The Best Restaurants in Eugene, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Within this brick-walled bao and noodle shop tucked away off Eugene’s park blocks, families and college kids sit down to piles of plump, handmade sheng jian bao stuffed with fillings like pork and shrimp or curried beef. Any of the shop’s dumplings or bao are winners, but Bao Bao’s beef noodle soup is an underrated star, with a pristine broth and chewy handmade noodles. Finish with a round of sweet, fluffy red bean bao, and maybe take some frozen dumplings home for later. Menus are available for carryout at both the downtown location and the Springfield restaurant." - Brenna Houck

Google
Bao Bao House is now among my favorite restaurants, I can’t comprehend how delicious it was! The beef curry bao was well-shaped, perfectly soft, and paired nicely with the freshly squeezed soy milk. I also thoroughly enjoyed the fried rice. I highly recommend this place, it’s number one in Eugene for me!

Google
We were walking around the Saturday Market and decided to duck away from the food trucks, and couldn’t be happier with our decision. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was super chill, the food was delicious. I definitely recommend heading into Bao Bao House.

Google
Fabulous place and staff. Hand made fresh food. I ordered the steamed vegetarian dumplings - well stuffed and delicious! This downtown location is usually full. I came on Thurs at 4:15- 1 other group just left, wow! However 30 min later, 4:45pm - 7 of there 8 tables were full.

Google
Amazing food. Huge portions. Very good service. I wish I lived here. I would certainly be a regular.

Google
Our family had dinner here lastnight for the first time for my birthday! It was absolutely DELICIOUS. We ordered food ranging from noodles dishes, to steak fried rice, to the fish, to various baozi's and dumplings. Everything was SO good. Even my kids ate a bunch. The owner and the staff were so nice. We will be back for sure and we recommend to anyone!

Google
Our dining experience at Bao Bao House was truly exceptional. The patio seating was perfect for enjoying the beautiful evening, and the service was impeccable. The food was absolutely delightful - comforting, flavorful, and authentic. Every dish we tried was a hit. If you're looking for a memorable meal in Eugene, this is the place to go!

Google
Great fresh, fresh food. You can watch them make the noodles, dumplings and other items. Had the curry chicken, chicken and mushroom fried rice, chicken and cheese bao, beef dry noodles, pork dumplings and spring rolls. Our table was full of food! It is hard to pick when everything looked so delicious. Good portion size. Will be going back.

Google
Our first meal in Eugene was here and it delivered. We were craving noodles and dumplings and this place hit the spot. The beef noodle soup was so clean, tasty and packed with meat. The pork dumplings were also delicious. If you’re craving a quality bowl of noodles, give this place a try. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼

Yelp
Loft looking small restaurant with authentic Chinese options. High quality . We liked the dumplings, fried rice and hot noodle soups the best . Caution: they are very busy. I would call to check what the wait is before showing up.
google avatar

Ming L.

Yelp
Solid. Mapo tofu could have had fewer inedible spices (star anise) left in the bowl. Pan fried dumplings were nicely crisped on the bottom. Chicken and cucumber salad was really nicely done. I needed a smidge more salt. Rice was undercooked a bit.

Yelp
During our move from Seattle to San Diego, we decided to have a late dinner, so I researched Asian food options. I found the perfect restaurant with dishes like Mushroom Chicken Fried Rice ($14), Handmade Vegetable Pork Wonton Soup ($11), and Special Beef Fried Noodles ($14). My friend and I shared everything, and it was all so delicious! The portions were great for leftovers, and the place itself was nice, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The servers were very accommodating and friendly. We initially sat outside, but it got chilly, so we moved indoors. We had a great dinner, and it's definitely a spot worth returning to if we have the time.

Melissa B.

Yelp
Amazing service and authentic baos! Ordered the cucumber salad and I absolutely loved it! It does have some heat to it but nothing intolerable The menu didn't have any descriptions or photos on what the dishes included so we kinda went in blind but I am so happy with the baos and salad we ordered. Plenty of food to share with a group. Will definitely come back to enjoy more food

Yelp
Sadly this is my first 1* review. I took my mom out for dinner and we decided to go here because we both love noodles and bao bao especially. We were seated only 2 other couples in the the restaurant so it was perfect. We were given menus what were EXTREMELY hard to navigate..absolutely no description on what anything was...and a lot of things were taped over and hand written and janky..We were given water by a sweet older man and then sat for well over 5 minutes looking around with no eye contact or acknowledgement never saw the girl that seated us again. So we walked over to the Hacienda Amigos next door and had a wonderful lunch. Sorry Bao Bao House I will stick to many other places for my Bao Bao.

