Boston’s Best Gluten-Free Dining | Eater Boston

"All of the baked goods at Jennifer Lee’s in Boston Public Market are vegan and free of nine of the most common allergens, including gluten, peanuts, shellfish, and soy. That means treats like muffins, doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, and waffles are safe for a huge number of diets. And only the savory items, like a barbecue-pulled jackfruit sandwich, include coconut. The bakery also has a location in Worcester." - Celina Colby

The woman working was absolutely amazing, I wish I caught her name. I ordered the cookie brownies which was absolutely delicious considering I have so many food allergies, cupcakes and another brownie that she recommended. I sat down and realized I can’t have cinnamon so I went back up to her and asked if there were cinnamon in what I ordered. She kindly pulled the ingredients book out and reassured me that everything was safe and let me see for myself that everything I ordered had safe ingredients. I’m so beyond happy with my experience and she made my experience so warm and comforted me since I have a lot of anxiety trying new places. I’m grateful for everything you do for people like me. 🩷

Google
This place was the best thing that completely brightened my mood! I have a severe tree nut allergy, and in my whole entire life, I have never been able to go to a single bakery and order a desert. This was my first one. People don’t think that we have to sacrifice things, but we do. I appreciate this bakery so much and all of the amazing things they do! The people were so kind, the shop was so clean, and even said on the counters to not put other food down for risk of cross contamination. I felt completely safe. On top of it, their food was delicious! You HAVE to try their cookie dough donut! I can’t thank you enough for this experience!

Google
I hate to say this but this wasn’t that great, I understand that it’s allergen and gluten free and so resources are limited, but the bbq sandwich wasn’t great. The cheese was bad, the meat was bad, and the bread was bad. Gluten free cupcake was also a bit dry. But I do love that this is an option in the market as there isn’t a lot of places to eat for people with allergies. But it didn’t hit unfortunately for us

Google
The frosting is the best thing they make. Cupcakes are pretty good. Cannolis are 5/10 and blondies would not recommend. Went to the Boston Public Market location and the station had a sign that said “we’ll be back” that was there for almost an hour and the half in the middle of the day.

Jennifer Lee’s is a must visit for me anytime I’m in Boston. I have to go, and get many treats. I love all of her baked goods. I am not even vegan, but had to give these a try when I was roaming around the Boston Public Market. It was love at first bite. Anytime I have visited, the staff has always been so kind, helpful, and informative. I have also heard their interactions with other customers. With such a specialty bakery, of course people are going to have questions. And sometimes people can be difficult. The staff is so patient, helpful, and informative. Amazing customer service. This bakery is Top 9 allergen free, and vegan. You’ll see some negative reviews. Don’t listen to the haters. Things are going to taste different when some of the “standard baking ingredients” are replaced. This is coming from me, who has a huge sweet tooth, and many baked goods from many places. Jennifer Lee’s bakery tastes amazing. When you go to The North End, there are no vegan options for desserts. NeverMind gluten and allergy free options. Jennifer changed that. 100% absolutely recommend trying this bakery. Best vegan treats in Boston!

Google
An excellent bakery. The cannoli came wrapped in a crunchy waffle-type roll instead of the usual crepe, which added a delightful crunch. I was very happy to be able to eat a cannoli despite my allergies, and the baker was very attentive and kind. My husband agreed that it was one of the better cannolis he'd had in Boston, and he's not limited to gluten-free options. Strong recommend.

Google
Only went here to get a bathroom code, but walked out with possibly the best cupcake I have ever had in their Boston Creme. Even without Gluten Dairy or Eggs, they’ve created a cupcake that has a perfect outside crisp texture, and a soft and moist interior that doesn’t crumble. I’m generally not a chocolate fan either, but I appreciated its inclusion which is high praise. Would 100% recommend for a quick treat.

