Breakfast shines brightest: buttery croissant pucks, black pudding benedicts
"When you want a breakfast that feels especially celebratory, Fallow fits the bill. The St James’s postcode, marble tables, and wedding-worthy flower and lighting arrangements are all giveaways that this is somewhere for a very fancy morning meal. And the Fallow Full breakfast is the dish to get. Bacon has been smoked for 24 hours, the mushrooms are herby, the sausages are practically bursting from their casings. The prices are steep, but for a faultless full English, a birthday breakfast, and some photos, it’s a good shout." - rianne shlebak, jake missing, sinead cranna
"Someone’s graduated, someone’s made it to 18 without being incarcerated—whatever the reason for celebrating, breakfast at Fallow fits the bill. The St James’s postcode, marble tables, and wedding-worthy flower and lighting arrangements are all giveaways that this is somewhere for a very fancy breakfast. Juicy sausage patties are sandwiched between Fallow-branded buttery croissant pucks, and a black pudding benedict soaks into a honey waffle ready for dunking in rich mushroom ketchup. The prices are steep but for a celebration and some photos, it’s a good shout." - heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna
"Thanks to a combination of interesting food and innovative use of social media, you can be sure that you’ll be walking into a packed and lively restaurant here, whatever the time of day or night. The large, open kitchen counter takes centre stage, while there’s also a heated terrace if you can’t get a table in the main room. The menu offers a large and appealing selection, from snacks to sharing plates, along with vegetarian choices. There’s a discernible nose-to-tail ethos too; do try the smoked cod’s head with Sriracha sauce, a house speciality. The corn ribs are great with a cocktail." - Michelin Inspector
"Occupying a large, swanky premises in St James’s, this buzzy, sustainability-driven restaurant channels a whole-animal ethos into eye-catching cooking, with its signature cod’s head grilled and slathered in bright orange house-made sriracha butter. The team bakes sourdough in-house using leftover potato peelings, makes the sriracha themselves, and even grows mushrooms on-site so chefs maintain an attachment to produce, turning would-be waste into flavour. Beyond the viral dishes, an extensive, wide-ranging menu spans steaks, burgers and a good vegetarian offering, and the dining room hums as one of the busiest in the capital. A savvy social media presence invites you into the kitchen with behind-the-pass videos of signatures from breakfast royales to Sunday roasts, helping explain why swathes of diners keep coming back in both the real and virtual realms." - Andrew Young
"This Chelsea tart from Fallow was not my first choice of dessert, but in order to preserve the eight hours of sleep I need to barely function, I ignored the coffee mousse. It turned out to be a great decision. The slice came with a shiny bronzed top, which melted ombre-style into light butterscotch brown and then into a biscuit base. It's pretty enough to take to the hairdressers as inspiration for summer highlights—and it tastes as good as it looks. Each spoonful was nutty and sweet, with caramel hits that made it taste like a Werther’s Original. And the tangy cream kept all the sweetness in check.” - SC" - jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna
