Where to Eat Vegetarian and Vegan Food Around Boston

"After closing for a bit, this beloved vegan and vegetarian restaurant is open in its new location within the 88 Market Food Court. The menu is thankfully unchanged, with all the fan-favorites, including bowls of tofu in spicy coconut curry, a wealth of noodle dishes, and warming soups. The meals feature seitan, tofu, and tons of vegetables, and the Grasshopper Supreme — chili basil sauce slathered on steamed eggplant — is a must-try." - Nathan Tavares, Celina Colby, Megan Hennessey, Eater Staff

Boston Restaurant and Bar Closings, May 2024 | Eater Boston

"After nearly 30 years, the cult-favorite vegan restaurant Grasshopper in Allston is shutting down on May 29; owner Hoai Nguyen told Boston.com that the restaurant’s lease had been terminated and there was another prospective tenant willing to pay higher rent, though a landlord representative disputed that and said the lease was ending naturally and they did not want to renew due to ongoing property maintenance issues and unpaid rent. Nguyen hopes to re-open Grasshopper in another location, ideally in Allston or Brighton." - Erika Adams

Grasshopper - Review - Boston - The Infatuation

"There’s something called an “Eggplant and Tofu Surprise” at Grasshopper, an all-vegan spot in Allston. We usually think surprises are as ridiculous as Tesla’s current stock prices, but it turns out this dish - made with a spicy black bean sauce - is pretty good. Perhaps the only disappointment is that there are no chapulines on the menu - yes, we know, they’re not vegan. Place your order here. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

A Boston vegan landmark reborn at the Super 88 food court, still serving beloved Chinese-American staples like No Name and black pepper seitan. Its 2024 reopening was covered by Boston.com; the welcoming, community feel endures alongside generous portions.

Their “spicy” black pepper seitan is ridiculously sweet. Multiple of us ordered it and it’s beyond sweet, I’m not sure how much sugar they add to this but if you’re diabetic or watch your sugar intake- do not order this. I couldn’t eat my food & had to give it away because it would give me a blood sugar spike. Very disappointed.

We were only in Boston for a short time and went here for a Mother’s Day lunch. It was incredible having a menu of all vegan/vegetarian meals as most restaurants do not have a lot of veggie options usually when dining out. We were overwhelmed by the choice! We got the “Happy Family” dish with rice, fried tofu dumplings, imitation shrimp with stir fry veggies, a rice noodle dish and even a vegan cheesecake slice. The dining area is more of a food court style seating in a building with a few other restaurants inside. It’s not fancy but that does not bother us. They have disposable cups for water, but they still serve you hot tea and bring the food to the table, as well as cleaning the table afterwards. The server and kitchen staff were very friendly and accommodating. If we were staying in Boston longer we would definitely be back to try the other items on the menu. This is an excellent choice of restaurant if you are looking for something low key for a group with vegetarian or vegan dietary restrictions. They have a lot of imitation meat options so it’s great for meat lovers who are looking to try something different too!

If you're looking for generous portions of delicious food, made fast, but still fresh and done well, this is the place!! This might be the best vegan chinese food in New England. My husband has been craving a lot of these dishes but unable to find vegan friendly replacements, until now. We live in RI but 100% will be back.

Food is still very good! Friendly service. Glad they found another location. Dining is in a food court. We ordered our usual, the No Name and Black Pepper veg beef. They were both delicious. Also got veg chow fun and wonton soup. So good.

Food is still awesome, though you cannot expect great ambiance from a supermarket food court. We ordered the tofu hand rolls and the no name. The portions were large and the food was worth the price. We’ll be back - hope all the former fans find this new location and support :)

After having lived in Allston for a few years and hearing the No Name hyped up, I finally placed a carry out order- and oh my god, the hype is real. This place is amazing and I’m so sad I didn’t try them sooner! Very fast pickup order and while my interaction with staff was limited, they were very nice :)

Been there repeatedly and tried several different things on the menu. But, my favorites have always been "Grilled Vegetarian Chicken" appetizer and the house special "Sweet and Sour Sensation". I did not like the House fried rice though. Plan to return to explore the rest of their menu and perhaps the buffet option that they offer once every month.
