The Best Mediterranean Restaurants In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Turn your sights to Ararat Kebab & Gyros for the best Turkish-style kebabs in the city. This small Tenderloin restaurant serves take-out gyro wraps under bright fluorescent lights. The combo shish kebab plate is the way to go, with a hearty mix of charred lamb and juicy chicken shish kebab, kofte that’s got enough garlic, cumin, and mint to make you quiver, a tingling hot sauce, and a few slices of gyro for good measure. And sure, eating in feels like hanging out at the dentist’s office, but it’s totally worth it for the free, strong Turkish tea that ties the whole meal together." - ricky rodriguez, patrick wong, julia chen 1

I came all the way from Chicago and had the chance to try the pide here — it was absolutely worth it! The dough was perfectly baked, the topping was flavorful and fresh, and everything was served hot and well-prepared. The portion size was generous and very satisfying. On top of that, the place has a clean and welcoming atmosphere. Definitely one of the best pide experiences I’ve ever had – highly recommended!

First time here today and it was pretty good. Got a kofte kebab wrap which was $15. Pretty tender and seasoned well. Nice hummus and garlic sauce. Service was good too, chill waiter/owner. Want to give it 5 stars but felt like the size was kind of small for $15. And it was good but not mind blowing. I’ll come back to try more of the menu though. Also this place is in a pretty rough part of town so be a bit careful if you come here in person.

We went to Ararat Kebab & Gyros, but as we walked there from our hotel, we were greeted by a terrible sight and smell. Normally, I don't get put off easily, but there was a strong smell of urine everywhere, and the neighborhood looked very dangerous. The place itself is very small and could have been opened in a more reliable location. I ordered a wrap and honestly didn't like it at all. However, my spouse ordered a home-cooked chickpea dish, and it was truly delicious. I think this place would be much better if it focused on more authentic, traditional meals instead of wraps. Since I went with my family, we were a little scared while walking down that street. The place doesn't feel very suitable for families. If it were a bit more spacious, it might be a better option, but in its current state, I wouldn't choose to go back. We didn't return a second time and went to a different, safer place the next day. My advice for families is to use a taxi to get there—do not walk. The smell alone will make you feel sick and ruin your appetite before you even arrive.

This restaurant is honestly one of the best I’ve been to in the area. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm welcome and a very friendly atmosphere. The staff are attentive without being overwhelming, and they really make you feel comfortable as a guest. The food was outstanding — every dish we tried was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. You can really tell that they care about quality and details here. The service was smooth and professional, and despite the restaurant being busy, everything was handled with patience and a smile. I also loved the overall vibe of the place. It’s cozy, clean, and perfect whether you’re coming for a casual dinner or bringing guests for a special occasion. It’s rare to find a restaurant that balances great food, excellent service, and a welcoming environment all at once, but this place absolutely does. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a spot where you can truly enjoy both the meal and the experience. I’ll definitely be coming back again and again!

I moved to the Bay Area from Armenia in 2023, and this is the closest to Armenian food I've found so far. Delicious food, and the Kurdish people running the place were quite nice to me. I don't speak their language, but I still felt welcome and will be returning for the great food + similar music and atmosphere.

One of the worst meals I’ve ever had. Atmosphere is what you expect from a hole in the wall in the TL. Staff being way too flirty. Door blew open through the entire meal. It was cold and uncomfortable. The dolma I ordered to take home were store-bought, and actually hard and dry. They were cold and gross, and tasted really old and freezer-burnt. The pita was store-bought bread as well. The chicken and lamb kebabs were tasteless, dry and overcooked. Nothing was fresh. Way overpriced— $40 for one appetizer, one combo plate with one extra kebab, and no drink!!! Extremely disappointed as this was a birthday meal for a family member. I was misled by the other reviews. Will never go back for any reason.

Google
I ordered the chicken gyro wrap, which was truly delicious. The front desk lady provided excellent service—definitely a 10 out of 10. The food was prepared in less than 10 minutes. I highly recommend this restaurant if you enjoy tasty Mediterranean halal food.

Yelp
Wow wow wow. When I saw all 5 stars here I knew I had to check it out, and the hype is real! My crew and I tried the appetizer sampler which I would suggest getting---the falafel was phenomenal, baba was amazing (I feel like baba can be really hit or miss) and the pita was so fresh. As for mains I got the chicken gyro platter and there was so much food for the price! I'm glad my husband and I split. My brother-in-law tried the German style kebab and it was also amazing and presented in a super flaky pita. We went with the Turkish delight for dessert which was just too sweet for me but if you have a sweet tooth you'll love. Can't go wrong here!

Lucas M.

Yelp
I would highly recommend the salmon plate from here. The fish was cooked to perfection, and their rice was delicious! The German style Kebap was interesting, basically vegetables/meat/cheese sandwiched between a hamburger-style bun. I've never had a kebab like that, but it was tasty! We also liked their babaganoush and spanikopita. My girlfriend said the pastry could've used more filling, but I thought it was a good balance. I'll be back to try their rice pudding next! Thanks guys. Hope you have many more customers in your future.

