"The specialty at this colorful, rainforest-themed taqueria in Richmond’s 23rd Street taco corridor is its pollo al carbon: whole spatchcocked chickens grilled over charcoal in a garage adjacent to the restaurant. The chicken comes out supremely smoky and succulent, and the bright, zippy housemade salsas are a cut above. For the perfect family meal, order the whole chicken plate, which comes with rice, beans, and warm tortillas — the building blocks for a whole mess of delicious chicken tacos." - Dianne de Guzman, Eater Staff

Google
Delicious food at this no frills taqueria! We ordered a half rotisserie chicken and a fried tilapia. It was more than enough to feed our party of four. Good food at reasonable prices.

Katie Heuser

Google
I have only gotten the grilled chicken at La Selva and don’t plan on ordering anything else because it’s so good. Comes with salad, rice, beans, and tortillas, and the flavor is classic and comforting.

Johnny C

Google
We went to try some chicken dishes, but it was raining and it didn't seem they were grilling. We ordered chicken tacos and quesadillas, while they were very fresh and abundant there didn't seem to be much flavor. Next time I'll try the whole grilled chicken. Salsas were a bit runny. Staff was very nice. Decor seems dated.

Kaovin Deponte

Google
Pickup order was incorrect and workers tried to gaslight me and say I ordered it incorrectly and I should have added a note. They added guacamole to my fries and I did not ask for that. (Also an extra charge) and added salsa when I selected the no salsa option. Highly do NOT recommend. Workers will talk about you when they are in the wrong.

Maria Campos

Google
16 dollars for half of a small chicken? I was a weekly customer but never again. I wish someone would have told me when I placed the order over the phone, how much the price has gone up in such a short amount of time. Yes! That is the picture I took as soon as I opened the container

Nathan Garcia

Google
La Selva is an authentic Mexican restaurant in Richmond that specializes in chicken. The staff is friendly but struggles with English as it is primarily a Spanish speaking restaurant. Despite the language barrier, they are friendly will cater to your needs. The chicken dinner is sublime and feeds 4. I highly recommend repeat visits to enjoy all they have to offer. Parking is on the street. California covid restrictions are enforced.

Google
Salsa’s were very salty never had them so salty, taco meats Al pastor and caveza were not so fresh tasted kinda old and rancid on January 7 25.

Google
I just brought food from yall and it was a pieace off rubber in my daughters food that’s just nasty she almost choke im need a full refund

Jeremy R.

Yelp
We were passing through from out of town and thought we would check this restaurant out. We were surprised at the size of the items they served. The restaurant appeared clean and had a nice salsa bar. The two people cooking was also waiting on us and did an outstanding job. I would return to this location again.

Joon L.

Yelp
Had 3 tacos from them, pastor, carne asada, and pollo asado. All 3 were great. And the guy at the counter was really friendly. Got free chips and 4 different kinds of salsa. Definitely coming back.

Jeremi W.

Yelp
I'll preface by saying I ordered my food shortly before closing and maybe that contributed to the quality of food I got....but I don't think so. I ordered the chicken enchilada plate, a pastor burrito, and some tacos (1 chicken, 1 pastor, 1 carne asada) I paid $2 extra for 4 small containers of salsa. And the order came with a bag of chips. Chips - stale I tried one, no crisp, all chew, and I threw the rest of the bag away. Chicken taco - moist, basic flavor. Pastor taco - tender, juicy, flavorful Carne asada taco - omg overcooked, do not enjoy the flavor, ate 3 bites and tossed it. The meat was so hard and bland. Enchiladas- I love that they separate the toppings from the enchiladas themselves ::chefs kiss:: but the enchiladas themselves were unimpressive. Lots of bones in the chicken meat for enchiladas made it difficult to eat them without being very careful to chew slowly and feel around for potential bones. IMO, that's entirely too much brain work to just be stuffing my face. I wanted to give a new place a try and I'm semi glad I did because now I know, but I really could've gone without this experience and I will not be returning. I will say, the ladies working were pleasant but that's about all the good I had in my experience.

Kim R.

Yelp
No nos gusto el burrito. El arroz sabe muy feo , no lo recomiendo. Ocupan mejorar en su arroz y tener opiniónes veganos. Ya que ahi mucha gente que se esta asiendo veganos Pero la salsas saben ricas.

Delmy M.

Yelp
this great to for some drinks and food; saturday they have karaoke a bit loud but its fun :)

Nico M.

