Best Restaurants in Philadelphia for Affordable Food | Eater Philly

"Tuck into juicy slabs of rotisserie chicken, crispy empanadas, blazing hot wings, and more from this Peruvian favorite on South Street. There’s a full menu to order from, but whatever you do, don’t miss that chicken: It’s brined for two days, marinated in vinegar, chili, and garlic, and then roasted over a spit, and it is fantastic." - Eater Staff

Brazas BBQ Chicken - Review - South Street - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Brazas BBQ Chicken on South Street has a very particular scene: Peruvian art and handmade jewelry line the store up front, friends add a glass of sweet chicha morada to their order at counter, and smoky chicken has a home on every table. The friendly spot should be at the top of your list when it comes to Peruvian food in Philly. There's great pollo saltado and puffy, super-packed chicken empanadas with pepper sauce. But it's the BBQ chicken that makes us stop mid sentence. It's brined and marinated in soy, garlic, lime, cilantro, and sweet aji amarillo paste, and then slow-smoked. And the result of this herby, sweet deep tissue massage is a bird is beautifully tender, incredibly flavorful bird. Grab some sides like beans and rice or creamy street corn solo or with someone you like enough to split a chicken that you secretly want to hoard. photo credit: NICOLE GUGLIELMO photo credit: NICOLE GUGLIELMO photo credit: NICOLE GUGLIELMO photo credit: NICOLE GUGLIELMO photo credit: NICOLE GUGLIELMO" - Candis R. The Tastiest Latin Restaurants in Philly | Eater Philly

"A new spot on the scene, Brazas BBQ Chicken has garnered an emerging fanbase for their Peruvian-style cuisine. Their juicy chicken is impeccable, but don’t ignore their tasty Lomo Saltado (hanger steak stir fry, onions, tomatoes, french fries, white rice) and Tallarin Verde (creamy Peruvian basil spaghetti, grilled chicken cutlet)." - Ernest Owens

Let me start off by saying that this is one of the best restaurants a person can go too. This truly is my safe place and reminds me of what having a family was like! The menu setup is amazing where you order family meal style and everyone shares portions of the meal and it’s so dang delicious! The chicken is to die for and the sides are absolutely ridiculous. You really cannot go wrong with anything you get here and the price is so amazing! If you are ever considering this place do yourself a favor and just go:)

This is for the food truck. Lady who serve us was lovely, sweet, and kind. Only stopped to get empanadas and a drink. The empanadas were flavorful and huge! They were not stingy with the sauce either. Next time, we'll visit the actual restaurant. They weren't opened until noon the next day and we were already leaving town before then.

Google
The food was absolutely delicious. Chicken was seasoned and the yuca and potato fries were excellent. They only get four stars because there seems to be an error on their online menu. The menu on Google says that the Whole Brazas Bird Meal has corn bread but the lady informed us that they did not include it when we went to pick it up. That plus after we made a call, we arrived fifteen minutes later and she told us that they hadn't started on our order. Granted it was almost closing time so I understand the hesitation to start a new order so close to closing time. Food was great though.