Yelp
Nice take on some of my favorite foods. Man at the counter was very friendly, with suggestions as well. Smallish dining area, but every table in the place was taken! If I'm ever back in the San Francisco area I will for sure try to stop in again.

Yelp
Had the chicken shish wrap and chicken gyro wrap and it was not good. Super plain and not a fan of the sauces in the wrap either.
google avatar

Aaron Z.

Yelp
I had the Street Style Beef and Lamb Gyro Wrap and it was very good. This was surprising because I walked it quite a ways before sitting down to eat, so it was getting cold and looked kind of small. No! It had big meaty flavor and a great (full fat) yogurt sauce. It's very satisfying and an excellent price for San Francisco. The service was kind and professional (I always giggle when strangers call me boss). The neighborhood isn't the best of course, but the inside is light, bright, and new with a good amount of seating so next time I'll probably just eat there. A solid addition to the local food options!

Yelp
Nice restaurant the food is tasty,, well seasoned and fresh. The meats were tender and the lamb is delicious. The chicken was tender. The salad was crispy and the dressing was very healthy. The service is great. The restaurant is very clean. The portions are generous.

Yelp
Their lamb kebabs and rice are delicious! Meat is juicy and just the right amount of seasoning. Veggies are fresh too. Perfect for a quick work lunch. I'll be back!

Yelp
Love this place!! I get the chicken soup at least once a week almost every week. It's fire and tastes homemade. I tried the street lamb gyro wrap today for the first and it was yummyyyyy! The employees here are so nice and service is quick. New fave Mediterranean spot for sure :)
google avatar

Vasanth R.

Yelp
The street style chicken shish gyro is bomb. The yogurt sauce in it pairs really well with the seasoned chicken breast meat and they throw in a couple of fries as well. I'd ask for some hot sauce on the side if you want to add some heat. This place is definitely a sleeper.

Yelp
What a great addition to the TL! Ararat just opened and their food is delicious. So far I've had the lentil soup, falafel wrap, and a falafel plate. The lentil soup is comforting and filling! And adding a bit of lemon gives it such a nice acidity. It also comes with warm pita bread. I'm not a soup person so for me to say this is good soup says a lot. The falafels are good, too. They're crunchy on the outside and densely packed on the inside. The wrap is great off your not too hungry. The plate is great when you are. Unlike the other plates, the falafel plate comes with hummus and babaghannush. I've never hat babaghannush before because I don't like eggplant. But I didn't know the plate came with it because the menu they have on the screen doesn't provide specifics. It was delicious! I may still not like eggplant but I really like babaghannush. It provided a brightness to an overall carb-y meal. The salad was also good, especially with the tahini dressing. They've remodeled the space from what it was before when it was an Indian restaurant. Is much brighter and more inviting. Service is very friendly, too. I would've gotten some baklava, but I had real mochi donuts earlier and that was enough sweets for me. I'm definitely coming back to try their street style wrap and baklava.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place, as my first visit was very good. Second visit, not so much. Ordered the Street Style Lamb and Gyro Wrap. It was very disappointing for the fact that the pita bread was basicially like a Taco Bell taco shell. The whole gyro pita bread was so dry and stale that it fell apart during the first bite. I was under the impression that pita bread gyros were just suppose to be so soft. This just was awful and a messy gyro. The taste was great, but the pita bread was just a cracker. Just awful.

Yelp
Food is clean and delicious . Server was polite. Unfortunately neighborhood was not attractive . Great fast food though

Yelp
Great delivery option. Very reasonably priced for the portion. Always fast and hot. Great homemade hot sauce. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Great local spot. I live nearby and frequent them for their vegan options. Love their lentil soup with pita! Friendly and quick service. Location isn't amazing, but I don't fault the owners. They keep their store clean and welcoming.

Yelp
The best mediterranean in SF downtown. Food was soooo yumyyy. Owner was very friendly, He always took care of us ! We've orderd Humus, Tatziki for starters !! Kofte and Combo Gyro plate were so good !!

Yelp
I really like this place. Great food with large portions. Pricing is as expected. The lamb gyro is delicious, both in platter and wrap form. And you really should try the desserts. The kunefe is a standout, as is the rice pudding. The interior is bright and clean, while the gentlemen behind the counter are friendly. Service is quick.

Yelp
The food is so good , healthy and delicious , but the only thing that it takes time , I was waiting for 25 minutes to get a normal plate , compared to a different restaurants in burlingame , they give you Baklava for free , and tea , however this restaurant doesn't offer baklava but they off tea and you need to go and get it from a corner , I think they need to work more for a quick meal nd better service !

Yelp
My new favorite. I've had the combo shwarma twice because I realized I ate it the first time without any sauce
google avatar

Sophia L.

