The 37 Best Restaurants in St. Louis, Missouri | Eater

"The oxtail from Fufu n’ Sauce, bathed in a rich, saffron-hued palm nut sauce, is the type of dish that leaves a lasting impression on your psyche. The West African food truck serves it with a choice of jollof rice or fufu; the latter makes a better canvas for the tender meat, even if it might take longer due to the labor-intensive prep and popularity among customers. Togolese owner Adjo Honsou, a former scientist-turned-chef, usually parks the food truck on Enright Avenue, unless she’s catering a festival or private event (follow the truck on social media to keep up). Chef Honsou recently won season 3 of PBS’s The Great American Recipe. Joel Crespo" - Holly Fann

The oxtail is melting tender, go very well with fufu, must order. The beef stew is very good as well, but I am not sure is it suppose to be taste more spices ot no. 20-20 chicken wings taste a bit dry and no flavor. My friends said it was grilled before not fried.

Very good. My husband and I were customers from the food truck and tried the new restaurant. Lovely decorated clean and inviting takeout. The gentleman taking our order was very nice and helpful with great customer service skills. My husband ordered the Oxtaill pepper stew w fufu and said it was superb. I ordered vegetarian egusi with jollof rice and it was well seasoned and delicious. We also ordered the roasted wings although we didnt go with the sauce that was like honey hot sauce that came with it. She made a fabulous pepper sauce and it was perfect. But its not on the menu right now so... We also got the hibiscus mixed with ginger tea. Perfect blend betwèen African and Diasporan hibiscus. African ones arent that sweet and diaspora ones are very sweet. So it was sweet enough to satisfy a diaspora pallet while not too sweet for West Africans. Same for the Plaintain. Africans like hard non sweet plantain while diaspora like over ripe sweet ones. They were somewhere in the middle. Lastly had the cheesecake bites which were a delicious nice suprise . We got banana strawberry and peach cobbler... yeah.. peach cobbler cheesecake! And it was wonderful. Overall great food and apparently on doordash too so ill be ordering from there too.

I found a gem!! So glad I didn't drive past. I wanted something new and different for my taste buds. I was pleasantly surprised of the taste of the atmosphere and of the customer service. I pleasantly enjoyed all of my dishes that I ordered but the one that stands out the most is the roast beef stew delicious!!! 😋is an understatement.💯% recommend

Google
An off menu drink that’s a MUST TRY…the hibiscus tea & ginger drink MIXED! It was a recommendation from the gentleman who works there & said that’s how he drinks it 😋 and it’s sold in a gallon but you have to place your order in advance. And of course the igusi, fufu, plantains & jollof rice are DELICIOUS 🤤

Google
This is the most delicious, wholesome and clean African cuisine I’ve ever had! I also support the owner wholeheartedly. She’s great soil to sow into.

Google
This is easily one of the best food establishments in the STL metro serving some of the most unique food in the STL metro. Togolese cuisine is not something most Americans are familiar with, but it is mind-blowingly delicious. This place operates with care, and its flavors -- especially that of the jollof and the oxtail -- are something I constantly desire. FUFU n'Sauce -- bravo. I love this place.

Yelp
A highly recommended experience!!! I have been a Fu-foodie since the food truck days. The hospitality and genuine love of sharing good food shines through in everything they do. The space, while small is cozy and comfortable. The team is friendly and welcoming. They took the time to explain the different dishes to me and helped me make fantastic selections. I am a novice when it comes to most African cuisine. I am slowly learning and expanding my palate in new directions. The food is traditional home cooking with wholesome ingredients and incredible flavor. The bar is set very high for any jollof rice I have going forward. This is my favorite dish and it pairs well with everything on the menu. I hope you too will choose to step out of your comfort zone and expand your horizons.

Yelp
We came to order to go. Service was friendly and quick. Menu was straight forward. It is a pick up/to go restaurant. Not a sit down and dine. Nicely decorated inside though ! We got egusi with fufu And a side of jollof rice . We also got the hibiscus tea and ginger drink. This is our first time having fufu and egusi and it was good. To me, fufu definitely had similarities to mashed potato but yet still different and distinct taste. The egusi was good too. I have nothing to compare it to but it was just okay. I've had jollof rice before from other places. Not sure if today's jollof rice was a bad batch or something but the moment we opened the container, the smell of cigarettes hit my nose. I still tasted it though and it tasted like I bit into a lit cigarette. It's also not like a smoky smell or taste either. It's literally exactly like the smell and taste of a burnt lit cigarette. But like I said maybe it was a bad batch today. But I have never had jollof rice that tasted and smelled like this one . Both drinks were really tasty though! Definitely recommend trying the drinks!