Yelp
Service was terrible, but the drinks and karaoke were ok. They never gave us our food and told us that they already did and so we ended up leaving and getting our money back

Yelp
** The following review reflects my delivery experience DURING the shelter-in-place order currently in effect. ** As Jamie W. and I were made fully aware at last year's Cinco de Mayo festivities, 23rd Street in Richmond is chock full of family-run Latin American eateries each one likely drawing their own devoted followings. Jamie and I, for example, are pals of Portumex since the menudo they serve there is really good. This raging pandemic has offered a glimpse at other nearby restaurants that otherwise wouldn't have drawn our attention. That's due to delivery apps like Door Dash which treats all these spots on a level playing field. What drew me to La Selva was the $21 Pollo al Carbon. On the menu, they accommodated us uneducated, unilingual souls by describing it as "Whole Chicken Everything". It was an entire chicken cut up in eight pieces and accompanied by six flour tortillas; sides of rice, refried beans, and pico de gallo; and a paper bag filled with tortilla chips and served up with little containers of a typical salsa bar selection. In other words, it was a family meal for a relative bargain price much like my mom used to get at KFC when the empty bucket magically turned into a Christmas card holder. The poultry was surprisingly tasty. Not really succulent but the breast meat wasn't dried out as I was fearing. I got the impression they make these whole cluckers en masse, so we were happy it was quite edible (photo: https://bit.ly/2TSGaK3). The rice and especially the frijoles were quite flavorful though likely calorific if that's a concern (photo: https://bit.ly/2Xx9EOi). Presentation is not a strong suit here but flavor is as we ordered two of the $6.25 Super Soft Tacos with the pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, cheese having shifted around on its travel to our home (photo: https://bit.ly/2TEDMGm). For an extra fifty cents, Jamie had pieces of pork added to his, while I had yet more chicken added to mine. Sloppy was just not a big deal to us as our bellies were getting filled. FOOD - 4 stars...get the chicken with the fixings...get sloppy tacos at your own discretion AMBIANCE - n/a...a 'shelter-in-place' treat SERVICE - 4.5 stars...it came fast and warm TOTAL - 4 stars...you hungry?...come here! Yelp
I found this place through one of my favorite food sites and was excited to give it a try! This place is on a somewhat busy street with limited street parking. The restaurant is pretty casual walking up to it and the interior is equally casual. The food site recommended the whole grilled chicken or "pollo al carbon" which we got and was delicious! We also got some different tacos, the carne asada was just ok though it's usually my favorite but the al pastor was very good! The burrito we got was ok, nothing super unique. I think in none COVID times they offer a salsa bar but during COVID just offered some salsa options. We got our food to go and it traveled fairly well. Overall if I were in the area I would likely return!

Yelp

Rollito C.

Yelp
Another disappointing delivery! But again, the food is really good. I called La Selva and remind them to be careful not to spill the sauce. A lady said that my food has been picked up by my dasher already and they always reminding there dashers to be careful handling the food and I can call my dasher to make sure. Call my dasher and remind him to be careful handling the food and he said, "no problem!" And this is what I've got...

James K.

Yelp
I have been craving lengua or cabeza tacos and saw that La Selva had cabeza as one of its meats. I also read about their chicken, so I ordered a cabeza wet burrito to try and half just chicken. The chicken had a good flavor and was pretty yummy. I loved the burrito. Everything together mixed well and had savoriness, acidity, and little bit of heat. The portion was huge so the food will probably last me 2-3 meals, which is great cause I can enjoy it for longer.

Ronald C.

Yelp
Got the Pollo la Carbon, 1/2 grilled chicken. $13 Was very good as was the beans and rice. Could really been better if the served homemade tortilla. They have free chips choice of green or red picante sauce. No salsa fresca but did get some on my plate. You can get some pickled vegi, radishes or grilled jalapeno too. The decor is a bit odd with giraffes and elephants painted on the wall. The black panther statue I'll give them as there are some in south America. Guessing this was an African restaurant before. They have a nice little outdoor patio where the also grill the chicken.

Azareya M.

Yelp
The owner was rude af I ordered a super burrito and as I bit down it felt like something cracked my tooth and I'm not sure if it was a rock or a tooth and I brought the food they were acting like they didn't wanna give me me a refund he just wanted to offer some more of there nasty ass food

Amy C.

Yelp
Ordered the pollo al carbon meal added a side of guacamole. The chicken, rice, and beans were good, but the guacamole had GREEN FOOD COLORING! It was an unnatural shade of green that I noticed as soon as I pulled it out of the bag. Seems like they were trying to hide the fact that they extend the guacamole with sour cream or something else. So disappointing. I'm not sure I'd order from here again even though we liked the chicken, because it felt dishonest trying to disguise the guacamole.

