The Best New Restaurants On The Westside

"This plant-based sandwich shop is a great addition to the collection of lovely little lunch spots that fuel Montana Avenue. B&T's Deli goes all-in on 1960s nostalgia with checkerboard tile flooring and Motown playlists, but at no point will you feel like you’re at Mel’s Diner while eating sandwiches packed with vegetables straight from the farmers market. We appreciate that the combos here don't rely on fake meats of unknown origins. Early favorites include the marinated zucchini and olive-filled Pegasus and the Susie Green, a sweet, briney “whitefish” celery root salad on an open-face Jyan Isaac bagel. Get one of those and find a sunny spot on their peaceful sidewalk patio. " - brant cox, arden shore, sylvio martins

Google
Shared the Old Sport and the Wanda with my partner and both were packed with flavor. The Jyan Isaac bread was warm and perfectly chewy. Santa Monica finally has a creative plant-based sandwich spot. We’ll be back soon!

Google
Wow- I got The Susie Green and it was outstanding! Such a delicious plant based alternative to the white fish bagel I grew up with. The flavors were perfectly balanced and there was a generous portion of toppings on each side of the open faced bagel. The “whitefish” was made out of celery and tasted so good. I cannot wait to try their other sandwiches.

Google
SO AMAZING!!!! i loved this place. wonderful, tasty sandwiches, to go food, and treats. i can’t get over the pistachio cookie.

Google
Friendly service from the few times I’ve been here. Note: make sure to grab a number as they go by the numbering system pay attention cause sometimes they might skip you Got the old sport, which is a chickpea salad sandwich. It was fresh and good but was it worth $20 no it wasn’t. The Pegasus or The Peter looks good but unsure if I’d be willing to spend $20 for another sandwich. Ambiance was clean plus they had outdoor seating too. There’s parking in the back or metered on Montana.

Google
Plant based Deli with amazing and super friendly staff. The food was on the salty side for my taste, however it was flavorful, it was made with fresh and good quality ingredients. Street parking in the front No restroom Limited seating

Google
So tasty! I didn’t realize it was all plant based until I walked in and peered at the menu. The sandwiches are inventive, satisfying, and delicious! I didn’t intend to eat the whole thing, as it seemed like enough for 2 meals, but it was too good to save for later. The sandwiches go beyond just basic vegetarian options, and as someone who eats vegetarian a lot- it’s a nice change up to have more to choose from that is flavorful and well prepared.

Google
Amazing plant-based sandwiches! Amazing gluten-free bread! literally the most flavorful sandwich I’ve ever had!

Google
Mind blown. What makes this place special is its Ciabatta bread, their spreads, and their fresh ingredients. The meadow soprano was divine with the marinated artichoke. The guys who make the sandwiches are so nice and enthusiastic. Decor and vibes 10/10. As they say in their description, this is a place for sandwich lovers.

Yelp
I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years. I've had my fair share of vegetarian and vegan food, and it takes a lot honestly to impress me... I literally remember when the first garden burger came out! I was actually blown away by the garden sandwich today. It is one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. The service was great, restaurant is cute, the food was epic. From the bread to the marinated mushrooms to the ranch I seriously couldn't believe the flavors. The guy who helped me was nice and funny and kind. He came out from around the counter to hand me my sandwich and look me in the eye. The service was excellent. I live in Santa Clarita and I will make this drive. I give this restaurant 10 out of 10 and I am so happy that it exists! I inhaled my Sammy so I took no pics and left only napkins!