A neighbor posted about a new Peruvian restaurant with delicious food and wonderful service, so I got some friends together to try it out: so glad that we did! Carmen was a wonderful host and took us through the menu. As usual, we wanted to try as much as possible, so we ordered two half chickens* (which came with all the sauces and two garden salads), two Brazas Empanadas (Aji de Gallina - pulled chicken, Peruvian pepper, cheese sauce), Yuquitas a al Huancaina (crispy yuca and Huancaina dipping sauce), Chaufa (Peruvian fried rice), Maduros (sweet plantains), Macaroni a la Huancaina, and Chicha Morada (Peruvian purple corn drink) and Pineapple Jugo Fresco all around. The Brazas Empanadas are original to the chef at Brazas, and, as Carmen suggested, best eaten immediately so they're piping hot and the cheese is gooey! Everything was perfectly cooked: the chicken was tender and well-seasoned, the Yuquitas were extra crispy, and the Maduros were sweet and slightly crispy. Both the Chaufa and the Macaroni a la Huancaina were spins on what your taste buds might expect from fried rice or macaroni--note, the macaroni was more of a macaroni salad than a mac'n'cheese. And the salad was refreshing--especially when mixed with the Peruvian Olive Mayo dipping sauce! Speaking of dipping sauces, my favorite was the Brazas Green Sauce (Medium). Second favorite was the Brazas Rocoto Red Sauce (Hot). The other sauces were also tasty, but I just couldn't stay away from the Brazas Green Sauce, which went well with the Chicha Morada, which wasn't overly sweet, and was certainly a deep purple color. We capped off the meal with an order of Tres Leches and an order of Flan--both were yummy. Brazas has plenty of seating for parties of various sizes, and was fulfilling quite a lot of takeout orders, but the chef brought some dishes out himself and Carmen checked in on us periodically. Will definitely return! *It was so tasty, that some in our party wound up placing another order to bring home to the rest of her family!

Google
Peruvian food is in my top two favorite cuisines. We ordered on DoorDash for pickup and the food was ready in the estimated time, quick pickup with an empty restaurant at 1130am Saturday. I found the man to be quick and helpful in coming out to greet me. Brazas empanada $5.75 - really expensive for just one. In the picture on DoorDash it has 2 empanadas so I thought we were getting 2. The flavor was good especially with the sauces. Probably wouldn’t get here again though. Peruvian fried rice $7.20 - good portions definitely different fried rice than I ever tasted. Not used to this flavor, not bad not great, decent. And I’ve had so many arroz chaufas in my life. Would finish eating, but wouldn’t get again. Cuarto - pollo a la brasa with sweet plantains $13.80 portions were small and white chicken unfortunately was extremely dry, lacked any moisture in the chicken. It’s the moist disappointing part because Peruvian chicken is SUPPOSED to be some of the most moist you will ever eat. This chicken lacked that, I found it really difficult to finish but I kept at it. The flavor was only in the skin very salty and peppery. White meat doesn’t need to be dry and that’s why I find this to be no excuse especially for charging $13.80 for 1/4 of a piece of chicken. Portions for this were just sad if you look at the picture. The plantain was good just the way it’s supposed to be. Pineapple Fresca - $6.90 good not the best but good. We wished there was more natural juices available. Polli-papas - $11.50 chicken and fries were just okay it really wasn’t anything special. Refer to picture, it tastes exactly how it it looks. The chimmichuri sauce, brazas red sauce, white sauce, and brazas green sauce were all really great it was the best part of the meal. The second would be the plantains and the juice, but unfortunately the main dishes were extremely disappointing. Parking is metered on south street. We’re avid food eaters and are disappointed we couldn’t add this to our list. For a total of $48.50 the meal was just not worth it. 2.5/5 unfortunately leaning towards 2 because the main dishes didn’t live up to Peruvian standards.

Great food, authentic Peruvian taste and amazing service! We got the Lomo Saltado (steak stir fry) and the Half Chicken with Chaufa rice - both were absolutely delicious and the same taste as we had in Cuzco and Arequipa. They serve Inca Cola and Chicha Morada (purple corn drink) too if you want to try a new beverage. Great place, glad to find this hidden gem on South Street - wish they add Ceviche to the menu soon

Casting about for something a little less carb forward to take care of my take-out dinner needs and I remembered, Brazas BBQ Chicken! Got a quarter chicken combo with came with a little side salad and I chose the quinoa. Chicken was EXCELLENT. Green salsa is delicious. Quinoa salad will bring me back. Thank you!

Google
I had the 1/2 chicken with the chaufa rice. Delicious and juicy! Just like the Peruvian rotisserie I grew up eating in Miami. The sauces (ajis) were yummy. I will be back! Welcome to the neighborhood! Prices were reasonable for the amount of food provided.