Google
I found this bakery through a google search for bakeries with gluten free options when I was visiting Boston in August 2024. I reached out to the number provided and asked if she has gluten free cinnamon rolls. Cinnamon rolls have always been my FAVORITE dessert and I had not been able to find anything of the sorts since getting diagnosed with a gluten allergy. She informed me she only makes them about once a month but upon request she specifically made and saved 2 for me. Then texted my number after I left the bakery to make sure I was the person who picked them up. I visited Boston again November 2024 and texted the number requesting a cinnamon roll. She said she was super busy so there as a 50/50 chance but to reach out the next day and she would let me know. The same night she personally reached out herself to let me know she had made some. The customer service and level of dedication alone has made me adore this bakery. The fact she makes my favorite dessert gluten free AND it’s delectable is a huge plus. Highly recommend and I wish I could give even more stars! 😊

Yelp
Had the most delicious vegan panini from the shop at Boston Public Market! The girl working there was super friendly and helped make recommendations on the menu. The desserts looked delicious as well. Love that the entire menu is so allergen friendly. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I've stopped at Jennifer Lee's a few times and there is a good variety of tasty treats. My only real complaint is the person working the counter didn't know much about ingredients.
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Gluten free Dairy free! Top 9 allergen free baked goods including doughnuts. We had great service and selection.

Yelp
Gluten free whoopie pie at the BPM for the huz who has celiac. Not the best GF, not the worst. Conveniently located.

Amanda D.

Yelp
Highly recommend! Incredibly accommodating for all allergies and really nice to be able to have a safe and delicious baked good. Especially recommend their vanilla sprinkle cupcakes and their Cookie Monster brownies!

Yelp
As much as I want to really like this bakery & support local women, simply not a fan. It's important to have something for those w/ food allergies & sensitivities but it's not that tasty. The cannoli shells are hard & chewy, not crunchy; brownies are dry which was disappointing. So really depends on what you get & how fresh it is I guess.
google avatar

Alysia R.

Yelp
I wanted to try one of everything, but I settled on the blueberry donut and a chocolate cupcake. I was in town for the Boston marathon so the cupcake had 26.2 on top. So cute! Great for vegans.

Candace L.

Yelp
I read so much about how great her baked items were and decided to give her shop a try. As a vegan and baker myself, I was sadly disappointed. I ordered a red velvet cupcake. Upon first tasting the frosting, it was crusted over and overtly sweet without any hint of a cream cheese flavor. If this was meant to be the original ermine frosting, it failed at that as well. The cupcake itself was hard topped, stiff and dense. While I do understand this is gluten free, I have never baked anything gluten in my life that was this hard and dense. This cupcake was not springy at all and when pressed, the oil impression is quite evident. Maybe this was an off day for the baker? Not sure, but I would definitely take these off the shelf if I were the baking team.
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
not good at all. the cannoli shells are very very hard/stale, the donut tastes artificial and is incredibly dry, wanted to like this place so bad. it's nice to have an option but not the best execution unforchunetly

Kayla D.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! As someone who is allergic to dairy, eggs, soy and nuts - it's hard to find good allergy treats. Everything I've tried is delicious. The woman at the counter was super sweet and even heated up my Mac and cheese for me and brought it to my table. I go here every time I'm in Boston!
google avatar

Yelp
A very good all vegan bakery. In the Boston Public Market you can get all kinds of plant based sweets. Jennifer Lee's is just one of the doughnut places in here, but this one is better because it's all vegan. Get other treats like brownies and cookies. The prices aren't that bad for this. It also prides itself on being allergen free. Products don't contain gluten. They of course have no dairy either so it's good for all kinds of dietary needs and preferences. Friendly and helpful employees know a lot about the ingredients. Prices are okay considering it's a specialty thing. It's $3.50 for a doughnut. These come in many flavors including cinnamon and mocha. A good bakery for anyone who has allergies. It's completely dairy and gluten free. There's a good amount of variety.

Yelp
Super rude person behind the counter; so much so that I had to walk away. She didn't like that I didn't say the word hello before starting my conversation with her and she started yelling at me. Saw her later in the restroom....which she used and then left without washing her hands and then went back to her shop and handled food. Gross
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Meh. I was very underwhelmed. We came end of day, to be fair. There were not a lot of options and everything just looked dry to me. We ended up getting this cookie/brownie bar. While it was not dry, it pretty much had no flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing vegan and gluten free deserts! I always stop here when in Boston. This time I got an apple cinnamon cupcake, and a strawberry strudel type pastry. Both were excellent, the texture was really on point too which can sometimes be a problem for gluten free stuff. Would recommend going when they first open for freshest things.