Yelp
Had a great experience at B&T's! It's a super cute spot and the staff is so wonderful! They are also dog friendly. They have some indoor and outdoor seating available. You can build your own sandwich or choose from their menu of sandwiches. They have a stamp card that if you try each sandwich on the menu, you can redeem for some of their super cute merch! We ended up getting The Old Sport, The Hot Tottie, and a potato and pasta salad. The sandwiches were good, but pricey. The potato and pasta salads were so delicious and would get again. Loved how refreshing and packed with flavor they were! If you're looking for imitation plant-based mock-meats, this isn't the place. Their fillings are made with ingredients like eggplant, potato, chickpeas, mushroom, etc. so it feels healthier and I wouldn't feel bad about eating a deli sandwich every day from B&T's. Parking is metered but easy to find. We came on a Sunday and meter parking in front was free.

Yelp
The moment we walked in we were greeted with a welcoming smile and a "How can we help you?" The place was very quaint with a couple tables inside and few outside. The food was amazing! We tried the Meadow Soprano, a plant-based Italian sub and the Susie Green, a "whitefish salad style" vegan sandwich! Definitely worth another visit to try other sandwich creations!

Yelp
Very good sandwich, nice staff, ambiance was clean plus they had outdoor seating too. There's parking in the back or metered on Montana.

Yelp
We've been eager to check out this spot for some time now, and we finally did. Let me tell you, the sandwiches were absolutely fantastic! What's even better is that my husband, being a vegetarian, was so excited to discover a new place that offers such delicious options. Highly recommended give it a try.

Yelp
OMG. I'm not even vegan but these sandwiches might have changed my mind, you don't even miss the meat! Everything is very flavorful, I can't wait to go back and try more. This little shop is perfect, from the stylish decor to the cute merchandise, and their sweet dog who loves friends! The owners are so sweet and helpful also!!

Yelp
We stopped into this cute new vegan and vegetarian deli shop on Montana.l after an afternoon on the beach looking for a bite to eat. We walked in unknowing it was vegan until we read the menu, but I'm always willing to give things a try. I got the Wanda and my partner had the Old Sport. The Wanda seemed to be a play off a Roast Beef Sandwich and the Old Sport was a play off the chicken salad sandwich. Both were tasty, although not really close to the original from which it was inspired from. I will say for vegan sandwiches though they were high quality, tasty, and hit the lunch craving we had.

Yelp
Sooo good! So flavorful and best gluten free bread! I got the#4 The Peter. Definitely coming back to try the others.

Yelp
Wow! What an incredible concept! Have you heard of a fully plant-based deli with a plethora of sandwich options? We hadn't until we chanced upon this one in Santa Monica! Love their innovative menu, fresh & flavorful sandos, yummy spreads, great service and modern decor. It's a clean, lovely deli that caters to all dietary needs - they have sandwiches that mimic meat-loving folks, but they also cater to health conscious vegans who prefer to eat plant-based. Hubby & I got the Pegasus - it was perfectly packed and labeled (mine sans onion). Very tasty overall, though I might try the other options the next time around. I found myself picking out some olives & pepperoncini as it was too strong for me. The bread was a tad too chewy but that could just be me. I'm still very enthusiastic to keep returning as I'm delighted with this fully vegan deli with so options to pick from! Please note that they are closed Mondays & Tuesdays!!

Yelp
I always love a good sandwich and B&T's DELIVERED!!! I got the Brunch Club Sandwich and it tasted very fresh and yummy. Definitely recommend it! I am very happy that there is a new sandwich place on Montana Avenue. It was very much needed. B&T's has a fun Jewish deli vibe with good food and good service! Just to note...the food here is all plant based so if you're looking for real meat then this isn't the place for you. I personally eat meat, but I am always down to try a good plant based alternative and I was very happy with my sandwich. I can't wait to try more of their sandwiches!

Yelp
Plant-based deli focused on vegetarian sandwiches on Montana Ave in Santa Monica. It's their soft opening so things are still coming together, but credit to them for making good sandwiches in a timely fashion and a friendly manner. I had The Wanda, described as "The one for the carnivores. Soon to be your roast beef replacement." It's marinated eggplant with horseradish aioli, lettuce, tomato, onion, & Calabrian chilis on a sourdough roll. I love eggplant, and this is tasty, though I wish the eggplant was piled high like a roast beef deli sandwich. The Susie Green is made with a delicious Jyan Isaac bagel topped with cellery root "whitefish" salad with lemon, capers, dill, onion, and heirloom tomatoes. Overall a pretty good sandwich spot. It won't displace Bay Cities in my book but it's a nice alternative that's close to home. Plus it's next door to Rori's ice cream. Looking forward to further visits.