Yelp
The chicken is good but the sauces make it great. I loved their empanada too. The service was great too. There was a very nice woman who was very attentive. The decor is minimal and bare.

Yelp
So good! Seems like a hidden gem even though it is on a very busy South Street block ......for now. They do tasty & juicy chicken. Reasonably priced! Very generous servings. You will not leave hungry. We ate in BYOB. Service was fast & personable. They seem to have a lot of takeout business . They did not disappoint. My husband went back the next night for dinner he liked it so much. He went back for a full chicken order instead of the 1/2 chicken we got the night before & he ate it all!

Yelp
I ordered thru GrubHub and my driver decided to drop my order outside in the cold. I couldn't find my food for 20 minutes. When I finally found it I was worried it would impact the food. Thank goodness it didn't! The chicken was super flavorful. I got the dark meat quarter chicken meal. For my side I got the fried rice which was seasoned well. I got the green and red sauces- I loved them mixed together. I also got an extra side of plantains - cooked to perfection. I am Filipino and so much of this meal reminded me of comforting Filipino food (except for the spice kick, which was welcome). Will definitely order from here again!

Yelp
Pretty clean and affordable. Girl who works there is really nice. Food comes out reasonably fast. White sauce is so good and Peruvian fried rice goes really well with the chicken. Next time would not get the yuca fries because it's just not my thing, glad I tried it.

Yelp
I have ordered delivery from this place twice and it is amazing. The food arrives hot and fresh and the quality is fantastic. I can't stop thinking about the plantains which had that perfect caramelized sweetness. The chicken was moist and well seasoned, and I am obsessed with the olive mayo. Great flavor on the black beans too. In addition, even with the extra fees from Uber eats, the price was very reasonable. I have to go by there in person at some point to see how accessible it is for disabled folks, because it was good enough that I want to bring my mother and stepfather! Definitely order from them again no matter what. Please don't change a thing, Brazas!

Yelp
Open for a few months, fairly new Peruvian Rotisserie Chicken joint! Friendly service, fair prices, delicious food make this new spot very welcomed on South Street. Got to try the pasta and chicken cutlet meal along with the half rotisserie chicken with yucca fries. The different homemade sauces take everything up a notch. Come try this place out!

Yelp
to start, i was quite surprised at the space inside! plenty of tables, very well decorated, and they seem very honored to be serving their food. the quarter white meat chicken combo with side salad and off the cob street corn was very refreshing and the chicken was season perfectly. i will say the corn was a bit oily, so i didn't eat too much knowing i had to do some walking afterwards, but it was very crisp and flavorful. many drink options, but went with a classic option. highly recommend this place, and hope to come back next time i'm down this way!

Zoe S.

Yelp
Seriously nothing bad to say about this place, service was amazing and the food was so so so good, I can't wait to return for another plate soon! Went with my bestie and ordered the half chicken combo and some extra sides (street corn, yuca fries, maduros) and everything was so so amazing, including sauces which were out of this world. I would definitely recommend this spot to anyone, everything was so so good!

Malcolm M.

Yelp
Delicious chicken and plantains; server was very helpful and didn't rush us. Inside decor OK; BYOB, but no ice available to cool drinks or wine. Would definitely go back - well priced and very tasty chicken. Go and enjoy the food.

