"If you only have one breakfast in Pittsburgh, it needs to be at Bitter Ends. This Bloomfield diner serves a vegetable-focused menu using produce grown in its own garden. The menu changes frequently - sometimes more than once a day - but staples like the veggie hoagie and chicken sandwich are always solid choices. Grab a mug of bottomless coffee and prepare to become someone who won’t stop talking about vegetables." - Madeline Quigley

"Grab a stool at the counter of this enthralling little mint-green gem — though at around 10 seats, it’s hard to score one at peak hours. Chef and co-owner — and James Beard “Rising Star” semifinalist — Becca Hegarty tends to a vegetable-centric menu of snacks like peach jam and goat cheese toast, griddled butterball potatoes, and more substantive orders like veggie hoagies with bread baked on site, slathered with cannellini bean puree and dressed vegetables. Come spring, look for produce from the restaurant’s garden." - Melissa McCart

Without a doubt this is by far one of the top restaurants that I have eaten at. It's not fancy, but it has a lot of charm and very very good food. It's very small and has the most attractive staff working there. They use the best available ingredients and even grow a lot of what they use. They have berm around for about 18 mounts. Whenever I'm in town I make sure to always eat here.

Google
Bitter Ends is arguably one of the best spots on the face of this green earth. The food is incredible, the donuts are sublime, the coffee is great, the people are the friendliest you'll ever find. There is so much good concentrated in that tiny little shop. I will go out of my way to visit here when I'm in Pittsburgh. Keep up the fabulous work you beautiful people.

BREAD Now that I have your attention, this place is wonderful. I love breakfast sandwiches, and this place is particularly top notch. The sausage patty is generously sized, and not too chewy. The bread is fresh (they are baking fresh loaves 6 feet away), a little sour for flavor, and not sliced too thickly. To top off the sandwich, the mesclun greens add a wonderful freshness to the sandwich. And of course the eggs are cooked to order. I’d prefer a slice of sharp cheddar too. While pricey and small, the food lives up and I’d love to return.

Google
This is such a cute place to eat! I really enjoyed my food. The only thing is this place is very small inside and with how popular it is, it can be hard to find a place to sit! I think that they should try to expand the place. The food is fresh ingredients and you can tell everything is very clean.

Google
Best bacon egg and cheese sandwich in Pittsburgh! Fast friendly service. Ryan the owner was super friendly. Love to support other small business and this guy / business/ is worth supporting.

Google
Bitter Ends Garden COULD HAVE BEEN a great first time experience but honestly, the counter girl who is the front of house staff has a very hairy chin. Although I love supporting local businesses, I could not stop thinking about her chin hair getting into my food. You should really think about having someone else represent the face of the restaurant.

Finally made it out to their Friday Fish Fry and was BLOWN AWAY. House made ciabatta bread, perfectly fried and seasoned fish on the perfect bed of greens. Looking forward to trying their brunch.

Google
This crew makes some of the tastiest brunch eats around the burgh. In the first bite, you can taste the layers of forethought and expertise that go into each sandwich, specialty toast, or bowl. They always greet you with a friendly hello and their foods/drinks are always a treat. Thankful to have them whipping it up in my neighborhood! 11/10 would recommend for people who appreciate good food.

Yelp
I was able to snag a couple of their sandwiches before they closed for the winter and it was definitely worth the 20 min wait in line and 20 min wait for food with the wind and rain coming down. The mushroom avocado was so good, it beat their meat option I would say. The vegetarians have a great option here. I can't wait to come back when they open back up!

Ellen K.

Yelp
After picking up some hot beverages at nearby Yinz Coffee to keep ourselves warm while waiting in line, we joined the line by 10:15 on a cool but sunny Sunday mid-October. By the time it was our turn to order, they were already out of one kind of sandwich. Their seasonal donut was a maple pecan and also had a lemon flavor and cinnamon flavored donut holes. I selected the Roasted Mushroom sandwich and the texture of the whole sandwich was perfect. For me, it was the light toasted poppyseed Kaiser roll that makes these breakfast sandwiches melt in your mouth delicious (vs say a bagel, biscuit, or toast). I am definitely willing to wait in line again for one of these breakfast sandwiches if in the Bloomfield neighborhood again.