Yelp
New vegan deli in Santa Monica that I wanted to try. I get that my visit was after them being open for only about a month. And I love supporting independently owned businesses. I had The Old Sport that was chic pea-centric. It was generally good. Yes, there could have been more ingredients in the sandwich but my disappointment was the bread. On its own it was a good, fresh sourdough hoagie-type of roll but in a sandwich it was not yielding, meaning you had to really bite down hard which consistently resulted in the ingredients spilling off to the sides. I like hearty breads but something a little bit softer would help contain the sandwich contents with each bite. I understand this is not fast food and each sandwich is lovingly made by hand so be prepared for a wait, we waited about 15-20 minutes.

Yelp
For starters, grab a ticket, just like at an old school deli counter and order when they call your number. 100% Plant based sandwiches that would please a carnivore since from the sampling I had, they offer an abundance of flavor. Three of us dining together (at one of the five petite tables out front) tried 3 different sandwiches and requested they be sliced in thirds so we could easily sample them all. Mato Monster with big juicy ripe tomatoes on sourdough bread (just reminded me of an old school garden fresh tomato sandwich with sprouts). Susie Green celery root "whitefish" salad on a Jean Issac bagel had a just the right amount of acidity to it, it really doesn't take like whitefish, but is does taste good! Goddaughter with marinated eggplant on a sourdough roll was straightforward and flavorful. Wanted to get the Meadow Soprano, but they didn't have the artichoke heart spread and were so apologetic about it (no problem, we'll be back for sure). In addition to all their specialty sandwiches, you can create your own, from their wide array of vegetarian ingredients. They have chips, packaged cookies, bottles beverages. The owners and staff are super friendly and ready to become part of the community and I think they will be around for many years to come.

Yelp
With so few all vegan places in this city, B&T's is a welcome addition. The sandwiches are quite good, really great selection of interesting sandwiches. Nice people who work there.
google avatar

Riley G.

Yelp
SO GOOD! Highly recommend B&T's Deli whether you eat plant based or not. We tried the Old Sport and the Peter and both were 10/10!! Amazing bread, fresh ingredients, flavorful, and filling. The restaurant itself was super cute, service was excellent, and quick. My only regret is the food was so delicious we ate it all before I could take a photo!
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
I got the goddaughter. All the bread was totally covered in the oil and vinegar marinade, it was quite gross to handle. It is structurally one of the worst sandwiches I've had in my life. The taste was merely bad - vinegar overwhelmed all other flavors. I really hope they get consistent quality. We also got the chickpea sandwich which was good.

Jamie R.

Yelp
That sandwich was amazing! So delicious and so fresh and they offer gluten-free bread. Highly recommend.

Craig K.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! The Susie Green sandwich was delightful. I'm not even vegan, but will come back just for that. Friendly staff and a cozy vibe make it even better. Highly recommend!

Yelp
B&T's Deli has such a cool, gentrified old-school vibe--it's a fresh, new spot with beautiful branding. I tried the "Old Sport" sandwich and it was delicious. The dill, chickpeas, lettuce, and tomato were so flavorful, and I love that they use wholesome, whole food ingredients instead of meat substitutes. The gluten-free bread was also top-notch. The staff is nice and helpful. If you're craving a satisfying yet healthy sandwich, definitely check out B&T's.