Yelp
Ordered Take Out yesterday and it was FANTASTIC! We had some friends over for dinner and we've all been meaning to try Brazas and we were quite impressed. We ordered a whole chicken which was seasoned perfectly!! This came with salad, 2 sides and 3 sauces. Mind you were sauce people and we ordered extras of all the sauce and they are delicious!!! Oh, and their wings, let me tell you were GREAT. Super tender and the sauce was delicious. Paired well with the white sauce. Also ordered the Yuca fries and the Salchi papas (fries with cut up sausage). Very good and flavorful. Lastly, on their website I saw you could order Aguadito De Pollo soup, which is one of my personal favorites. I make it at home sometimes and this was soooooo good. Surprised it's on featured on their print out take out menu. But either way, so worth it! Totally recommend to try this place! We were so happy to support a new local business. Everyone there was VERY VERY friendly and the inside is beautiful! P.S. we were so hungry, so we didn't get a chance to take pictures. We dived right in

Yelp
Really good food, friendly service and nice atmosphere. Portions were generous and prices reasonable. Restaurant was really clean, too.

Nina M.

Yelp
fantastic food! the dark meat is so flavorful (if you don't like your food very salty i'd recommend the white meat). the beans could use a little salt. the maduros were cooked perfectly and this is the only place you get a good portion of them! i had the green sauce and the red sauce (both spicy & delicious!). the green sauce really brightens the meal up. this place is (sadly) never packed, they deserve the business. oh and free BYOB! no corking fee. the salad comes with what looks like a dairy sauce so ask for no sauce if you're dairy free. also they don't sell tres leches anymore. nice polite servers.

Yelp
First time trying this place so ordered it through DoorDash. Came within 30 minutes and boy was the chicken hot (temperature). Typically with delivery services, the come to you cold....this was the complete opposite. The chicken felt like it was just cooked and very hot, which is great. You know those supermarket rotisserie chickens? Well this is the complete opposite, much more flavorful and hella juicy, I mean helllllllla juicy. Not dry whatsoever. Big juicy pieces that when you dip into that green sauce, you just wana pass out from the flavor. I will be ordering from here again 100%, especially not being fried...helps me lose some of that quarantine weight and keep the protein up. Recommend this place guys, and ask for extra green sauce....it's crack Btw the picture is missing a breast/leg and a sauce....I got too hungry and took the pic after

Dee C.

Yelp
Outstanding chicken, vegetables, plantains, and sercvice. Not too noisy. A neighborhood gem.

Tanya W.

Yelp
I was looking at a place down South Street to grab some food because I had some business I was doing. Went to Fat Tuesdays for a beer, and my hubby had a few drinks. We went across the street but didn't stay, since no one was acting like they wanted our business, so we headed down the street, found this place, so we went in. At first, I was skeptical because the lady working in there was kinda slow, but I am so glad we stayed. The food was EXCELLENT!!! I ordered quarter chicken with plantains, and it came with a salad. My husband ordered the whole chicken plus fried rice and French fries. He really enjoyed it. I didn't take pics but will definitely be returning for more. I will try to take cash, they do tell you it's a little more if using cards.
google avatar

Yelp
Brazas is banging! This is what I call a 5 star experience. The chicken and rice was seasoned well. The sauce selection is great. The service was on point and the atmosphere was chill.

Oscar W.

Yelp
Amazing chicken and empanadas. Great place to try around south street. Very friendly staff, will be going back soon!
google avatar

Gary A.

Yelp
I got an anticucho kebab combo to go with a side of vegetables with garlic and almond and green sauce. The chicken was grilled to perfection, succulent and flavorful. The veggies consisted of green beans and carrot slices and were also perfectly prepared with their crunch fully preserved. My only issues were that the green sauce was nowhere to be seen and the combo was supposed to come with a green salad but most curiously did not. Why not? A to-go order that likely wouldn't be checked until the package was opened at home?

