"At Electric Burrito, the fries come inside your tortilla, but at HighLife, their burger spot, they come loaded with queso and dill pickles. Located right around the corner from the Cali burrito spot’s original East Village location, HighLife is serving up a simple menu of thin-patty (not smashed) burgers, hot dogs, and fries. Unfortunately, the champagne of beers is not for sale here. Their burgers taste like a homemade version of a quarter pounder with cheese, or an In-N-Out Double-Double, and we mean that in an absolutely complimentary way. There’s no big secret to their secret sauce, no toppings that you’ve never seen before—this is just a great version of American fast food joints, made with high-quality ingredients by hand. The counter service spot has no seating, and is open until 1am (and 3am on the weekends), so keep it in mind for after you’ve had a few Miller High Lifes. Food Rundown HighLife Burger Offered as a single or double (we prefer a single, but won’t fault you if you’re hungry), the burger’s thin patty is well-seasoned, and it’s topped with onion, crunchy lettuce, and juicy tomato. It looks like an emoji version of a burger, and kind of tastes like one too. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it is a great version of something simple and classic—and it hits even harder the later it gets. photo credit: Will Hartman Hot Dog It’s a hot dog, griddled to perfection. Nothing more, nothing less. You can get it with queso though, if you’re into that sort of thing. We are. photo credit: Will Hartman Fries With Pickle Queso A sort of approximation to In-N-Out’s animal-style fries, these loaded spuds are coated in rich queso, a mayo-forward special sauce, and a bunch of chopped dill pickles and pickled jalapeños. If you’re coming here after the bar with a group, get an order to share. photo credit: Will Hartman" - Will Hartman
"Opened in February and described as 'the lowbrow burger spot from the new-school burrito trio,' this project signaled the team's move on to a next venture next door (the tapas-bar filings noted above)." - Melissa McCart
"A new fast-casual outpost from the team behind a new-school burrito spot expands into burgers with a pair of offerings on potato buns sourced from a Massachusetts bakery (not Martin’s): a regular two-patty cheeseburger and the HighLife, an ode to In-N-Out with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, and a special sauce; a vegetarian version uses Impossible patties. The concise menu also features hot dogs, fries, and a dill-pickle queso." - Emma Orlow
"The trio behind Electric Burrito is opening a new restaurant at 135 First Avenue between East Nine Street and St. Marks Place on Thursday, February 27, next door to its burrito stand. The fast-casual American menu features a pair of burgers on potato buns sourced from a bakery in Massachusetts (not Martin’s): a regular two-patty cheeseburger and a signature burger described as an ode to In-N-Out Burger with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, and a special sauce; a vegetarian version uses Impossible patties. Also on the menu are hot dogs, fries, and the dill-pickle queso. Partners Will Wyatt and Edie Ugot join Alex Thaboua; as Thaboua says, “It’s something we’ve had in the back of our minds since before we opened Electric Burrito,” says Alex Thaboua of the opening. The 290-square-foot space has a standing counter for dine-in service, will offer third-party deliveries, and will have late-night hours — staying open until 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday." - Nadia Chaudhury