Ana Luisa A.

Yelp
ricos pollos azados todo fresco el lugar limpio y muy amables todos buen servicio

Victor G.

Yelp
La Selva Taqueria has a road show. (i.e they sell at farmers markets). many offerings, just noticed horchatas, bbq chicken (made on site). various mexican edibles and potato salad. pototo salad? locale: santa rosa farmers market (3/11) potato salad (3) - filled a hoagie box, at least 16 ounces -slightly spicy, usual mayo. other condiments, and peas & carrots. potatos fresh. *maybe i got a deal since everyone was closing up @1. 4 stars for the qreat value. whole bbq chicken $12? seen on net: -"Fight Trump and the Billionaire Class". seattle. wa. 2/17/17

Sean V.

Yelp
The nachos here are bomb. Everything else is trash. I ordered the burrito, which was a waist of my money. No flavor or seasoning to the meat. Just not my favorite. I've ordered from here twice and my opinion is the same. I only come here for the nachos.

Kyle B.

Yelp
I ordered a shrimp and steak burrito through DoorDash and let me tell you! This burrito had some much flavor! The juices in the burrito mixed well. They made my burrito to perfection, I forgot to take sips of my horchata because the burrito was so tasty. It's the flavor for meeee

Yanin L.

Yelp
Never order for a party or any time reliability is important. I ordered and paid 4 days in advance. When i arrived for pick up, they haven't started the order. I received my food 45 mins late. The biggest problem i had with this place is the bad customer service from the manager. The employee called the manager to ket them know i was upset, the manager would not speak to me and didn't even offer a personal apology. I spent about $180.00 for chicken and the manager couldn't even be bothered to speak with me directly. I asked the employee if she could at least give me free tortilla chips for the inconvenience and she said she couldn't do that without management's approval.

Jason Y.

Yelp
THE BEST BBQ CHICKEN!!!! They grill all the chicken out front on the bbq and it's the bomb. When I want some good Mexican food and I want it to have chicken on it this is the place I go.

Jeff A.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Ordered the whole chicken dinner with all the extras. Chicken is is smoky and juicy and just delicious. You get everything, rice, beans, salsa and chips. You can't go wrong for $20!! Will be a regular from here on out.

Jose H.

Yelp
Don't bother to waste your money - because you will waste it. My son ordered a burrito - simple meat, beans and rice. Well first they put cheese - my son is lactose. Second I couldn't tell u what type of meat they used BUT carne asada was NOT it. Tasted like boiled carne de res. It is pretty hard to mess up a simple burrito and this had to be one of the worst burritos I have ever tasted. I would give u my son's opinion BUT he is on the pot from the cheese. When I told the lady about their mistake this idiot responded with "well I am not the cook" Given her response their customer service gets no stars. Won't even get started on the tacky decor.

Joel K.

Yelp
Delicious, moist, chicken plate (1/2 chicken $13). Speedy service. I go there at least a couple times a month.

Ruben H.

Yelp
I've had their grilled chicken meals a few times and I really liked it but tonight I decided to go for the wet chicken burrito with green sauce and I have to to say I was really impressed! Great burrito! Tasty ingredients, good sauce and nice little side salad! Great spot for picking up a quick weeknight dinner!

Judy P.

Yelp
One of my favorite taqueria... order the wet burrito pastor and you won't regret it. If you order To-go, be aware that the cheese may stick to the lid of your box.

Ernesto D.

Yelp
Another gem in Richmond! You can drive by this place and wouldn't know this place even existed. Located on 23rd in Richmond, it is a place worth trying. The Pollo Asado is what you should order, with a side of beans and rice (chips are included). Meat is tender and has a yummy taste to it! Cooked just right and grilled outside daily. You can't resist the smell of it! This chicken has gone up in price the past couple of months so I don't eat it that much anymore. Tacos are really good here as well. Never tried their burritos but I am sure they are good as well. Everything that I have tried has been fulfilling. Homemade rice mmmmmm yummy! Try the horchata! Not too sweet but not bland... Just about right. it has your typical Taqueria menu so there's nothing out of the ordinary. I only gave it 4 stars because street parking can be a pain and price for Pollo asado has gone up. Service is good and the wait can take a little long depending on the time of day. Just follow the smell of chicken being cooked outside on the grill! Smells so delicious. This is better than Pollo Loco! Try everything on the menu. There's another location in San Rafael if you're in Marin county.