Yelp
i'm from los angeles, which has a lot of great Peruvian food, and one of the things i was sad to leave behind in LA was Pollo ala Brasa, famous for its Peruvian wood-fired chicken. imagine my surprise (and delight!) when i discovered Brazas just a few minutes away on South St. i finally had a chance to try it today, and it was everything i hoped it would be. if you've never had Peruvian wood-fired chicken, it's profanely delicious. The meat is incredibly succulent and the skin is deeply lacquered and flavored from the self-basting rotisserie. it's usually served with a spicy green sauce that has quite a kick. we ordered the whole chicken with two sides and it did not disappoint. it came with a variety of dipping sauces, but the classic green sauce is still my favorite. our two sides (rice + beans, sauteed green beans + carrots) were generously sized and also very delicious. there was a lot of food, so we ate half and brought the rest home. here's the best part: the whole chicken (one WHOLE chicken!!) with two sides was only $29. that is an epic value. and the place is BYOB, so bring a friend or date. where else can you get a very nice dinner (or lunch) for two that's only $30?

Yelp
If you're looking for a fantastic Peruvian restaurant in Philadelphia, I highly recommend checking out Brazas BBQ chicken. This restaurant offers a menu full of authentic Peruvian dishes that are sure to delight your taste buds. The rotisserie chicken is one of their specialties, and it's perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. Couple of their standout side dishes is the street corn choclito, which is simply irresistible. The chaufa rice and yuca fries are also excellent that you won't want to miss. On top of the mouth-watering food, the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Whether you're in the mood for a quick bite or a full meal, Brazas BBQ is the perfect spot to indulge in authentic Peruvian cuisine.

Bob S.

Yelp
I finally got around to trying Brazas today even though I only live a few blocks away. I'm so glad I did! I placed the order on line at 12:54 and got a time of 1:13 when it would be ready. I walked in at 1:13 on the dot and there it was. I got a quarter chicken (dark meat, my favorite). It was really succulent and delicious, some of the best chicken I've had in Philly. I loved the Peruvian fried rice I ordered as a side and the green sauce I chose was wonderful - plenty of cilantro and just enough heat. Even the salad that came with it was special- no iceberg lettuce and pale tomatoes. Good job, Brazas!

Steve B.

Yelp
Excellent new Peruvian rotisserie chicken restaurant! We had a group, so we ordered two whole chickens, the pulled chicken empanadas, and a bunch of sides: rice and beans, street corn, and potato salad, and yuquita fries, and for dessert: flan and tres leches. Everything was fresh and tasty! Staff are very friendly, too. They did just open a month ago, so they're a bit under-staffed. But we hope they stay!

Yelp
I lived in Peru for a few years and am always looking for some gorgeous authentic food. I appreciate this place because they highlight some of the under the radar, but just as delicious, Peruvian staples like pollo a la brasa, tallarín verde, and papa a huanacaina. Most impressive were the perfect sauces- go ahead and order them all. Everything we ordered was perfect. This food is carefully prepared. The service is excellent. It may take some time to make, but ignore the Karens, this food is worth the wait.
google avatar

Namita G.

Yelp
Wow!! So glad we stumbled upon this gem ! The most amazingly seasoned chicken I've had and the accompaniments are perfect !
google avatar

Cisco W.

Yelp
I don't think there are many pollo a la brasa restaurants in Philly so I'm glad Brazas opened up! This place is awesome. They weren't fully renovated when we came here to eat but the food and service was outstanding. We tried pollo a la brasa, rice and beans (Peruvian style rice), sweet plantains, ají de gallina empanadas and yuca. The food was amazing and the sauces were exquisite. This food in this place truly took me back to Peru. Will visit again soon!

Forrest R.

Yelp
Some of the best Peruvian-style chicken I've had recently and so happy to find a place nearby that has aguadito de pollo on the menu. 100% an addition to the Philly food scene I was excited to see. Their sauces are DELICIOUS; don't miss the olive mayo if you haven't had it before but all the options are great. The staff working were so friendly and nice when I came in to pick up my online order. Definitely a great place to go for solid food, can't wait to eat there again Edit: I forgot to mention the wings are fall-off-the-bone tender. Legit.

Emily P.

Yelp
We've tried almost everything on the menu and it's all delicious! And can't beat the prices! If you're on south street or in Queen Village you should definitely check it out.

Suzanne D.

