Leschi Market Review - Leschi - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Leschi Market has been a neighborhood grocery store and deli since 1948, and you can always count on this place for its big wine selection, and supply of snacks and beer for a Lake Washington boat day. Ironically, the best thing here is something you won't want to eat on the stern of a boat at all—the messy prime rib sandwich is best enjoyed in a sturdy, landlocked chair. This masterpiece is only available on Friday and Saturday evenings from the very back of the shop where the deli and meat counter is. The sandwich itself is pretty straightforward, with cuts of marbled beef you can read horoscopes in, all piled onto a ciabatta roll with tangy mustard smears. But it’s the Saran-wrapped container of au jus that’s the shining star, whether sopped up by bread or sipped straight out of the container. Next time you find yourself here, skip the variety pack seltzers and kettle chips, and head straight for the foil-wrapped meat." - Kayla Sager-Riley

I’ve been shopping here for years and generally love having a neighborhood market I can count on. But a recent interaction at the butcher counter was disappointing — I asked about pre-formed hamburger patties I’ve bought here before and was told, with a laugh to another staff member, that they “never had them” and that I should “get ground and make my own.” It wasn’t the words so much as the smug, dismissive tone and shared laugh that made it feel unwelcoming. This is a great store and I want to keep supporting it, but moments like this make it hard to feel like customers are valued.

Google
I go out of my way to buy groceries here. It’s family-owned, everyone is so kind, they have an amazing selection of produce and meat and their wine collection is peak. Stop giving corporations all your money and support local businesses (if you can).

Google
This place has an amazing wine and beer selection, plenty of staff on hand, a great produce and meat selection, and very convenient.

John Rucker

Google
Nice little grocery for the essentials. Impressive wine selection with a knowledgeable staff to answer any questions and make recommendations.

Google
A bit pricey. However, something to consider. Ahi tuna was delicious. Strawberries smell real, well pricey though.

Dominique Smith

Google
They have a great selection of food and drinks!

Google
Wonderful neighborhood market. Service is great. The store is small but the items have been well curated. Excellent wine section and staff are knowledgeable and can offer suggestions.

Google
Love this little neighborhood market. Like to swing by here to pick up a roasted chicken sandwich when I'm in the area. This place has good mojo.

Yelp
Someone called this market a bodega and I nearly laughed out loud. This a bougie wonderful market that is much more expensive than a bodega. I live near the market and I love being able buy most of my products without having go to QFC or Safeway. While I love the convenience, the prices can be pretty high. I bought one can of soda and the next day the price went to ten cents to almost three dollars a can. I get everything is getting expensive, but it still does hurt the pockets. I do recommend as they have a variety of meats, cheeses, wines, etc that make them a gem.

Yelp
Friendly local independent market. Great selection and I found some new local items. I'll be back!

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood market. That staff there is absolutely incredible. You can tell they really care about their products and help you find things. It's not the largest market, but I still always end up finding exactly what I'm looking for. Quality produce and meat! Love coming here.

Garth K.

Yelp
Pound for pound the best wine selection of any market in the city. Always friendly service. Small but mighty.
google avatar

Yelp
Love that neighborhood markets like this still exist! The staff has always been friendly and helpful. Plus, where else would you find such a great selection of wines?? Greek. Georgian ( no, not the state. try them). Thank you.

Yelp
I just moved to the neighborhood from Kansas City and the man checking me out from start to finish didn't say a WORD to me while he was having a full conversation with a rich blonde woman. Maybe it's being from the Midwest - but I think I'll stick to checking myself out at Safeway. A robot could easily do his job. People in the area were rude - I tried bringing my dog in, and people shout "service dogs only!" I left him in the car for 5 minutes and already another rich blonde woman was dragging some poor guy out to my car to I assume break out my windows. This neighborhood sucks.

Yelp
I was lucky enough to grow up in the 70's within walking distance of Leschi Market. It was awesome then and has never changed. One thing that has changed is that now I'm definitely old enough to buy wine there. They have an excellent selection and expert advice to make the right choice for the occasion. Another long time favorite is the butcher shop. Always good. Our go-to item is the hot bulk sausage. Terrific in patties for breakfast and a nice way to ahem -sorry- spice up a meat pasta dish. Highly recommended. Nice selection of organic and non-organic fruits and veggies. 'Friendly staff too. Love this place. I really prefer coming here to a small family owned market over any chain supermarket. It might be a little more spendy but well worth it.