Yelp
Definitely some of the best bao I've ever had! Service was great and we had no issues with waiting or rudeness of any sorts. There were a lot of delicious sounding items and I'm glad my friend had been there before to guide us. We had the Shanghai Pork Steamed Fried Bao Zi (very good with lots of flavor and filling), Triple Delight Dumpling (tied for favorite meal. It was mouthwatering with every single bite and bursting with flavor), Special Beef Fried Rice (other meal tied for favorite. Some of the best fried rice I've ever had) and the Mapo Tofu (also good, but not as good as everything else that we got). Too much delicious food for sure! Highly highly recommend this place!

Yelp
My family and I are visiting from LA and we randomly picked this place for lunch and it was amazing. We ordered a few dishes and shared and every dish was delicious. The curry dish and the vegetable fried rice were outta this world. I highly recommend this place for locals and visitors from out of town.
google avatar

Yelp
We had lunch there. I had the cold shrimp noodle salad and would give it a solid 3 / 5. It wasn't terrific but not terrible. My wife, a long term sinophile and traveler said the restuarant wouldn't last a Beijing minute. So, 3 stars.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Bao bao filled with shrimp. Perfectly cooked and flavorful. The "special" beef fried rice was the best fried rice I have ever had. Excellent food!

Matthews C.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. The steamed pork bao and pork dumplings are exceptional. Beef noodles without soup also excellent. An absolute must if you are in Eugene.

Yelp
Had my birthday dinner here it was sooooo good!!! My husband and I loved it. We had the buns, wonton, noodles, and dumplings. All were delicious. Be service was great. Super friendly and helpful staff.

Yelp
Good food and the service was incredibly friendly! The dumplings were my favorite:) The food was legit, chicken skins and all.

Yelp
Every time I visit Bao Bao House, I am truly blown away. They have consistent quality across both locations as well, which is great if you're ever in the Springfield area! My personal favorites are the chili oil dumplings and the Bao (obviously). However, anything on their menu is out of this world.

Donald D.

Yelp
Overpriced meh basically. Glad they had vegetarian choices (doesn't/shouldn't everyone these days?) and healthier versions (fried/unfried). Ok service.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Great little dumpling spot and Bao. Skip the ginger/goji "hot" tea. It's not very hot and comes in a tall plastic glass. I ordered the pork bao and the dough is really fresh and soft and when you bite into one you get a brothy liquidy, melt in your mouth surprise. So damn good. The dumps were pan fried and very flavorful. I like that there is a lot of chili oil right in the table. In Portland, it almost seems like they gate keep the chili oil. Not here, plenty of oil to soak your dumps.
google avatar

Kayiona G.

Yelp
THE BUNS HERE ARE AMAZING. The curry beef buns are super flavorful and reasonable for the price. I also enjoyed the pork dumplings and the shrimp fried rice. The service was pretty quick. This is a super cute, small restaurant and the workers are the sweetest. I like how fresh the dumplings and buns are. I would highly recommend coming here.
google avatar

Olivia S.

Yelp
Terrible parking since it's downtown.. but the food is really good! The restaurant itself is small but nice. The staff is very friendly!
google avatar

Eric E.

Yelp
Highly recommend! The bao buns keep me coming back, just make sure to be patient, the freshly steamed insides are quite hot. I will gladly burn my mouth time and time again, though. Also really enjoyed the XO fried rice.
google avatar

Yelp
Rdawgs beef and mushroom noodle soup had really tough meat he had a hard time chewing it but he said the broth was really good. My seafood noodle curry was good a lot of sauce and good amount of seafood in it. The boy liked his pan fried wontons much better than my wontons in red chili oil both wontons were with pork meat. Warm gogi ginger tea is what my pansa really needed. Reading all the reviews made me expect more I guess but over all if I was ever back in town I would come again.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Thursday afternoon and got seated right away. Service was fast and friendly! The restaurant is small and cozy. Everything tasted so good and fresh! Wish I lived closer this would definitely be a staple for me! Yum!

Calvin J.

Yelp
If you want food, go here. There's good food here. The people here are always kind. The waiting area for pickups is comfortable.

