Nestled in East Walnut Hill, this cozy Japanese spot serves up inventive pastries and soul-satisfying ramen, perfect for casual foodie adventures.
"A cute Asian American bakery-café full of houseplants and Japanese art may be the last place one expects to find Cincinnati chili. But Cafe Mochiko in the city’s East Walnut Hills neighborhood often serves its own version of the dish: a Cincinnati-style ramen. ... The Cincy ramen keeps to the traditional pork, bouncy house-made noodles, and tingling heat while adapting to local tastes through the chili flavor backbones of cinnamon and cloves. Bentz completes the bowl with a jammy boiled egg and a handful of shredded cheddar." - ByDaniel Walton
"Erik Bentz and Elaine Townsend created Mochiko in 2019 to supply pastries to fellow food businesses and directly serve customers a menu of pastries and ramen inspired by yoshoku, or Western-influenced Japanese cuisine. Early in 2021, the pop-up evolved into a brick-and-mortar location in East Walnut Hills. Part bakery, part izakaya, the restaurant offers dishes like omurice, curry tonkatsu, and hamburger served on a fluffy bao bun, as well as sweets like a dalgona coffee pie." - Andy Brownfield
"After the Asian American café and restaurant Cafe Mochiko landed on BA’s 50 Best New Restaurants list, I knew my husband and I needed to go on our next visit to his family in Cincinnati. We first went for dinner and there truly wasn’t a bad bite. The small, casual sit-down dinner is surprisingly shareable. The chili miso udon was a slippery warm-spicy pleasure to eat. And the shitake don (a bowl of rice topped with tamago and shiitake and oyster mushrooms) featured velvety-soft egg, chewy mushrooms, and perfectly cooked rice. I don’t eat beef, but my husband ordered the Cincinnati-style chili ramen, and, in his words, “It made me want to slurp from the bowl like it was cereal milk.” Of course we went back the next morning for pastries and milk tea. The pandan doughnut was the best of the bunch, but you won’t hear me complaining about the ube halaya croissant or the Thai tea snickerdoodle." - ByElazar Sontag
"You could build a whole day in Cincinnati around Cafe Mochiko. Show up early for fresh coffee and a taste of one of Elaine Townsend’s superlative pastries—think purple yam jam–filled croissants, everything cream cheese bao, and sweet-savory corn bibingka." - ByThe Bon Appétit Staff & Contributors