Karen H.

Yelp
When you go down Liberty Ave in Bloomfield, you'll see a super long line queued up outside @thymemachinepgh when they're open until they sell out. Naturally I had to go see what all the fuss was about! I was anticipating a long wait in line but luckily it went pretty quickly. Their small menu consisted of six breakfast sandwiches, a few drink options, and donuts that were sadly sold out by the time I got there. I got the Cali Cam breakfast sandwich with bacon, griddled onion, cheddar, green goddess avocado, cherry pepper mayo, and a fried egg on top of a poppy seed bun ($10) along with an earl grey iced tea ($2.50). They have a couple of outdoor tables with seating and we managed to snag one so we could sit down and eat there. That sandwich was 100% worth the wait - it had amazing flavors that all went well together and it really hit the spot. They sold out about an hour or so before closing time so go early!

Leah L.

Yelp
Be prepared to stand in line for upwards of an hour. We waited for probably an hour and fifteen minutes, but when I tell you it was WORTH IT, I do mean just that. The service was efficient and the staff was kind. The food, man ... this was the literal best breakfast sandwich I've ever had in my life!!! The bacon was high quality, the cheese perfectly melted, the roll perfectly fluffy and the eggs are fried fresh. We tried one of everything on the menu. Highly recommend, don't let the line discourage you.

Maureen R.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped here because we saw a long line and were intrigued. We waited probably about 30-40 minutes and it was well worth the wait. It was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I have ever had. Unfortunately we devoured them before getting any photos. They packed a punch with flavor and the poppyseed bun was just outstanding. There are some tables setup outside to sit and eat, or you can take it to go. They pass out all sandwiches in a paper bag so it makes it easy. We can't wait to go back here and I promise to get photos this time!

Shiloh S.

Yelp
Waited in line for almost an hour and a half in the hot sun for these sandwiches but genuinely they were so so good I didn't even mind. We got the bacon egg and cheese and the roasted mushroom sandwich, an iced coffee, and 5 donut holes. The bacon egg and cheese is the one I'd go back for. It's savory it's sweet it's salty.. she really has it all. Soft warm roll, thick flavorful bacon, perfectly cooked egg with a jammy yolk, sweet caramelized onions, and the ketchup is the perfect sauce to round it out. The roasted mushroom was very good as well, but the BEC honestly stole the show. The donut holes were very chewy and delicious with a really nice addition of some salt in with the sugar. The sign said they were coconut lime but I'm pretty sure they were just sugared donut holes? Maybe? Either way I was happy to munch on them while we waited for our sammies. Iced coffee was also very good! I want to also comment on the folks working. It was genuinely a terribly hot day and they were all vibing hard and being so friendly and funny. I'm not a breakfast sandwich head by any means but maybe thyme machine converted me? There's not many foods I'd wait an hour for but I would gladly do it again here.

Amanda B.

Yelp
Really cool spot - I wish Pittsburgh had more breakfast pop ups! We went on a Saturday morning and luckily the line wasn't too crazy, plus they move through it pretty efficiently. We got two sandwiches (mushroom and mortadella) as well as donuts and a very refreshing ginger lemonade. The staff are super personable and overall we enjoyed our experience! The sandwiches were both good though the mushroom was definitely our favorite (the green goddess sauce is such a good idea), and the donuts were definitely enjoyed as well!

Julia B.