Yelp
What a lovely little market! It's a small space packed with lots of enticing options including an impressive wine selection. All the staff were friendly and kind. I hope to stop by again soon!!

Yelp
I love this market. Was in the neighborhood jogging with friends along the lake. My car was parked nearby so I did a visit to see what's in the store. I bought rishi tea, local whole chicken, local honey, tri-color couscous.. this little neighborhood market has a little bit of everything. The aisles are narrow but the displays look nice. And the service is friendly. Definitely recommend shopping here if you're in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Best part of a great neighborhood. World class wine selection. Tons of local purveyors throughout the grocery isles.

miel s.

Yelp
Lots of eclectic options for such a tiny store! Right by the water with a local feel.

Yelp
From the moment we walked in this place treated my son and I as though we got lost in a sundown town. Never going back. My kid had highly recommended this place because he spent a summer working for a marina near by but even he said the way they looked at us was strange and creepy. My son is of mixed race heritage. I, on the other hand and quite Black. So...never going to give those clowns my green money ever again.

Yelp
I frequent this market for quick needs..... wine, beer, veggies..... yet finally tried the "grab and go" prime rib..... wow! Cooked perfectly! I'm coming back!

Scott P.

Yelp
I always find whatever I am looking for here, no matter how unusual, gourmet or simple. Like Borax, dried porchini mushrooms, vinho verde, housemade chicken fennel sausage or fresh or imported pasta. If they don't have it, they can probably order it for you. My latest moment of appreciation, was finding that they now use compostable produce bags. That is so ahead of the curve - even the P.C. PCC is still using plastic. And if you want to reuse, they sell mesh produce bags, 3 for $2.99! Thanks to the management for the environmentally friendly measures and thanks to the amiable and ever capable produce team!

Yelp
What a nice little grocery store! My girlfriend and I were visiting her friend in Leschi, just outside of Seattle, and Leschi Market is just a mile or so from her house. They have everything that your national chain supermarket has, including a deli with prepared foods, fresh produce, and fresh meat and seafood! Beer and wine is also sold here. They even sell freshly sliced prime rib roasts on certain days of the week. It smelled amazing! This is a pretty small store located in a little plaza, so there aren't that many parking spots, but they have everything you would need. Their prices are a bit higher than traditional supermarkets, but it's not that bad! Well, except for the $11.99 pints of Jeni's ice cream?!?! Employees were very friendly and efficient with checkout. Brown paper bags are free, but they charge 10 cents for the large plastic bags.

Daniel H.

Yelp
Best grocery store in Seattle. Amazing how much they can do with the space they have. Nicest most helpful staff in town.
google avatar

Amy Starr B.

Yelp
I'm so in love with this little market! Lots of great food and beverage options! The employees are equally enjoyable!

Matt N.

Yelp
Fabulous family owned business that is always worth a visit. Great selection of wines and a full service butcher. Don't miss the prime rib on Friday and Saturday
google avatar

Shelley M.

Yelp
excellent organic chicken sandwich in deli. delicious house roasted chicken on moist bread with crisp lettuce and light mayo mustard. not all the crap others overload it with. no bacon or cheese. you eat it and its tasty hand food and you feel good after. this is how you do it
google avatar

Jas B.

Yelp
We come here all the time. Friendly staff and they have a great wine selection. I especially like their small deli food section from local producers.
google avatar

Inna B.

Yelp
This is a pretty cool little neighborhood market. I frequently visit the area and on occasion prefer to pick up some food here instead of visiting one of the near-by restaurants. They have have some good items in their deli and an interesting cheese section, but I usually like to wander and pick up strange things like vegan jerky. I haven't found anything super awesome here, but it's a nice little market and they do have some good specialty items. I'd be happy to have it as an option near my home or work.