Yelp
If you haven't tried this place - it's a must! If you have tried it - go again and keep going. lol It's our go to for catering. The chicken is incredible. As are the plantains, street corn, yucca , beans. I can not rave enough about the ceviche. Such amazing flavors. They make ordering super easy and the staff is super accommodating and friendly.

Breezy B.

Yelp
Great food, gracious owner and staff. Just go already! Delicious! In a few months you will probably have trouble getting in

David C.

Yelp
This is the best bbq chicken I've found in Philadelphia. Definitely worth trying out. Always quick and helpful service.

Kyle M.

Yelp
My only regret is I didn't try Brazas sooner. The full chicken was a 10/10. The portion is very large, I ended up only eating half of the chicken but I'm happy to have left overs. I got it to go with the Peruvian Rice and fries but I'll be back soon to eat there in person as the atmosphere was amazing inside. I highly recommend going here, it's a must try. Their sauce game is absolutely on point and they have great prices too. And it's BYOB on top of everything!

Bob J.

Yelp
Went to Brazas this evening with a friend and all the reviews are spot on. The food is delicious! We had a whole chicken which comes with 2 side dishes-the plantains were absolutely delicious, as was the Peruvian rice, yes, the sauces are very good and spicy and we rounded off our meal with a lovely super fresh salad. They have really unique fresh fruit drinks and it's also a BYO. This is a great place on the 300 block of South St, excellent prices and our waitress was charming and super attentive. I'm already planning a return visit!

Chris G.

Yelp
Stopped in twice this past week. We had lunch and was amazing! Their chicken might be the best I've had in the city. My wife and I went again for dinner, brought a bottle of wine with us and split the 1/2 chicken along with the empanadas. Wow, so good! Service is great as well - they are so nice. Do yourself a favor and try them out!

Gianna M.

Yelp
The chicken empanadas are TO DIE FOR the pepper sauce inside is so perfect and the chicken was cooked amazingly. Such a beautiful little spot with true Peruvian food.

Jack T.

Yelp
Stopped in to the soft opening of Brazas new location on South Street. The Pollo a la Brazas was amazing. The Peruvian inspired BBQ doesn't have sauce like American BBQ, but instead a very flavorful spice rub that resulted in delightfully tasty chicken breast and wings. It came with Chaufa rice, a Peruvian take on fried rice. Overall, the portions were sizable with lunch taken home for tomorrow. The menu will be growing over the coming weeks as they move towards their full opening. It's well worth a visit -- I look forward to coming back to see what else they add to the menu.

Tameka S.

Yelp
Placed my order today via Uber Eats- I ordered half chicken, salad, veggie empanada and lots of sauces on the side. First, the half chicken looked more the a whole chicken. I have plenty left over for dinner tomorrow. This veggie empanada was LIFE! The sauces were great for dipping everything in it. I wasn't too happy with the food at Sardis but this place is a winner.

Maria V.

Yelp
I was debating on picking up lunch at this spot but noticed it way after I ate somewhere else. I do love me some Peruvian food but I enjoy good service along with it. I really needed to use the bathroom and politely asked a lady that works there if I could use it and even made sure I left a tip. She went on to say that it wasn't a problem and said for me to wait in line because some people were ahead of me. I said no problem and patiently waited until it was my turn. Some random older man came out of no where with the most NASTIEST (AND WHEN I SAY nastiest attitude I mean rude!!) approached me and told me that I couldn't use the bathroom. My problem is not with the fact that I couldn't use the bathroom but how he approached me. I told him that he shouldn't speak to people like that and thankfully had two other people witness how disrespectful he was. You guys should definitely speak to ur workers about a thing called good hospitality!!!!!!!

Yelp
For food it was one of the best meals I've had. The ingredients were fresh, everything blended well together and I would definitely try again and recommend :)

Ryan S.

Yelp
Fantastic! Yuca was amazing, chicken was delicious and very juicy! Highly recommend!