Yelp
I had heard great things about this pop up breakfast food truck style spot in Bloomfield from several people, and Thyme Machine did not disappoint! It's worth waiting in the inevitable line that they queue up due to their popularity, and the line moves pretty quickly. The breakfast sandwiches were SO good and super filling. The buns are toasted to order, and the eggs were perfectly cooked with melted cheese (provolone for me, American for Ben). I opted to try the mortadella sandwich which came with crispy mortadella, cherry pepper mayo for a little spice, and marinated peppers for some veg. Ben tried the classic BEC, and the spicy ketchup sauce served with it was delicious! In the future, I definitely want to get there earlier to try their broccolini breakfast sandwich (they ran out of broccolini that they source from a local farmer by the time we got there). To drink, I got the blueberry ginger lemonade - so good! Ben got the earl gray iced tea lemonade which was also refreshing. I'm already looking forward to this weekend so we can go back! I have a feeling we're going to be regulars. Food: A Drinks: A- Service: A- Ambiance: A-

Yelp
I am so glad that I lucked up and found this place. Be far one of the best breakfast sandwiches I have had. This is a well thought out simple and delicious menu. I had the egg and cheese because I don't eat pork and I am trying to find a way back before I leave town. Everything on it worked together. The service was super friendly. They opened at 8 and there was already a line forming. Do not come to Pittsburgh and miss this place. You will regret it.

Yasmine L.

Yelp
Food was amazing, stood in the cold and would do it all over again. Service was good it was a window restaurant and wait outside to order. They are a seasonal place wont up again until next year

Pearl T.

Yelp
Thyme machine turns the mundane mornings into delicious adventures. The line should not deter you but attract you. The bacon egg and cheese is definitely worth your thyme...time. If you come early enough, highly recommend the donut of the day--not like any other donut I've had before. Super bouncy. If you get it, you'll see what I mean. It's only outdoor seating, I'd recommend take out if it's hot out.

Peter N.

Yelp
You don't need me to tell you how delicious Thyme Machine is. Just try it for yourself and you will be hooked. This little food cart has been going strong for a while now, and for very good reason. Their food is outstanding, with their delicious buns and inventive spins on your regular egg breakfast sandwich. Try the Mushroom Egg and Cheese or the Bro, and you'll see why they're always packed with customers. They are small but speedy and the wait is always worth it. Try some of the donuts too if you need something sweet after your sandwich.

Yvette L.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast sandwiches...bread was toasted and eggs were made to order. I didn't have to wait in line to order but the short wait to receive food was worth it. They had a few tables for eating/ waiting. Pretty nice setup.

Alicia O.

Yelp
I am not from Pittsburgh so I didn't realize their breakfast stand is OUTSIDE. I walked right past this morning looking for a brick and mortar. So when you pull up, they are under the tent outside by the sidewalk. On to the food- DOPE! It hit the savory spot i love to quench in the morning. Please do yourself a favor and exit out the Einstein Bagel parking lot bc those sandwiches are NOT it. Drive down a few more blocks to this place. My bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich was perfect. The only thing I would change is to make it bigger bc whewwww its so good! I wanted like 3 more bites. I also couldn't tell if there were drinks. Maybe a pre-made fruity something would be nice to add to the menu? I actually didn't even check so I could be wrong. Lastly, I'll be back next week for, yes, another breakfast sandwich and this time I'll try the donuts too. Well done, friends!

Karla D.

Yelp
Hands down one of my most fave neighborhood spots. They filled the void when Bitter Ends left. Food is always fresh and just amazing. I love the heirloom tomato and fried egg breakfast sandwich. I could seriously eat here daily.

Eryn P.

Yelp
I want to write a love story about the thyme machine. I've been here once because Bloomfield is not my stomping ground, but I feel like the short jaunt up the hill would be worth it on the weekend. Everything I got was incredible. I don't even remember what It was, I just kept saying *mouth full* omy gawd. Can't wait till they get their little place up and running and can get out of their little food cart, however, the food cart vibe is so fun. So rare to see here in Pittsburgh. Go. Get all the sandwiches. And a donut. Thank me later. Happy Eating!

Matt G.

Yelp
Without a doubt the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had in my life. I ordered the bacon, egg, and cheese, and my fiancé ordered the Fried Mortadella. The bun, egg, bacon, and onions were all cooked perfectly, and that spicy ketchup was to die for. We also ordered a donut and donut holes, and those were fantastic. Incredible chocolate frosting on the donut (we ate every sprinkle). To add to the experience, the shop was a cute pop up and the staff were really nice. I'm going to try to return every week.