Yelp
TL:DR - Pan fried buns had thinner skin but still chewy. Very juicy almost like xiao long bao. Dumpling skins were a little thicker/chewy and delicious. Beef noodle soup was not too bad, but could be better. Great attentive service. Receptive to our young daughter. While there is plenty of indoor seating, walkways are narrow. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Love myself some dumplings and shanghai pan fried buns, which this place does in spades. Ordered one of each with pork and also a beef noodle soup. The shanghai pan fried buns were a bit thinner than I was expecting, but were still super chewy and perfectly browned on the bottom. Each bun had a ton of juice that reminded me of xiao long bao, but with thicker dough. The pan fried dumplings were equally delicious. Wrapped in a unique shape that resembles the ridges of dragon fruit, it had a slightly thicker/chewy skin, which I love and prefer. The beef noodle soup was pretty basic and nothing to write home about. Could have used a little more salt/flavor, but still finished it. Service was also super great. She was there when we needed her but not hovering and I really appreciate it when servers are proactive in helping us out when we bring our 2 yr old. Giving us a cup with a top and some plastic ware as well. I will say the inside is a bit cramped. There is plenty of seating, but the walkways are narrow.

Yelp
Second time trying Bao Bao House! A reliable restaurant for tasty bites in Eugene. Very flavorful and delicious. I will definitely go again. I did takeout both times so I can't judge the service or ambiance. I also ordered soy milk and it was yummy. Very light and refreshing to drink.

Yelp
Went to Bao Bao house after the ducks game on Saturday. It was very busy with about an hour wait and only two servers. The servers were hustling and they did their best to get everyone seated as fast as possible. We ordered the spicy chicken cold noodle, triple delight pan fried dumpling and pork bao zi. The noodles were good, kind of got better as you ate them too and doctored them up with some vinegar and soy. The Bao was deservingly the star with pillowy soft bun and great flavour in the pork. The triple delight dumplings were also very good. Overall despite the rush the food cane very fast once we sat down. Would come again to try some more!

Yelp
I don't have high expectations of Chinese foods outside of the San Francisco Bay Area and I took my chance to finally check it out. Dinnertime arrival after a long drive, we were hungry and in search of something to eat. we came across the I was looking for some Chinese comfort foods. Surprisingly, the food was very good. We ordered the pork rib rice and the fried curry beef bao zhi to share--it was plenty for 2. The rice was served separately from the pork dish--very nice that my rice was not soaked in sauce & with 2 scoops on the plate, it was easy to split. There was a good amount of pork ribs and they were meaty--other places may "cheat" you and give you fatty pieces. but this was not our experience here. The sauce was perfect, not overly salty and had a nice sweet finish--reminded me of similar dishes I ate growing up. The curry beef bao zhi were also very delicious...filled with meat. The ratio of bao to meat was perfect--not too doughy. I just felt it could have had a little more curry flavor. It wasn't too busy on our visit--late evening dinner, but there was a steady flow of pick up orders. Service was prompt and attentive; shortly after we were seated, they asked for our order. Dine in, dine out--can't go wrong. I definitely plan in returning when I'm back in town and in need of comfort foods.

Yelp
i was in town and had heard good things about this place so decided to place an online order to go. that was easy enough. two things made the experience challenging: parking around the restaurant is tough but i luckily got a 10min loading spot that made it somewhat easy to run over and grab it. the online order menu doesn't do a great job of showing photos of all the options nor do you know what ingredients are in individual dishes in case, like us, we had a person with dietary limitations. so i had ordered what i *thought* would be dairy free but just to be sure, when i walked in to pick up, i double checked and they asked the kitchen. turned out that the curried fried beef bao had both coconut milk and regular milk so then i had to pivot and figure out how to deal with an order that had already been placed and paid for. luckily, the server was amenable to me choosing something else and they make it while i waited. shout out to the woman working who went the extra mile to communicate with the kitchen to insure that whatever got made had to be dairy free. we ended up with vegetarian bao (heavy on spinach or some other kind of greens as well as tofu and/mushrooms,) shrimp and pork wontons and vegetarian fried rice with mushroom sauce. things were good but i found that i needed the hot chili oil to spice up the rice which i found to be rather bland. quantities were fine as well. the food was good but i'd be careful with people who might be limited to what they can eat and i'd also be aware that parking can be challenging.

Serena L.

Yelp
Their pork rib noodle soup has a nice homey flavor and is our go to meal. We like their baos as well. My boys like their fried rice.

Yelp
Good Bao Bao. I know where I'll be heading for all my Bao Bao needs. Good stuff. We were so full of the Bao.
google avatar

Patrick W.

Yelp
Solid, as a visitor coming through, stick with the bao zi buns... that's what they do best and it shows. The stir fry and beef noodle soup is a solid 'B' but to me is not something I'll want to keep coming back for. The bao zi however I would come back for.