Yelp
11/10!! The service was so awesome! Gluten free friends, everything is gluten free!! The desserts looked so good. It was 11 am when I went so I got a breakfast sandwich. It was vegan too! Thank you so much for the delicious sandwich. It was so good! I think I was talking with the owner, she was so nice!! Loved chatting with her!! Turns out we have family from the same place! I'll be back next time I'm in Boston! (:

Yelp
Absolutely loved this bakery. It's not often you'll find a place that has vegan and gluten free baked goods but alas, you'll be in luck here. This is no ordinary bakery, if you're expecting French-style croissants then you'll be disappointed, instead one must appreciate the allergen-free creativity of the items. We had one of the cupcakes and while it was pretty sweet, the texture was not too dense like some gluten-free foods.
google avatar

Kris P.

Yelp
Soooo delicious! I ordered beautiful cupcakes and some cookies! My 5 year old and I loved everything! We can't wait to come back and try everything
google avatar

Brenda C.

Yelp
Oooh baby do I love a good vegan bakery!! I got two cupcakes (boston creme and birthday cake), a red velvet cookie dough bar, and chocolate chip-wich. My FAV was the red velvet bar!! Gorgeous flavor, chewy texture, and how can you go wrong with red velvet. The chocolate chip-wich was delicious as well, a tad sweet for my liking but honestly I usually think things are too sweet anyways. My friend loved it. Didn't get to try the cupcakes because I gifted them, but my friend assured me that she loved them!! Really enjoyed my experience and would come back often if I lived in Boston!!

Yelp
Truly some of the most delicious GF bake goods I have ever tasted. The vanilla chai donut was ! They have a great selection of baked goods.

Michael A.

Yelp
For a bakery advertising itself as allergen friendly, we got an incredible amount of attitude when asking about coconuts. I had to point out that the sign said to ask about coconuts in specific products to even get the woman to look up from her phone. My girlfriend returned other days and the service was better, but to advertise yourself as an allergen friendly place and get treated poorly for asking the question that was handwritten to ask is unacceptable. Food was pretty good and girlfriend was delighted as no nuts no dairy can be tough
google avatar

Rita R.

Yelp
Good coffee, vegan options. Wish I could go back more. Glad to have a place with options. Cinnamon roll was ok.
google avatar

Yelp
Yum! I was in Boston recently on a vacation and we stopped at this bakery a few times over the course of a week. Everything I had was so decadent and delicious! Definitely more creative than your usual vegan bakery fare!

Andrew G.

Yelp
Don't get the cannoli. The filling is like store bought can frosting that had been left out for a few days. Like rock. The actually pastry crust was good but could not save the rest of it.

Felicia H.

Yelp
Super delicious! The gal was so kind and they had so many allergen friendly options. The location is somewhat hard to find since it is in an Amex though.

Yelp
1.5/5 Pros: -Lots of vegan treat options Cons: -Pricey -Strange textures -Bland taste -- Pumpkin Chocolate Donut ($3.00) Pumpkin(?) cake donut with a chocolate drizzle. I say pumpkin(?) because it didn't have any noticeable flavor. The texture of this donut reminded me a little of mochi--chewy (almost gelatinous) and sugary. To be honest, I didn't hate the texture, but I think I am in the minority. Definitely doesn't taste anything like a cake donut I've ever had before. Brownie ($4.00) Huge portion, but we had the same issue as the donut with the strange chewy/gelatinous texture. The brownie tasted a little like cocoa, but was otherwise flavorless. These weren't actively gross (to me, were for others I tried with), but they did not deliver what we expected from buying a donut or a brownie. However, this place is definitely not worth it unless you have tons of allergies that prevent you from eating elsewhere.
google avatar

Tami C.