Geraldine U.

Yelp
Stopped by here for some breakfast on-the-go before going to the zoo and I am really glad we did. The sandwiches are delicious and filling. Their poppy seed kaisers are tasty on their own. We got the bacon egg and cheese and fried mortadella sandwiches which were both super flavorful. The bacon was thick and crispy. The mortadella one was packed with layers of flavor. Both had a perfectly runny egg. We were also lucky enough to get the last donut (which was around 10 am on a Thursday!), so make sure to get there earlier than us to secure your tasty treat. The donut is more on the cakes side but otherwise light and airy yet with a slight crisp on the outside.

Yiying X.

Yelp
After the farewell of BitterEnds, Thyme Machine has taken over the location and keeps the party going in Bloomfield - they have the best breakfast sandwiches!! I got the broccolini/egg/cheese sandwich the bun is grilled with their cherry pepper mayo, plus griddled onion and, beyond delicious!! Definitely going back to try the other ones, highly recommend it to you all

Chris K.

Yelp
Best Breakfast Sándwiches in Pittsburgh- Hands down this is the best thing I can ever remember. Always remember the taste of the hot sandwich deep in my mouth, with the flavors so good, and the service so quick and the people so nice! That I realized I lived close so I walk here every day of the weekend. The streets are full and the food is hot and there's seating, and I met some friends. And we all ate sandwiches together! Together! And I got, some donuts to go.. some donuts to go... :)

Kayla L.

Yelp
It was the perfect ending to our weekend at Pittsburgh. The best breakfast sandwich I have ever had in my life and those donuts oh my God.

J G.

Yelp
Killer breakfast sammies served with a very 'burgh vibe. The line forms early and gets long on weekends but it's friendly (and dog friendly). Seating is minimal (with warnings not to block the neighbors) so go early and grab your "Beckies" to take home. Oh-- one note, others in the line strongly recommended the donuts, and we did get them (sorry no pic) but for my calories... I'd stick with the incredible sandwiches.

Kristy A.

Yelp
They make a really good breakfast sandwich. I could not decide, so I ordered both the mortadella and the bacon, egg, and cheese. I sat on a step nearby and ate half of each. They were sort of messy and no utensils are provided, but both were delicious. I took the remains home for the next day. A minute in the microwave plus a knife and fork, round two was good as well. But...that line. Whomp whomp. I absolutely hate a line and would usually skip it entirely because of that, but I was hungry and it mild and cloudy out. No way I'd have stood there for the 35 minutes if it had been hot and sunny. Once I ordered, it took 10 minutes to get my sandwiches. The couple of tables were full, so I posted up on the step of a restaurant that hadn't opened yet. All around, not really ideal and I'd be unlikely to make it a regular thing because of that. It also opens a little late for me.

Roxy M.

Yelp
It took 30 minutes from getting in line to getting my food. The cashier smiled at all the customers and was friendly. There are 4 employees and they work hard! I got the bacon egg and cheese sandwich. It was awesome. The bacon was thick cut and it was full of it. I also tried their mixed berry ginger lemonade. It was great. We also had donut holes. They were ok. The workers were friendly and it was worth the wait! We are visiting in town and nothing is far from where we are in Oakland. Everything is 15 min max away.

Tabitha W.

Yelp
It's been a long thyme since I've had THIS GOOD of a breakfast sandwich. A perfect Saturday morning treat, the made-to-order sandwiches were rich, perfectly seasoned and absolutely incredible. They were a little messy to eat so if you have longer hair, grab your claw clip before you head on over.

Danielle D.

Yelp
I love the breakfast sandwiches here. I've gone twice. One time, I did have tow ait about 20 minutes in line despite getting there before they opened on a Thursday at 8am. Today, I went around 10am on a Thursday and no line at all. I went because they posted in Instagram about having pork roll, and I was excited to get to enjoy some in Pittsburgh. I got the Jersey Girl sandwich consisting of pork roll, egg, spicy ketchup, grilled onions. The sandwiches are a decent size and pretty filling. I'd recommend coming here for a great breakfast sandwich to either bring home or enjoy at one of yhe small tables nearby. Try to go a bit after they open on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

Paige D.