Yelp
We were so happy to find this place on our way to Portland. My husband grew up in Springfield and they had nothing like this then! The restaurant is new. The staff is super friendly. The food was delicious. We've had lots of dumplings before and these were top notch. Best way to enjoy is with some soy sauce and the black vinegar. They have chili sauce if you like spicy.
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
Parking is difficult as the restaurant is located on a strange one corner. Nearby metered street parking is questionable with questionable people walking around. Food ~ Wontons with the right amount of hot chili oil, tender chicken in salad, dumplings came out steaming hot. Straightforward service ~ busy evening had the staff running around trying to keep up pace. Nice quick dinner with the exception of too many house flies inside.
google avatar

Ilona S.

Yelp
Food was amazingly delicious: the curry beef fried Bao Zi were deliciously spiced and beautifully soft on top, crispy on the bottom. Set of 6 for $12. We also split an order of Mapo Tofu: tofu cubes ins a spicy red chili pepper sauce. Served with rice. Delightful service and plenty of spaces to sit. It was quite busy for lunch today, they open at 12:00 and we were there just a couple minutes after 12:00 and it was already getting busy. Rightfully so! Parking was not a challenge today since it was free meter parking today, for some reason (?). The only point of improvement: it was super quite in there with no music in the background. It made me think I should whisper to my table mate.
google avatar

Makoto C.

Yelp
The service here is what really took me by surprise. We ordered to go and ended up eating it outside their restaurant and were promptly given bowls, water, and serving utensils. The food took a little while to come so we didn't want to wait any longer. This place has really good Yelp reviews for good measure. They are not greasy. They are not overly salty. It leaves you feeling light and satisfied. I would recommend this place. I was expecting Hawaiian style manapua's but they are different. It's more crunch the bao that is. It' also will squirt a lot of water on your shirt or jeans when you bite into it so be careful when you do.

Yelp
What's up: After grabbing a drink, we wanted to grab some food. In a mood for Chinese, we found this place after a quick Yelp search. This place is listed as popular for their yummy baos! Parking: Parking can be difficult to find. We saw a handful of metered street parking nearby. Environment: The place was busy when we arrived. We were down to our table and given menus to look through. The menus were cute and looked handmade. Restrooms are located towards the back and are clearly marked. Staff members were friendly and knowledgeable of the menu when we asked about the options. What was ordered: - Iced Fruit Tea (very refreshing, sweet medley of fruits) - Special Beef Noodles (it was alright, soup is very mellow) - Curry Beef Steamed Fried Bao Zi (a bit dry, needs more curry) - Shanghai Pork Steamed Fried Bao Zi (pretty good) Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. Overall, the food was good. The Iced Fruit Tea was delicious and super refreshing. Food flavors were pretty mellow but still tasty. The baos were not as deep fried as we were expecting but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Credit cards are accepted.

Yelp
We are sooooo impressed with this place! It's been a really long time since we left a restaurant raving about both the food and the service! Be sure to try the pan fried pork & shrimp wontons and the chicken/mushroom fried rice. Who knew that fried rice could be so flavorful? Yum!
google avatar

Kirsti P.

Yelp
I regret to admit I thought I didn't like dumplings prior to eating at Bao Bao House. I assumed they were similar to potstickers, and was missing out on the delicious dumplings and bao zi for years! Bao Bao House is my go-to for bringing family and friends. It's comfort food and I always leave SO happy, and full, and satisfied.
google avatar

Shasta G.

Yelp
The nest Bao I have ever had, the dumplings were excellent & wonton and shrimp fried rice. Friendly staff and great service. This restaurant takes pride in what they do. 10/10.
google avatar

Yelp
Random stop driving north on I-5 : other than the 15 minute wait - delicious! Great authentic Chinese food.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food with fast and friendly service! We were looking for a quick, inexpensive bite while traveling between Bandon and Portland and settled on this small, local restaurant. Everyone loved it!
google avatar

Lexi C.

Yelp
Bao bao, bao bao bao bao. Bao bao, bao!! Sorry, all I can think about is Bao after coming to eat here. It's so good and freshly made. Fast and very friendly service will make me recommend this place to anyone! Please do yourself a favor and come here! Highly recommend the shrimp and pork wontons IN THE SOUP! Delish. I want to try the pan fried version next time but the soup version was so good already.
google avatar

Yelp
Bao Bao House is the best comfort food in town. We normally just get the steam fried Bao, the curry one and the cheese and the pork one are our personal favorites! The service is amazing even tho we normally do takeout when we go into the restaurant they are incredibly accommodating. The Bao itself is so light and fluffy and the flavors are filled with incredible depth. The price is amazing for how much you get, worth it 100%. You know in anime movies when they bite into a bun and it looks so satisfying well these are those but in real life! Thank you to the staff for making my days so much better you're all incredible!
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
This was my fist time here and the food was so so good, portion sizes were great. I have enough noodles for lunch tomorrow as well. They were super quick to get us seated which is always great. And we're prompt with our order. The restaurant it's self is a little small but super cute i do wish they had music playing in the background to kinda separate our conversation from others. Over all a good experience.
google avatar