Yelp
I savored the chicken wing plate paired with a side of rice during my visit. The distinct charred flavor of the wings left a lasting impression, arriving hot and freshly prepared. The yellow rice, characterized by its fluffy and buttery flavor was exceptionally delectable. This establishment, a charming family-owned venture, exuded warmth and hospitality. The husband, displaying impeccable politeness, promptly took my order upon my arrival. While the overall experience was delightful, a more reasonable pricing point would enhance the likelihood of my return.

Yelp
Best middle eastern in the area. We got the gyro both German and regular style and while both were wonderful I preferred the other over the German. Very finished and beautifully spiced. I would say it is compatible to Truly Mediterranean tho quite different. But certainly that caliber. There was so much more to try but its a great new addition. Please support this wonderful place, restaurants are struggling to stay around.

Bishoy F.

Yelp
The food was delicious and fresh. The store was clean and well-organized. The team was friendly and helpful

Yelp
Fresh ingredients and fast service! This is going to be my new spot for Mediterranean! The place was remodeled and is super clean and nice inside.

Yelp
Came here with my husband and the food and ambiance is great! All of the items we ordered had a lot of flavor and the staff was very friendly. The restaurant was also very clean which we appreciate. We are looking forward to coming back, especially for the chicken soup!
google avatar

Bruce B.

Yelp
the food here is really good, everything is fresh, the meat is perfectly seasoned , only the rice has a lul too much oil but the salad is good with dressing and fresh hot sauce.
google avatar

Yelp
Doner Kabob!!! This closest thing I have found to the Done Kebab places I love in Germany. So good.
google avatar

Jasmina T.

Yelp
I am careful how much salt I consume, but falafel wrap was not salty enough Still very good. The cake was great. I think it is called revani. Baklava was so fresh as if it was made that day. Really, really tasty and I know baklava as we Bosnians also have it in our cuisine and make it for Eid or bayram, especially. I was surprised they don't have Turkish coffee or any coffee on the menu.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food and service. Donor is authentic and delicious. The lamb is flavourful and tender and cooked perfectly! Close enough to Greece to remind me of home.

Marlon O.

Yelp
Just became a gyro guy. I'm not the most experienced consumer of gyros, so you'll have to excuse my enthusiasm, but I genuinely haven't had a better gyro than what I found here. Hence the "5-star" rating.

Jeff R.

Yelp
First visit to Ararat yesterday. Love the place! Solid beef and lamb wrap. The most difficult thing is deciding what to order from the menu. Very much looking forward to my next visit and trying the next item on the menu. Service was fantastic. Thank you very much h for hosting us!

Yelp
Finally a place in SF that makes a German style Döner Kebab, and a really good one at that. Friendly owner, and seems to already be popular in the community.

Mansur S.

Yelp
This place is new, since I did explored whenever Im close this place try to get there and order something even a soup because everything is super fresh and nice.

Kevin D.

Yelp
Amazing food!! I've lived in the neighborhood 23 years and this was hands down the best food I've ever eaten! I had the salmon plate, my wife had the Greek salad with salmon, they were absolutely delicious. My salmon plate came with a salad and flatbread, my wife's plate came with flatbread as well. The salmon was amazing, and the rice was some of the best rice I've ever had. We have ordered food from here several times now (chicken wrap) and it has been great every time. Very happy these guys are in the neighborhood!

H K.

Yelp
Delicious food and generous portions! The place has been recently renovated, it's bright, clean, and relaxing. It's family owned and operated. Everyone is so nice and helpful. Definitely recommend it!

Xu L.

Yelp
"I had the most delicious gyro around Union Square with a friendly service and a very clean restaurant. I highly recommend it, the prices are very reasonable."

Lorena S.

Yelp
As a flight attendant I always look for healthy options around my accommodation and Mediterranean cuisine is always my go to since it's a well balanced diet. With that being said it came down to Falafel City and Ararat. I'm glad I chose Ararat! The moment I walked in I felt at like I was eating at a friends house. The man who took my order was very nice. I immediately knew what I wanted which was the Chicken Shish Kebab. For dessert I had a slice of cake/pudding. I don't remember the name but it had coconut on top. The server/cook was also very sweet and attentive. The chicken plate came with rice, roasted bell peppers, salad and a cabbage salad. Food tasted homemade and delicious. My new go to when I'm in SF!

Emine F.

Yelp
Literally amazing Turkish style food! I'm just visiting San Francisco and ended up stopping into this hole-in-the-wall place. It was a great decision! The staff was so friendly and immediately offered me free Turkish tea. I ordered the chicken gyro wrap and the falafel wrap. DELICIOUS and quick! I recommend!!

Jonas S.

Yelp
this place is remarkable. generous portions, deelish flavor, sauces a+, and the meat is ineffably tender. will eat here as much as i can. really friendly service too, and fast!

Teri G.

Yelp
Love seeing new businesses open up in the neighborhood. The people working we're kind and welcoming. The highlight of our meal was the delicious banagannush! Look forward to returning and trying more things on the menu.

Penny W.