Yelp
If you have time to spare the 30+ minute line is definitely worth it. I'm hoping they are moving in to a permanent space soon because I'm not sure if I can brave the wait in the winter. The food is definitely 5 stars. Ordered the sandwich with mortadella and the green goddess sandwich (I think it was called). The buns are amazing and I could eat just those. Also ordered a coconut donut and it was very good. Not overly sweet and a great texture! Please please just move in to a permanent space!

Mike M.

Yelp
Worth the 30 minute sidewalk line for sure. Came here thinking it was a brick and mortar restaurant but saw it was a pop up tent on the street. Pretty efficient looking setup with 2 folks preparing the sandwiches and one taking the order. The sandwich was phenomenal. Also was wowed by the $3 mulled apple cider...one of the more flavorful beverages I have ever had with an amazing spice blend. I will surely be back to try the Italian beef next!

Sarah N.

Yelp
This is a top 3 breakfast sandwich in PGH!!! I got the basic bacon egg and cheese and WOW! It's located right out side the bitter end as a pop up! They take card and cash and have a little seating area! I popped in to yinZ coffee as well to grab a drink after since it's just across the street! Will be adding this to a quick weekend rotation!

Joshua J.

Yelp
Thyme machine is a fun little stand on the side of the road where you stand in long lines in the sweltering heat in the middle of a sidewalk for a breakfast sandwich that couldn't possibly live up to the hype. Yet somehow, taking my first bite of that tommy, it totally did. Great food, great flavors, fine ambiance. Both my bacon egg and cheese and tommy felt familiar yet also fresh and flavorful.

Rachel T.

Yelp
These are the BEST breakfast sandwiches AND donuts in Pittsburgh! We are obsessed. I reviewed them before on the Bitter Ends page, but now Thyme Machine is taking over the Bitter Ends storefront. They are no longer just a pop up! We are so happy about this!! Until they move in the storefront, they have their cart outside the cafe Thursdays-Sundays. The menu changes weekly depending what's fresh and in season. My recent favorite has been the Roasted mushroom, cheddar, and avocado mash (roasted portobellos, green goddess avocados, cheddar, cherry pepper mayo, fried egg, on a poppy seed kaiser). They make all of the sandwiches from scratch, including the buns. They are the perfect size and the different sauces/salsas really make the sandwich. My boyfriend loves the bacon, egg, and cheese which has griddled onions and spicy ketchup on it too. This past time he tried the fried mortadella, egg, and cheese. It was HUGE and he really enjoyed it. The only problem was that it was way too messy. The whole sandwich fell apart and had to be cut up. We ate these sandwiches 2 days in a row!! Obsessed. These are also my favorite donuts in the city. The recent lemon one is a new favorite. The texture is light and fluffy, even though these are some thick donuts! They are sweet and savory, and we can't get enough of them. I highly recommend stopping on a Thursday if possible, because they are very busy over the weekend (especially before/after the Bloomfield Saturday Market).

Courtney F.

Yelp
Amazing. Delicious. Nailed the perfect breakfast sandwich. Homemade onion roll, crispy bacon, carmelized onions, pure perfection. And not expensive. Paid under $8 for a sandwich and coffee pre-tip. Not many tables outside unfortunately so had to take to go but maybe they will add more seating soon. Would definitely go back! They also had homemade donuts and donut holes which I will plan to try next time!

Mike R.

Yelp
Holy smokes. There is a reason for the line. Perfect breakfast sandos. Unctuous, warm, fresh and delicious all around. The roll is a standout and is soft and light and perfect to hold together whatever they put inside. Finish with one of the incredible donuts (you want this) and then enjoy your nap.

Rob P.

Yelp
Great food way slow waiting... it shouldn't take an hour to get a breakfast sandwich. Wise County is twice as fast and just as good !

Ahmed A.