Yelp
We were so impressed, and my husband has travelled extensively in China several times. He says the bao is just as good!! And definitely some of the best he's had in the States. It has the right bread to meat ratio and wasn't just a big huge puffy ball of dough. We had the shrimp and pork bao. The wanton soups were also very good but the broth could have been a little more interesting. The shredded chicken with spicy pepper was delightful. The seaweed salad was authentic and fresh, no strange green dyes. The only disappointment was the mapo. We all agreed it was missing something and we think the cook might have forgotten the garlic and ginger. Just a guess as we make it at home, but maybe that's the recipe here? We weren't sure. It was the last dish out and very late to the table so maybe they were in a rush. It has some nice spice and maybe even an anise pod, but still underwhelming overall. But the service was perfect and we'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Conrad K.

Yelp
Service was quick and possibly the best we've had. Our waitress went above and beyond and even noticed our daughter's fingers could be pinched between the benches so she came back and taped the seam shut. The food was amazing. I ordered the Pan Fried Triple Delight Dumplings and Special Beef Fried Rice (HIGHLY RECOMMEND). My wife and kids ordered the Vegetarian Fried Bao Zi and Veggie Fried Rice w/ Mushroom Sauce. Everything was eaten and we will be returning soon!

Yelp
Bao Bao House is an absolute gem when it comes to delicious bao and so much more! Every time I visit, I'm greeted with a burst of flavor. The curry beef bao is my personal favorite, and it's truly a flavor explosion. But what's remarkable is that every bao on their menu is fantastic. Whether you go for the classics or try something more adventurous, you won't be disappointed. But it's not just about the bao; their noodle dishes are also a hit with my family. There's something for everyone, and the portions are generous. It's no surprise that we keep coming back for more. The staff is friendly, and the service is prompt, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. Bao Bao House is the go-to place when I'm craving authentic and mouthwatering Asian cuisine. It's a culinary journey I never want to miss.

Yelp
My friends and I were driving through Eugene and came in here with some high expectations based on reviews and left feeling pretty dissatisfied for a few reasons. Service: we didn't really feel attended to but instead like we continually had to call servers over to get anything ordered or to pay. Our food also came out in various order, with our appetizers also coming out after multiple entrees. What worked: the spicy cucumber, pork dumplings, fried rice and pork wonton soup were pretty good. Most needed a little chili oil but we all prefer our food on the spicy side The boa: honestly a little disappointing, the ratios felt off and there was too much liquid in our pork bao. The portion size for cost was nice though. The worst part: two of us ordered noodle soups (beef and pork). The meat was way under salted, and chew, needing to be doused in chili oil to avoid making it inedible. I guess there is a reason this is called bao bao house and not noodle house.
google avatar

GillianMay L.

Yelp
We came to Eugene to help a friend and was looking for something hot and warm to have for dinner on our first night. My husband found it on Yelp and we decided to give it a shot. We are glad we came and the food is Amazing! Everything we had was great especially the wonton in chili oil and the classic beef noodle soup. We also had the cucumber and the Shanghai fried Bao zi. Everything was fresh and tasted just right! Nothing was too salty or spicy! We came here again during our week in town and yes we would recommend this place! And it's definitely a plus that everyone was friendly and nice! . Parking could be an issue for some but both times we came we found street parking and it was free.
google avatar

Hooman H.

Yelp
I cannot even begin to describe just how good this place is. The best I can do is to keep it short and sweet. If you are in the Eugene area looking for authentic Chinese food, especially dumplings, wontons, or noodles, you have to come to this spot. Don't even think twice about it because you will never be disappointed. The wontons with chili oil? Melt in your mouth. The special beef noodles? Incredibly delicious. The pan-fried triple-threat dumplings? Indescribable. The Shanghai Dumplings? The best thing on the menu, and that's saying something. I cannot stress enough how much I would recommend this place to anyone looking for fantastic Chinese food at a great price.

Yelp
We had an excellent experience at this dumpling spot! We just beat the lunch rush, and the tables filled up quickly as did the waitlist--a great sign. We ordered the Japanese green tea and grapefruit fresh fruit tea; the fruit tea was actual chunks of grapefruit in hot water with sweetener, unexpected and delicious. The veggie fried rice was my favorite and it sort of mushroomy? So good! The crispy cucumbers were very different but tasty, and the vegetarian bao zi were good but did seem in need of a sauce maybe? Service was friendly and fast even though the restaurant was busy. Overall, a great experience. We'll be back.