Diego R.

Yelp
They are getting four stars only because Taqueria La Taqueria in San Francisco on Mission, has five stars for me. I have to tell you the service is quick and nice. The tacos are great we had al pastor, carne azada and pollo azada. Excellent But now the Camarones a la Diabla are the best. My wife love them and always talks about them. It's also great to know that it's still owned by the original owners... enjoy We just had the Camarones a La Diabla and they are still great....

Liz J.

Yelp
I love this place! The chicken is roasted right outside and it's delicious. Order a whole one and 4 people can share it for a pittance. The al pastor is some of the best around! The salsa bar is amazing and full of unexpected delights, some of which will burn your face off. I love the murals and decorations and the staff are very friendly as well. I do miss the murals which used to be outside. A Richmond treasure.

Maribel Y.

Yelp
Generous amount for the price, but the chicken was dry. They also do not speak any English! Good thing I learned Spanish from school!

Sam T.

Yelp
So I was driving down 23rd on Cinco De Mayo and had to pull over for an ambulance. I just so happen to pull over in front of La Selva Taqueria. A guy was grilling chicken off a coal grill and the smoke blew my way! Well on my way home I decided to give this place a try so I went it with an open mind. Food: Your typical Taqueria menu. I ordered the chicken because that's what attracted me in. It was pretty good about what I expected but something was missing...I couldn't quite pinpoint it. I also ordered a carne asada taco which was wayyyy too greasy. Service: Gal who took the order didn't speak much English which I guess I can understand seeing how this area is predominantly Mexican. That's actually probably what added to the temptation. No English = Genuine Mexican food. Environment: Love the outdoor grill! They actually leave it out overnight which is surprising given the type of area its in (which means this area is ghetto). Amazed that they have this food cart thing to grille the meet for the tacos. It sticks out to the street and the smoke fumes out to the street....what a great way to attract people! Price: Not as cheap as I thought it would be. Given the area you'd expect super low prices because lets get serious here I can walk 2 blocks in either direction and bump into 2-3 of these similar joints. I'm a sucker for street food so I love their coal grill and their cart that sticks out to the street. The food is good but not amazing. The prices are higher than expected. I would definitely come back but probably not until I try a few other places surrounding this one. Food: 4 Service: 2 Environment: 4 Price: 3

ANDRE N.

Yelp
Chimichanga was really good! The food is very authentic and tastes like it was made with love. I also ordered the BBQ chicken and it was excellent, I can't wait to go back!

Melissa N.

Yelp
This is the real 'El Pollo Loco'. Look for the big smoking black grill out front. Get a meal with a whole chicken and stock up at the salsa bar. Two of us are usually not able to finish the whole thing. I crave this chicken. I actually don't find it salty, which is usual for me, because I think everything is too salty.

Steenaa G.

Yelp
They don't listen. Specially instructed them to make a certain way. They thought that I couldn't speak Spanish and laughed about how they didn't do it. They would probably spit in the food for all I know. Smh

I B.

Yelp
Ordered super nachos with everything on them. Came without refried beans, loaded with a bitter (way too many onions) green salsa. Maybe to cover up the fact the missing beans. My son's words, "Worst nachos ever" Disappointing.

Ada R.

Yelp
The best box of grilled chicken you'll ever have. Esta delicioso. Comes with a small side of rice and beans- they don't matter. The chicken is so good all you need is tortillas and salsa!

Emmett Z.

Yelp
i have been driving by La Selva for several years now, and i noticed this bbq yummy smell! So i said to myself, today is the day to stop. I tried the Pollo El Carbon, it was huge! and fabulous. -reminded me of the food in zijuanteneho, Mexico. I know I butchered the name.....at any rate, they make their own refired beans, and horchata. The flan is so good! As for the roaches i read about, who cares? they are in every restaurant, and we need to get used to em, they are here to stay!

Elenie V.

Yelp
I really love their chicken, rice, beans combo that feed the whole family! Really awesome. Also, they're Friday $1 tacos are so good!! Omg I wanna go there every Friday now ahhhh

naruto u.

Yelp
Friday $1 tacos!!! Oh man, it's so worth it. They put alot of meat too. I was surprise to see it when I got home. I think I found a hidden gem in Richmond. I went there to get a grilled whole chicken. It totally beats El Pollo loco. The portions are big. I describe this place as best bang for your money. The grilled chicken came with beans and rice. Beans are really flavorful. When I order there, it wasn't busy, so I got in and out in around 5 mins. Also free chips!!! They gave you a bag where you can fill it up yourself. See, it's totally worth your money. check it out. You won't be disappointed.