Yelp
The lady behind the counter was kind of rude. Just the way she spoke to me and how she was in general nothing in particular. She also offered a bag for the lady in front of me but looked at me funny when I asked for one. I bought a cannoli and a brownie for almost $12. I thought since it's a allergen free bakery the was price justified as long as they tasted good. The cannoli was so overly sweet I couldn't finish it. The filling was just pure sugar. Funny enough the brownie was almost not sweet enough and it wasnt as chocolatey as a brownie should be, it was also greasy on the bottom. I could make a better brownie and I should have just made some at home. Overall it wasn't a great experience. I was so happy to find a vegan bakery but this isn't the one.

Yelp
Jennifer's bakery is HANDS DOWN the BEST bakery for people like me with a ton of food allergies. Right now, she is working her butt off (even harder than usual, which must mean she's a superhero) to bake and deliver to people who are social distancing and staying at home. She is bringing joy to all of her customers and helping us all to feel loved. Ordering is a breeze, too! When we aren't in a pandemic, her Boston location (haven't been to the Worcester one yet, but I plan on making a trip!) is hopping and she takes orders and puts them out so quickly! She is so efficient and people come from all over to taste the treats she bakes. Love you and your team and thankful for all that you do!

Angie C.

Yelp
As a celiac who is also dairy free, I was thrilled to see a dedicated GF, allergen friendly bakery while on vacation in Boston. The bakery offered many sweet treats and I chose to have a cannoli that cost $6.38. I had never had a cannoli but had dreams of a nice pastry with a soft cream filling. I was a bit disappointed when I bit into the cannoli only to find the cream center to be a bunch of frosting and the shell to be a thin waffle cone texture. It did not taste bad, but it was very sweet and dense. I did not try other treats based on other reviewers being disappointed by what they purchased. So over all, not highly impressed. It is an expensive option if you are craving a gluten free treat.

Mag W.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying the food is fine, nothing I'd go out of my way for but I wasn't disappointed. I've been in on two separate occasions. The issue here is the service. Both times I visited the employees (including the owner during my first visit) were either bored or unfriendly or annoyed - I couldn't tell which. But the last time I went in, an employee who was helping me straight up told me I was buying a completely different item than what I got. I asked what the product was, she said it was a brownie, and when I got home I cut into it to discover what looked like a berry swirl and no chocolate. Note: there were no brownies in the case, so it's not like she grabbed the wrong thing. She grabbed the exact item pointed to. I very delicately brought it to the owners attention over Instagram just to find out what was in it (in case I had allergy issues). There was no apology, no explanation of ingredients, just "Hi, that's banana bread. Did a guy or girl tell you that?" When I replied, she never answered, so that one message was the only thing she had to say. It's been a week at this point, so I take it she's done with that conversation. When it comes to stuff I could make in my own kitchen, I'm not expecting 5 star service, but I would have settled for a quick "I'm sorry about that!" I won't be back.

Tanya S.

Yelp
Got a cookie monster brownie. Large sizes, tasty moist and chewy brownie (edge piece yum). Held up well into day 2, a bit greasy but overall impressed. Happy to have across a gluten free bakery! Friendly service.

Michelle C.

Yelp
Awesome customer service. In town for 2 days. My husband wanted my celiac teen to try a Gluten Free Boston Cream Pie. Jennifer said to come back next day and she would make a Boston Cream cupcake for my D. The cupcake was devoured so fast I didnt get a picture, so I took one of the case. Please go support an awesome Owner.

Brinda P.

Yelp
THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. DO NOT ORDER A CAKE FROM HERE. Reached out to this bakery through email to place a cake order on Tuesday. Jennifer said they could take on the order as a rush order with an extra charge and that it would be ready for Sunday. We drove into Boston to pick up the cake and it was no where to be found. The employee working reached out to Jennifer multiple times through text as she does not take phone calls. She later texted us directly to let us know the cake was never made and took zero responsibility for the situation but rather blamed it on us for not giving her 14 days notice to make the cake. We had to find a cake for our party last minute somewhere else. Only place an order with this bakery if you're ok with not getting a cake. We will never be ordering from here again.
google avatar

Shannon Z.