Yelp
Egg and cheese was so good. I wish I ordered two Breakfast Sandwich Coffee was ok. Love the donut It is a place you should try

Joe H.

Yelp
Well that was delicious. Those doughnuts are sneaky goodies Bacon, egg and cheese for the win

Erin A.

Yelp
Thyme Machine is fantastic every time. All of the sandwiches are good - you really can't go wrong with whichever you choose. My only complaint is that I want more! If they had the option to order any sandwich as a double I would totally pay more for that.

Nathan M.

Yelp
We got the bacon egg and cheese and it was phenomenal this hands down top 3 breakfast Sammy spot in Pittsburgh. The overall service was great once we ordered the food came out quick. Only reason I would not give 5 stars is probably not going to wait in line for 30-40 minutes for a sandwich but understand the concept just not going to become a go to. Not much ambiance other than people watching on the sidewalk.

Jessica R.

Yelp
i've always wanted to try it here but never made the time to wait in line. my first visit i waited 40 minutes and it was worth every second. their operation is very efficient and everyone working was friendly. sandwich was incredible, i ate it so fast. i can't wait to come back!

Meghan T.

Yelp
Scored a delicious breakfast sandwich this morning: Roasted mushrooms, egg, cheese, with a house made green goddess dressing on a poppyseed bun. The flavors were phenomenal and it was gone before I could even think about taking a picture. Highly recommend this sidewalk 'cafe'.

Kate S.

Yelp
I'm not sure how I originally found this place but I'm SO glad I did. Now most of my weekends include at least one stop at Thyme Machine. I'm usually pretty wordy but in this case I really only have two things to note: 1). THE BEST BREAKFAST SANDWICHES. 2). Really kind people working there. I'm a vegetarian and love that they have creative veggie options. And their homemade rolls are just mind blowing. I've gotten donuts twice - one I loved, the other was so-so for me. Which just means I'll keep having to try more! I was waiting in line one day and someone drove by and yelled "Best breakfast sandwiches in the world". Yup, you're right, dude.

DJ J.

Yelp
Stopped by to grab a breakfast sandwich. They are still out front of this location. Was told they plan to move in to the location soon. Will be interested to see how the menu evolves when they are in the building. The fried mortadella with egg and cheese has a cherry pepper mayo and marinated peppers on a poppy seed kaiser roll was tasty with a little zip from the peppers. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Kate C.

Yelp
BEST BREAKFAST SANDWICH IN THE CITY! And trust me, I've tried them all. Get there early or expect to wait in line (moves fairly quickly). Everything is delicious, but my personal fav is the roasted mushroom, cheddar, avocado mash.

Salvatore P.

Yelp
Hands down the best breakfast sandwiches on earth. My brother got the mortadella one. And I got the peach jam one(pictured) both are spectacular. The donuts are amazing too-- when there's a line 20 people deep for a breakfast sandwich, there is a reason

Austin T.

Yelp
Best breakfast sandwich in Pittsburgh. Thick bacon, perfect buns, grilled onions with egg and cheese. Will be back.

Alex H.

Yelp
Some quotes from my wife and I while trying this for the first time - "Holy shit it's good" "10/10" and "unbelievably good" Wow. We're going to make this a weekend tradition.

Jdot S.

Yelp
The best breakfast sandwich in Pittsburgh. My mouth waters thinking of them. Dem buns, I could eat those all day long, so soft and perfect density. Yum!

Edward M.

Yelp
Ryan and Jay are so nice and serve up some fantastic food! The bacon, egg, and cheese was the perfect start to a beautiful Saturday morning.

Shaar Y.

Yelp
Fantastic breakfast sandwiches! Got the mushroom avocado egg sandwich plus a fried Mortadella sandwich. Both amazing. Always a line - friendly and chill staffs. The peach lemonade was a refreshing start of the day. Went back the next day for their seasonal peach crumbles pie. The fresh produce store worker told me that they got the peach from them. Fresh material + solid food + great vibe!! Definitely the best breakfast experience we had in Pittsburgh!