Rworange X.

Yelp
Great carne asada taco on house-made tortillas. The steak is full of flavor and topped with excellent green salsa, chopped onions and cilantro. It comes with two radishes and two very fresh lime halves. The shop has colorful murals on the wall. Plants and paper flags hang from the ceiling. Only three stars because I haven't tried much and the menu seems limited.

david w.

Yelp
The tacos were exactly like what you'd get in Mexico - simple, delicious and cheap. Really good chips and salsa. The restroom was also somewhat reminiscent of Mexico: light didn't work, no soap, and no paper towels. The orange soda was slushy inside. I didn't really mind all that, and really i thought the joint was quite charming. Good taco shack.

Ramon R.

Yelp
Ordered two chicken burritos both had bones in them from them just chopping up the grilled chicken . Every bite was disgusting never going here again!!

Thomas H.

Yelp
One of my favorite farmers market lunches/dinners. Get a whole chicken with a side and a drink for less than the price of a fast food meal!!! Cesar knows what he's doing on that grill and the chicken is delicious.

William C.

Yelp
Place used to be really good until one day the food just went downhill. Not the best food on the planet. We used to go here all the time. But now we avoid it. Place is nasty in my POV..

Karen L.

Yelp
Very festive decor for a Mexican joint. Love the salsa bar! Fresh salsa, the chips you can eat, and a few other things like hot sauce, grilled jalapenos, and pickled veggies. We all got the whole rotisserie chicken and shared that with tortilla, rice and beans. More than enough to eat for three people at lunch and not too shabby of a price.

Allen J.

Yelp
It took me awhile to stop and give this place a try. But once I did I was certainly happy. The chicken nachos are great and the second time I went I had the chicken burrito. Satisfied Customer every time.

Lisa K.

Yelp
I put three stars because all I ordered was one super taco and a small horchata and it was really good. I will be back for the chicken meal I read about. A little bit of a language barrier. I said I DID want a side of beans but didn't get them with my order, I wasn't charged for them so I was like forget it. Overall the "super" taco wich is pretty small tasted really good. So I would go back. ; )

Noe O.

Yelp
The Chicken is very tasty, its cooked to perfection. Very Juicy inside and cooked well. I love the way it tastes fresh and the seasoning is sooooo good. Highly recommend if your in the mood for Fresh Chicken. It comes with Rice and beans which are reallllly good as well. I haven't tried anything else, I only go for the chicken.

Maria H.

Yelp
Love their chicken which is charbroiled outside and the awesome smell leads you to them. Their salsas taste really good as well. Unfortunately I will no longer be coming here for my delicious chicken due to the customer service I received the two last Times I came in to get dinner for the fam. The women they have working there are more interested in their gossip about their boyfriends than the customers! I stood there for like 10 min waiting for them to finish talking (me trying not to be rude), they glanced over a couple times but continued their conversation until they were done then they proceeded to helping me. But do you think she focused on my order while I was talking? No! They kept trying to continue their conversation, elbowing themselves in the ribs and giggling! I had to repeat parts of my order to her because she kept forgetting to write it! But it was something different when two guys came to Order. Their attention was all on them. They received the best service. Seemed like service you offer at strip clubs so you can get a good tip. So dissapointed.

Lupe C.

Yelp
Ok so this review is ONLY on their tacos since I have not tried anything else. So I live in Hayward but my BF lives in Richmond. I just went last night and I ordered Three tacos. One was chicken and the other two asada. Well what can I say??? mmm I don't like to give bad reviews but the tacos were tasteless. My boyfriend suggested to put some guacamole sauce so it could have more flavor, I did but still not the best tacos I've had. The boyfriend agreed that the one's we make at home tasted 1000 times better. I will probably be going back if im in the area again but wont be having the tacos.

Brenda C.

Yelp
Okay, so I loved La Selva Taqueria... there food is really good service can be a bit rood sometimes but overall good food, until last Saturday my family and I decided to go there for lunch and before we got our food there was a Roach on our table! totally discusting, discusting I'm sorry but if you're a restaurant you best make sure there are no rodants...I don't care if you have to pay a service monthy to keep them out, What really blew me away was that we let the waitress know and she let the Manager know but did not come over and say a thing about it...that is hella Rude, not to mention we just bought $75 worth of your food!