Yelp
This is a review for the gluten free, dairy free, nut free cinnamon roll. I have been gluten free for at least 2 years - possibly 3. I have tried so many bad gluten free cinnamon rolls. This has hands down been the best one. The dough had a tangy, yeasty flavor which is something you rarely taste in gluten free, it paired perfectly with the sweet glaze on top. SERIOUSLY this is the best place if you have food sensitivities, allergies or chronic health issues (that may be alleviated by diet).
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
I ordered a cake to celebrate a coworkers birthday. Our team has a variety of allergy needs and this bakery was safe and delicious for them all! She was very responsive to emails and I was able to place an order easily. Pick up was pretty smooth. Taste was great! Sweet icing, a solid chocolate cake with great texture not too dry or too moist, and raspberry jam! Will definitely order again.
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place because I know how hard it is to be a small business and appreciate the gluten-free offerings! However, every time I go to Boston Public Market I am just completely disappointed by the service. Pre-COVID I usually had to look around and wait for a few minutes before anyone was even there to take my order. (They seemed to always be anywhere but behind the counter). The last time I was there, a few weeks ago, I arrived at 5:30 and was told by the person working there that she had already turned off the panini grills and it wouldn't be possible for me to get any hot items because she turns them off at 5:30 and wouldn't turn them on again. (They officially close at 6, and it's a grab-and-go place, so I'm not sure why they would turn them off that early??) I had a bagel that was a solid okay (would've been better warmed up or as a sandwich, but what can you do?) that was pretty overpriced for the quality and the pretty terrible service. Once again this has been a consistent experience, not just a one-time issue. I wish I could support this business but I'd really rather spend my money elsewhere.

Emma M.

Yelp
We really wanted to love Jennifer Lee's Gourmet Bakery because we love the allergen friendly mission and focus. However, when we arrived, we found a sign that said "be back at 1:05," so we waited 20 minutes, and returned only to find it had been revised to say "be back at 1:35" so we had to wait another half hour, which was really disappointing! We hoped the cupcakes we bought would be worth the wait, but we found the texture of both to be very gummy and hard to enjoy. The icing was really salty on both cupcakes, and the banana flavor was really artificial and tasted like Laffy Taffy. The employee helping us also started texting on her phone part way through us trying to order, which was frustrating given that we had been waiting awhile and we're trying to order!
google avatar

Joyce C.

Yelp
I was excited by the premise of this little booth inside of Boston Public Market (allergen free and vegan!), however I think it's actual products could do better in terms of flavor and texture. I got the rum cupcake. For flavor: v average. Maybe I could say it had a little spice / interest (but tbh no.) For texture: the cake was too dense, and definitely could've been more moist. You could try to appreciate the chewiness, but even that's a stretch. While I do give points for the premise of the bakery, I have had much better vegan sweets. For me at this price, the cupcakes don't offer enough value, and I'm hesitant to try again (aka: would not.)
google avatar

Laura T.

Yelp
I had a cousin visit who has some severe allergies and is understably anxious about eating out. Through two days, we had a plethora of treats from the bakery that were safe, flavorful, beautiful, and scrumptious... You wouldn't know that it's an allergen free food. The person with whom we interacted was fantastic, explaining what was in the baked goods, and you could tell she takes great pride in her work. Thank you for making this a great experience for my out of town family and giving a treat to someone who doesn't often get these kinds of luxuries. Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Jerry M.

Yelp
Decent vegan bakery. Ordered a couple vegan caramel brownies. They were tasty, but a bit on the dry side. A little frosting or a more chocolate- gooey consistency would have improved these brownies a lot. Boston does not seem to have undergone the vegan revolution yet like Los Angeles or other cities; but Jennifer Lee's is a step in the right direction.
google avatar

Daria B.

Yelp
I went here twice today- it is so good! I went this morning and got a blondie and cannoli, and came back tonight for a thanksgiving flavor calzone. All were incredible! You cannot even tell they are GF, DF, vegan, etc. I love being able to order anything here and not be concerned about my allergies, and for being free of all of the allergens taste and quality certainly don't suffer! Also the staff are so kind and friendly! Both that assisted us, in the am and then the pm went above and beyond. I wish I lived locally so I could be a regular!

Lorraine M.

Yelp
Being GF is recent and have tried a few GF baked goods from other places, often times throwing them away due to taste and texture. I throughly enjoyed the apple cinnamon cupcake, perfect for fall.

