38 Essential Tacos to Try in Los Angeles

"From backyard barbacoa to a brick and mortar in Boyle Heights (and currently located in Baldwin Park), veteran barbacoa master Petra Zavaleta offers one of the most unique barbacoa styles in LA from her hometown of Tepeaca, Puebla. In addition to tender, flavorful lamb, and barbecued lamb skulls with eyes, tongue, and cheeks attached for making tacos with warming lamb consommé, there’s a rich, iron flavored lamb menudo called mole de panza enchilada." - Bill Esparza

LA’s Weekend Barbacoa Hustle Is Real - Eater LA

"When Zavaleta started her business in 2016, her son Delfino Rodríguez had the idea to split the word 'barbacoa' and combine it with 'kush,' the name of an indica strain of marijuana. 'For weed smokers, kush stands for quality,' says Rodríguez, who hoped the niche branding of Barba Kush would help get younger people interested in barbacoa. It worked — within three years of opening, Barba Kush had a brick-and-mortar in the quickly gentrifying Eastside neighborhood of Boyle Heights. The pandemic forced its closure a year later, but today you can still find Zavaleta, in her Baldwin Park backyard pop-up, serving mole de panza and tacos and quesadillas de barbacoa to a mixed crowd of hipsters, Latinos, and homesick Pueblans." - Bill Esparza

What a Great Mexican Breakfast Looks Like in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"When you arrive at Barba Kush there are no indications of the wonder that occurs inside this home. Cars are stationary along the entire street, birds are chirping, and dogs are being walked. But on Sunday mornings, Petra Zavaleta and her family host flocks of people in their backyard while constantly chopping away at lamb meat in their garage kitchen. There is something special about going to a place like this. In a backyard, next to the pits, strangers eat together on fold-out tables and plastic tablecloth in a scene that resembles a family reunion." - Trent Bozeman

This East LA Home Serves Amazing Regional Lamb Barbacoa and Menudo - Eater LA

"Barba Kush serves regional Pueblan-style lamb barbacoa on Sundays, but they’re looking to serve from a food truck. Petra Zavaleta has been preparing barbacoa and lamb menudo since she was 10 years old. The meal includes lamb barbacoa prepared in an earthen pit, served with quesadillas, a garbanzo bean-packed consomé, and pit-roasted lamb skulls. The star of the meal is a powerful bowl of lamb menudo whose hemic notes of liver with the intense flavors of stomach and chitterlings." - Bill Esparza

Great spot... glad I read the Eater LA articles about Barba Kush. This restaurant has been open less than a few weeks, but they used to have a house that they sold lamb barbacoa out of. Bill Esparza, I believe, is a Mexican food expert and has said this is one of the only if not the only barbacoa restaurant with the type of lamb they have. They pick up fresh lamb from a farm, so it’s of the utmost quality and freshness. It takes over 6 hours to cook... something we couldn’t do. And they don’t waste any part of the lamb. The tortillas are standout. Apparently they use two types of masa and mix them. Their quesadillas, tacos, and more are huge. Support this small family owned business! Family recipes, family staffed, authentic 3000!

I feel so bad for rating this place so low, but I am a big fan of barbacoa and I have to say that it was a huge disappointment. The meat is very dry, portions are super small, there are not good salsas, not even the salsa macha for the consomme. You get the best quality for your money at Rincón taurino and El Rey, these two places are really authentic

The tortillas are handmade Poblano style, VERY delicious and filling. Price point is great considering the amount given and the flavor of the food.

This was based on my experience getting the meat in the SGV. Got there right before opening. It's hard to find since the home is nestled behind a drive way, and there's no signs in the front. You'll wanna consider driving slow. Parking on the main street is limited when busy. Once inside, you'll find a table with the sign showing the price of the food. The husband greeted us. Very nice and polite. Sparked up a convo about how we heard about them. The younger son was also cool. Ordered a pound of lamb barbacoa, dozen tortillas, consomé and the head of the lamb. To-go only. Food took about 10 minutes to get. We ate on the hood of our car outside since we're out-of-towners. The meat was very greasy from the fat, but in a good way. The meat was very fresh. No seasoning besides salt. The tortillas were probably the best handmade tortillas I've had. Not because of the size, but because of how flavorful it was. Literally taste the masa and corn. Perfect in texture. The consomé tasted like an old school remedy your grandmother would make if you were sick. Everything combined made a great taco to eat. The tongue on the head was sooo flavorful. The meat of the brain and cheek were very good. Overall, if you're a fan of eating meat on its own it's absolutely worth the trip. You really taste the love the family put into this.

Omg I looove this place! Ive been eating here since the early days at the backyard on Sunday mornings. My favorite is hands down the consome. I can eat it everyday. It pairs well with a quesadilla de barbacoa, which did I mention is made from fresh handmade tortillas. Reminds me of going to visit my grandma in Mexico and waking up early to go to El Molino to get nixtamal to make tortillas. The salsas are spicy but tolerable. The aroma when you get there is like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. It is a great place to go with your family and friends and have a great experience in the friendly atmosphere. The service is awesome, they are very attentive and even give out samples if you are unsure of what to order. It is a must try if you are looking to have real traditional Mexican cuisine. 100%

Im so disappointed and really upset. I would go eat their barbacoa when they would sale it in their house. And today I was craving it so much so my husband when to buy some we live a few blocks away from the restaurant. He gets home and the barbacoa is so cold and the pieces they gave us were hard and dry. I call all the numbers they have to get a refund or more barbacoa but no one answered. I won't be back!!

Best place to eat !! I come here every Sunday because the food is excellent. . p.s they make handmade tortillas. My only advice is to arrive early because the food sells out fast.
