. Food tastes good but is somewhat overpriced. Portion sizes are modest but quality was high. Monsoon chocolate torte was delicious! Service was good. Location has sketchy parking -- my dates car was broken into while we were eating. Better lighting is probably necessary.
google avatar

Valerie A.

Yelp
Small little pizza gem in downtown Tucson. You'll find a few tables and a community table in the center of the restaurant with a direct view to the oven and kitchen prep. Very pizza aromatic and simple clean menu. Service was super friendly and excellent. We had about a 20 minute wait but they text you when your table is ready. You can wait at the next door brewery until your table is ready. Parking is along the side alleyway. We tried the margarita and marinara pizza with pepperoni. They also offer a small sampling of wines and beers from local/regional wineries and breweries.

Smp P.

Yelp
When we visit family in Tucson, we usually visit Anello. However, talk about inconsistency. The last couple of times we've done take out, the pizza has been burnt. I understand that they cook them in the pizza oven but to have burnt pizza to take home twice is such a disappointment.

Angela A.

Yelp
Delicious hidden gem. Pizza is out of this world, I have never had such a savory pizza, every bite counts. Service was great and homey. Only disappointing thing was not buying more!

Hal And Jodi B.

Yelp
Pizza was very good with excellent crust. Pizza selection was very customizable . Service was attentive . Ambiance was clean and nice with very cool front door. No signage out front but many regulars present.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
This is the best restaurant in Tucson. Small menu, but everything is perfect. I am so glad it exists. If it ever closed, I would kill myself.
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
This place is hard to find but definitely worth the visit. The service wasn't great but the food was. My only complaint would be the char on my pizza otherwise I'd say they really nailed the food, drinks, and desserts!
google avatar

Alexis L.

Yelp
The pizzas are wood fired and excellent! They come with limited toppings but fresh ingredients. Service is excellent as well. The place is tiny so make reservations in advance or order takeout and go to the bar across the alley to eat.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
I ordered two pizzas, Verde and Bianca. The parsley puree on the Verde was a great flavor. Service was great, and the ambiance in the afternoon was laid back and friendly. I will be back.
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
My favorite pizza spot. Always fresh and inventive and seasonal, and the crust is the best anywhere. You won't be disappointed.
