Brooklyn DOP is a New York-style pizzeria that opened in Brooklyn, New York in June 2022. It was founded by business partners Thomas Gian Ardito and Jason Rocco D'Amelio. Ardito was an avid home cook and had been crafting pizza pies in his home kitchen since 2016. Later on he enrolled in the Goodfellas Pizzaiolo Mentorship in Staten Island. By 2022, Ardito began making pizzas in his apartment and selling them every Friday via Instagram in order to help pay his rent. D'Amelio came on board with the apartment pizzeria operation and soon they began looking for a location to start their own brick & mortar pizzeria. The duo chose the name 'Brooklyn DOP'. In Italian, DOP stands for 'Denominazione di Origine Protetta' (meaning "Protected Designation of Origin"). It's a promise to the consumer, a quality indicator that makes a product unique, inimitable, and worthy of protection. In just two years, the modest pizzeria in Park Slope has earned a reputation for being one of the best new pizzerias in Brooklyn.
I recently visited Brooklyn DOP while I was cycling around NYC. I was trying out a number of Brooklyn breweries and pizzerias and this was my first stop of the day. Although the pizzeria is relatively new, I had heard nothing but great things. The interior had an old school NYC slice shop design theme. There's a limited amount of counter seating inside, more seating out front in the street, and even more seating behind the building on their patio. Although a customer can order a whole pie, most of the business at DOP seems to be slices. I ended up getting slices of their "Spicy Margherita" (premium aged mozz, fresh mozz, signature fresh tomato sauce, Sicilian oregano, torn basil, 24 mo aged parm regg, EVOO, flatiron pepper flakes, mushroom, shallots) and "Nonna Mena with Roni Cups" (fresh mozz, topped with garlic/basil confit hand-crushed tomato sauce, Sicilian oregano, torn basil, 24 mo aged parm regg, EVOO, pepperoni cups). Both slices were delicious! I would describe DOP as an old school NYC slice shop with a modern artisanal twist. I give them my seal of approval!