Daniel B.

Yelp
Visiting Boston and we've been impressed with the flexibility for food allergy issues but nothing compares to this spot for allergy friendly treats. If your visiting and have any gluten or top allergies / intolerances this must be on your list of stops. We stocked up to take some home for the trip and everything is outstanding. The service is top notch also. Thanks for making our trip complete with this gem of a bakery.

Madeline I.

Yelp
As a vegan, it can be really challenging to find quality vegan desserts that taste like the real thing or even better. That's what intrigued me about Jennifer Lee's Gourmet Bakery as their entire store is allergen free and vegan. They had a lot of options from desserts to sandwiches to custom cakes. I ordered their birthday cake blondie, expecting it to be a sweet treat, but it was terrible. It was so sugary that it overpowered every other flavor. After my second bite (to ensure my first bite was correct), I threw it away and continued on my way. I can't speak for the rest of the menu but the blondie is a no go. In addition to being too sweet, the blondie was an extremely weird texture as other reviews have also experienced. I'm really disappointed in this establishment and expected better from Jennifer Lee's.

Yelp
We were looking for a bakery that could accommodate my son's 11 serious food allergies so we could order cupcakes for my daughter's christening. I'm an avid baker and always make everything myself, but time just wouldn't allow it for this event. My son has never eaten anything that has not been made by myself or a trusted family member, so I was super nervous. After looking into 3 other bakeries that are closer to home, no one was able to accommodate us. Jennifer Lee's was very professional and confident, making the ordering process easy. We got a mixture of vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, all with vanilla frosting. Our guests were in agreement that they were, overall, delicious. Vanilla was definitely more moist than the chocolate and all were a bit dense. My son was a huge fan and we would absolutely order from JL again, especially for the exceptional manner in which they handle allergies. Thank you so much!

Giggler3589 ..

Yelp
These cookies were amazing..probably the best allergy friendly I've had. I was visiting from Florida and just happened to find the place while wandering around. They were so friendly and the cookies were fresh baked! Made my day!!!

Nicole T.

Yelp
We've been going here for years! She outdoes herself every time. This year has been so rough on everyone but her deliveries are like a ray of sunshine. Such a kind and talented soul. Jennifer created our wedding cake last year and it was everything we wanted and more -- People are still talking about it. If you're visiting Boston or Worcester and can only choose one bakery, choose this one. Can't wait for the pandemic to be over so we can support the bakeries in person again.
google avatar

Christina T.

Yelp
I love visiting this bakery! I love that everything is vegan so I don't have to worry about the ingredients. Everything I've tried so far is beyond delicious, but I think my favorites are the salted caramel and cookie monster brownies. They are amazing! I also love the great service whenever I stop by. I'm usually there on a day when Jennifer's dad is working, and he is always super nice. I love speaking with him, and he sends me on my way with well wishes that I know are genuine. Thank you for all you do! I can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
Woah. This bakery was so bad I literally felt compelled to write a review to serve as warning for others. | Ordered | Brownie Bite Molasses Cupcake I love g-free bakeries. Admittedly, I know few in Boston but have eaten all the g-free options from Flour and Tatte (ravenously). I ADORE Unrefined Bakery in Dallas, TX and Sticky Fingers in Washington, DC. I prefer g-free desserts because I find the binders make the treats more moist and unctuous. Jennifer Lee had the weirdest gluten-free desserts I have ever tasted. Why was my cupcake GUMMY? I've had some stale chalky cupcakes in my lifetime but gummy tops those as the worst texture for a cupcake. The brownie ball was more like one of those protein breakfast energy ball things except if you searched the entirety of Pinterest for the worst recipe this one would be it. It tasted nothing like chocolate. You know those bird suet cakes that Home Depot sales? Those smell better (and probably taste better) than this disgusting weird ball did. You have prime real estate in the BPL - get it together.

Yelp
I ordered muffins and pastries from Jennifer Lee's for my office. It seemed ideal because everyone could partake, vegan, gluten-free, and people with food allergies. The delivery was over an hour late with no communication whatsoever. PLUS the baked goods were so-so at best. Definitely not worth the hassle.