Yelp
There's a lot of potential here, and I'd love to come back and update to a 5-star review very soon once the soft opening phase is done. I love that the menu here features mostly vegetables and not fake meats and cheeses. The bread was super fresh and definitely the star of the sandwich. Overall, I wish it had just a little more inside - as a chef myself, I get that high quality ingredients cost more, but for a $20 sandwich, there could at least be more than a finger-sized strip of lettuce. I've tried a few things now and I think many of the sandwiches would benefit from a drizzle of an herbaceous vinaigrette, like the Italian subs they are trying to emulate. I've had the Meadow Soprano twice now and noticed both times that the house-prepared artichokes are just a bit too on the al dente side - slightly longer cooking time will yield the perfect texture. On the logistics side, would be nice if they placed the dispenser with the numbers to be served at the door so people don't have to fight their way through the line to grab one. And I get that service is slower than usual during the soft opening so wait a few weeks to come here if you're expecting a quick grab and go situation. Final thought - really hoping they will offer a plain chip option in the future for those of us who don't like flavored chips (including vinegar!).

Yelp
Got the hot tottie and le bon Bertie. So darn good! My only complaint is that there wasn't more, and I was mad when my husband and I finished them! The whole shop is adorable and service is excellent and their recommendations were 100. This is going to be our new local go-to sandwich spot.

Jeff P.

Yelp
Today I enjoyed The Pegasus. Another amazing sandwich! The tomato was a large slice and so fresh. Definitely from the Santa Monica Farmers Market where they shop twice a week for all the veggies for the sandwiches. B&T keeps adding more amazing sandwiches to the menu and the OG's just keeping getting better. A must visit!

Olivia W.

Yelp
Not sure how I haven't posted a 5-star review about B&T's yet. We love this vegan deli and try to come as often as possible (not often enough!). Amazing veggie sandwiches actually bursting with flavor. Completely in awe at the creativity and range of flavors and ingredients. The owners and staff are so so nice. Extremely cool place. It's our goal to try all of the sandwiches at least once.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Delicious! Fresh ingredients and friendly staff. Lots of options. Definitely recommend.

Mark F.

Yelp
Hands down the best vegan sandwiches that exist. Each made with care and incredible combinations of ingredients (my family picked up 4 different ones our first visit to share and sample) -- nailing classics and originals alike. One of the rare gems that the vegan and non-vegans in our fam get equally excited about. Owners are super cool as well, and we love the vibe of the place.
google avatar

Danielle R.

Yelp
Been waiting for this place to open but it was a $20 sandwich with so little ingredients inside you couldn't even make a quarter of a salad from them if you dumped them into a bowl. That sandwich should've been $8 at most for the lack of ingredients you get (this is the meadow soprano). Pretty disappointed
google avatar

Isadora S.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place .... Plant based and new! The owners are cuties and the staff super sweet..... the vibe is cute but it's the food......the bread is chewy and not good. I thought that they were using a local baker's bread but they only use that bread on one bagel sandwich. The filling inside of the sandwiches just wasn't good .. no salt and pepper . Not enough oil or flavor :/ I wanted more ... they need a cookbook... I won't be back ;( tastes like college dorm food

Peggy W.

Yelp
having been a meat lover and a lover of Italian, drippy sub sandwiches all my life, I approached B&T's Deli with trepidation. however, after my first bite, I was hooked. The bread was absolutely delicious, which is so necessary on a sandwich, but not common. I had the goddaughter. This sandwich is made with a marinated eggplant. The lovely owner told me that the eggplant was marinated in her beautiful mother's recipe. all the sandwiches here are made from the freshest ingredients and are all organic. The ambience at B&T's deli is so adorable. And I would use the same adjective to describe the owners who are friendly and warm. This place has a neighborhood feel that welcomes everyone.

Nikki B.

Yelp
THE best vegan sandwiches I've ever had and I love that there's no meat substitutes. The owners and staff are super nice and I love the overall vibe and branding. Highly recommend.

Heather B.