Yelp
Not my first time coming here! The sample made me want to come back here again. I ordered fufu with egusi, oxtail with jollof rice, and fried plantains. It did not disappoint! I was so hungry, I devoured everything the moment I went back home. The portions are a lot, which is great for leftovers for the next day. I feel healthy eating it, especially with an abundance of veggies included here. Flavorful as always and cravings are satisfied. The cashier is super nice and helpful. He was patient with me, because I didn't read the menu properly lol.

Yelp
You have to come check this place out if you wanna try some really great flavorful food! If you're in the market for trying something new and not something that you've had before in St. Louis this is a great place. The owner is so welcoming and so supportive and will take your time to talk to you if you have any questions. She really just wants to get This wonderful food out to the public. They also have catering available, which is really fantastic! Go ahead put the order in ahead of time and take it to your next party. Everybody is going to be in love with the different flavors than what you normally get with catering. Certainly a must try. The beverages are amazing. The food is great. It was all really tasty and fresh!

Yelp
Very flavorful to match the very flavorful owner! The food and the cooks/owner that makes it is just lovely. Owner is welcoming and full of cheer. Restaurant is small but styled and enamored with African decor. Staple dishes like egusi, fufu and plantain! The black eyed pease are sooo good! New cuisine that is deserving of being relished over, enjoy! Recommended.

Yelp
Run, don't walk, to try authentic cuisine from the best country in Africa (yes, I am biased), Togo. The food reminded me of home. I have no words to describe just how amazing the beans were or how delightful the juices were. Do yourself a favor and check out FUFU n' Sauce the next chance you get. The staff is friendly and open to answering all your questions. The owner is an absolute delight!

Yelp
I had the pleasure of attending the Yelp event here. Adjo the owner, is so sweet, warm and inviting. The beautiful decor reflects her West African heritage. We got to hear about how she got started by cooking and watching her grandmother. We sampled Egusi-a West African stew full of deliciousness. FUFU was served to scoop it up with. The Beef Stew was not your average kind. It was warm and full of spices and flavor. We also had Jollof Rice and Black Eyed Peas - OMG! The taste will have you wanting more. The fried Plantains were tender and slightly sweet. We washed it all down with some Hibiscus Tea that had floral undertones and was perfectly paired with our meal. This is the new experience you have been looking for! Go and order your take home items today! There are many other items on the menu to enjoy as well. Parking is limited. You will soon become a FuFu Foodie!

Yelp
I've had FUFU n' Sauce before and have never left disappointed. This time was no different. I'm so happy to now know that they have a brick and mortar. Congrats!! Things to keep in mind that location parking is limited so be aware if you are in need of close parking in case of physical disabilities. The space inside is decorated uniquely and it feels very personal which is something I truly appreciated. There is not much seat space inside but LISTEN the food i tried today was soooo flavorful. I had the jollof and beef stew, plantains, and surprisingly my favorite thing was the BLACK EYED PEAS! YUMMMM! Wishing continued success to FUFU n' Sauce as they embark on their new physical space.

Yelp
What started as a food truck that went viral during Covid has now become a hidden gem right in the heart of St. Louis. Fufu n Sauce is a true hole-in-the-wall spot serving homemade African cuisine, and it's one of those places where the flavors speak louder than the décor. Service is attentive also. The menu showcases authentic dishes made with care, scaling from small food truck orders all the way up to catering for 500 people. Out of everything I tried, the standouts were the egusi and jollof rice, paired with their hearty beef stew. The egusi is a rich tomato-based stew cooked with roasted pumpkin seeds and spinach - earthy, savory, and deeply comforting. The jollof rice is equally fantastic, prepared in a tomato-based sauce seasoned with West African curry that makes every bite vibrant and flavorful. We ended our meal with fried plantains and ice cream, the perfect sweet finish after a spice-filled meal. Everything was not only delicious but also felt wholesome and nourishing. If you're looking to experience bold, authentic African flavors in St. Louis, Fufu n Sauce is absolutely worth the visit. It may be a small, no-frills spot, but the food packs a punch and leaves you wanting to come back again and again.

Yelp
Where to even start! This was a fantastic experience. I was a part of the yelp elite group last evening and had a blast. The owner, Adjo, is such a vibrant woman ready to share her culture through dishes she grew up with back home in West Africa. The ambience is cozy and inviting. I would highly recommend the Black Eyed Peas and Plantains! Those were my absolute favorite. I'll also be needing that Ginger Tea by the gallon! Will be back soon.