Yelp
What a lovely new addition to SM! This sparkling new restaurant has Sammie's galore, each one made with intention and love you can taste. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The Peter tasted really good! Welcome B & T's Deli! May all good things come your way and we will see you soon!

Joy L.

Yelp
Love the idea and the unique sandwiches they offer. The bread was also very tasty! But would be great if there was at least one standard vegetarian sandwich - like a raw veggie sandwich or grilled veggie sandwich loaded with tons of vegetables. That's what I envisioned walking in and was slightly disappointed they didn't have either of the two basic vegetarian sandwiches.
google avatar

Sabrina M.

Yelp
Delicious new vegan deli in Santa Monica! They specialize in vegetable focused deli sandwiches (no meat substitutes). I got #4 The Peter and a side of potato salad. Both were so good! The service was incredible, and the whole place just had an overall good vibe. I would definitely go back!
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
This is what SM truly needs! Thank you for finally opening a sandwich place, but especially one with healthier sandwiches. Thank you for organic ingredients and the option for gluten free bread as well! Most of all, it's a place everyone can eat at even vegans, and it's way better for the environment and of course the animals that are tortured daily on factory farms. Can't thank you enough for opening this place and so happy to see it so busy already.

Mohit J.

Yelp
So good. Owners are nice, great customer service and sandwiches are a hit. Love that they include the ciabatta now too as a bread option. This is my neighborhood go to spot!

Lauren F.

Yelp
I live in the area and have walked by B&Ts wanting to try, so I decided today was the day and WOW I'm happy that I did! I got the Meadow Soprano and it was delicious! It was exactly what I was looking for. I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but this place still hit the spot. Everyone that was working was very kind and quickly tended to me. Will definitely be coming back!

Beth K.

Yelp
I'm from the DC area and as a mostly vegan eater the pickings are slim. When in LA a few weeks ago we had a wonderful lunch at B&T's. The food is just amazing and satisfying. No fake meats, all veggies and so good. I'll be back!
google avatar

Andrea Y.

Yelp
I am so excited for a vegitarian, vegan, and gluten-free, friendly deli! Please be patient with them as they are still trying to figure out the operations, but I promise it is worth the wait. Especially for my celiac friends. I know how hard it is to find a yummy type of bread and a place that is mindful of our disease. I can not wait to build my own sando and try all of their sides!

Sara S.

Yelp
Really yummy! Fresh and good ingredients. Delicious bread! Got the old sport and I finished the entire thing. It's huge btw! Will defin come back to try other sandos

Peter B.

Yelp
I've been trying to incorporate more plant based choices into my diet so I'm very glad I heard about B&T's Deli. My wife and I got the Old Sport (#1), Peter (#4), Celery Root Salad and Yukon Gold Potato Salad. All were full of flavor. The staff were very friendly and the wait for my order was reasonable. Overall, it was a great first experience at B&T's. I'll definitely be back!

Christy M.

Yelp
We got the old sport, the Wanda and the Peter. And with gluten free bread. We ordered online and got a message when it would be ready. The shop is so cute and the sandwiches were so delicious. We will be back!!

Zoey B.

Yelp
A wonderful couple passionate about health and good food opened this delicious old-school style deli. The vegan sandwiches are delicious. Such a treat and WELCOME to the neighborhood Brittany and Terrence!!

Helen M.

Yelp
Went for the first time today and was very happy . The man at the counter who greeted us was charming & helpful. The goddaughter sandwich was excellent. The sandwich shoppe is exactly what we wanted , understated style & friendly . We had to buy a jar of their peppercorn spread to take home ! Can't wait to other their other sandwiches. ( And I'm not vegan , but enjoy eating tasty plant based meals without processed fake meats ! )

Lindsay P.

Yelp
Went here today, I got the Mato Monster, and it was LIFE CHANGING. Gorgeous, fresh, chewy bread; flavorful spreads, perfect tomatoes. Loved it. Can't wait to go back.