Yelp
Wow, the food is amazing and the owner is great! Definitely one of the spots to try in STL! Not much space for seating and it's mostly a takeaway spot but it has a cozy feel to it.

Yelp
FUFU n' Sauce was at Earth Day Festival this year and my friends and I literally sat on a tree stump at Forest Park and passed the fufu and oxtail stew around and ate from the same plate. The meat was so tender and flavorful. This was my first time having fufu and oxtail stew and I was really impressed!
google avatar

Jami R.

Yelp
Authentic West African food! So much flavor that actually reminded me of my recent travels to Africa. The handmade baskets brought back memories. Although a small space, the design and decor is so homey and welcoming.
google avatar

Yelp
Very Disappointing!!! Way overpriced; $22 dollars for a single serving of beef stew with a side of rice. The stew only had a few pieces of actual beef - the rest a bunch of mush - - There's other places in St. Louis with much better food and much lower prices - take this place off your list!!

Yelp
I ordered the Egusi, fufu, chicken wings, and rice. Everything was well seasoned and unique. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The ambiance was really nice. It had the feel of being in someone's home. 10/10

Yelp
So I was able to take part of a Yelp community event and try out this place. I will say this is the first time I've tried plantain and I kind of liked it, but it it isn't necessarily something that I would go in and order myself. But the Fufu and the egusi was good. I will return for that!

Yelp
Fu Fu and Sauce is a cozy and small restaurant. It is decorated in African Art. There are tables, but you stand instead of sitting. The owner, you can hear her accent as she tells her story of how Fu Fu and Sauce was born. She prepared a limited menu for us Yelpers. The service was great. You are greeted with a smile. The owner is passionate about her introducing her Fu Fu and culture to St. Louis. Everything was appetizing. The food was great. I learned that she offers ox tails and lamb chops, too. I have to come back for oxtail and lambchops. The ginger pineapple was a bit strong for me. Our menu consisted of jollof rice, beef stew, fu fu, egusi soup, blackeyed peas, and plantains. I had a great time meeting, eating, and connecting with Yelpers. There is a parking lot in front. The lot is small. I had a banquet to attend. Therefore, I didn't want to get too full. This was my first time trying West African cuisine. It won't be my last. If you ever want to try authentic African cuisine or in the area, give them a try.

Yelp
Enjoyed treats at FrizzFest in Tower Grove Park this past weekend. It was rainy and crowded, but I was greeted cheerfully when it was my turn to order. New food for me, and I was delighted! I'll be back to the restaurant to try more dishes.

Yelp
This is hands down one of the best food spots in the STL metro, offering some of the most unique flavors in the area. Togolese cuisine isn't something most Americans are familiar with, but it's absolutely incredible. This place truly puts care into its dishes, especially the jollof and oxtail, flavors I'm always craving. FUFU n'Sauce, you nailed it. I'm a huge fan!

Yelp
Hmmm...had college friends from Ghana, so Ive had plenty of West African stews as well as Kwelewele, shito, banku, kenkey, and fufu...just visited Ghana a couple of months ago for a couple of weeks. The fufu tastes more like potato than cassava. The oxtails, while tasty, taste like American oxtail, not even Jamaican, and definitely not West African. They lacked the complexity of flavor I expect in a West African stew. The food was good, but not what I expected.

Blessy J.

Yelp
Brilliant Nigerian , west African fare.. we had zozo wings , plantains , oxtail and goat stew with jollof rice. The stews were excellent but loved the oxtail. Great flavors. Felt zozo wings needed some sauce otherwise nice. Been following them on IG when a food truck and glad they have brick and mortar now. Go check them out!

Yelp
Great service & even better food! The food was fresh & there wasn't a long wait. The decor was beautiful, showing the owners roots.

Yelp
Where do I even start. The ambiance and the decor of this place are so inviting and encapsulating. My lady and I went for our anniversary. We were greeted by the friendliest man up front who helped us with what we should get for our first time. I ended up getting the oxtail and palm-nut stew that came with fufu, and she got the Zo-Zo wings with Jallof rice. We got fried plantains to share. The Oxtail was so rich it would almost melt in your mouth. The flavor that resulted from using the delicious and soft fufu to scoop up everything in the stew was a culmination of rich, creamy, and hearty. The rice and wings had a subtle kick that creeped up on you but just enough to add to the taste. The wings were saucy at first taste and then tender and flavorful. The rice had so many different flavors and was almost creamy. The plantains were soft, and sweet with a bite from the fryer that tied the whole dish together. They almost put us in a food coma and I still woulda ran inside to get beignets if they weren't almost closed. We will DEFINITELY be back again to try the rest of the menu