Yelp
I'd lived in the Central District for 3 or 4 years before I started going to this great local store. It has a kind of dumpy look on the outside. But it's one of the very few independent markets still left in Seattle. I wouldn't do a week's worth of shopping here as the prices on staples can be high. But for a quick load-up for dinner, or when I need just a few forgotten items this place is great. Also, as mentioned earlier, their wine selection is staggering. There are varieties and prices to please every palate and pocket book. Steve, the owner is always willing to give you a suggestion, and will sell at a case discount. They do their own butchering and you can get some really nice deals on steaks. They'll often sell odd shaped cuts at a discount. They make there own fresh meatballs which are great on Spaghetti. On Fridays and Saturday they cook excellent prime rib which sells out quickly. This is the kind of local place that is a real contribution to it's neighborhood and should be supported.

Jeffery S.

Yelp
I love this store! It may be small, but they have a wide variety of products, superb produce, and a great selection of locally roasted coffee. All of the staff are friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Love this market however there is a new checker who will not allow you to buy a bottle of rose if you are with a parent...

Yelp
I've been here for odd and ends over the past year or two while I'm in the area. I actually did some grocery shopping today and am totally blown away by all of the random quality items they have here! I kept walking up and down the aisles multiple times finding new, fun items. Things you can't get at Safeway or whatever chain grocery store you may typically go to. I'm sad I don't live closer. Anyway, I got a bunch of organic produce, which wasn't outrageously priced. I bought some bulk Leschi sausage that I can't wait to try and some other meats from their meat section. They do have a wide selection of craft beer, cider and of course a whole aisle of wine! And they're non-alcoholic beverage selection is huge with lots of drinks I've never heard of before. Lots of prepared food if you're on the go. I saw some meatless sections for all you veg's out there. I like their selection of local products as well...something you'd expect from a neighborhood market I guess. I'm in love w/this place!

Amy W.

Yelp
Great roast chicken. However! One day before mask requirements went into place in Seattle , and at this store where the beloved owner died of covid , way way too crowded, complete Inability to social distance once you go inside. And a grinning fool of a checker whose mask is draped around his neck instead of his face . Putting everyone at risk . Do better.
google avatar

Carol C.

Yelp
Leschi Market is the greatest. They have everything! They make the best chicken fennel sausage in town. The owners and employees, though, are what make Leschi Market special. Don't tell anyone, but sometimes we go twice a day!
google avatar

Dan J.

Yelp
Wonderful sandwiches, meats and much more. Gorgeous flowers. Nice wines. Grab a meal and go out in your boat or spend the afternoon in the park. Friendly and helpful staff.
google avatar

Shoshana D.

Yelp
Last night during an exercise class I spent about 10 minutes talking with another woman about how remarkable Leschi Market is. We both gushed about the quality of their house-made sausages and smoked meats, their high quality meat selection, their reasonably priced organic produce, the AMAZING wine selection and their kind, competent and always properly staffed employees. So then I figured if I love store so much, I might as well let Yelp know it too. If you live in the neighborhood you already know and love this gem of a family owned and run store. If you don't live in the neighborhood, you should show up to buy a case (or half case) of mixed wine and get a nice discount, buy what I consider to be the best bacon in Seattle, or pick up some of their deli salads and sandwiches and have a nice picnic at the lake. It's a small old fashioned throw-back store that has remained current. A rare thing.

Yelp
Leschi Market is knownfor its terrific wine selection and we've been there several times looking off that something special. We stopped in on New Year's Eve to get some champagne and were rather taken aback by the brusque treatment we received while shopping. We knew exactly what we wanted but were having trouble finding it. The guy working the wine section was downright rude and pretty put out that we were asking for assistance. I'm afraid to go back, quite frankly. A real pity because everyone else there was great

Adrienne P.

Yelp
Ordered a smoke turkey, was told $2.49 a pound, no birds 10lbs and under, total price was $58. Now I'm told while at check out there is $25 smoke fee for the bird. Get home unwrapped it, it's a rotisserie bird, that's not even seasond, I guess a little salt would have been an additional $40.

Yelp
My little sister's friend's big sister (I know, huh?) used to work behind the deli counter at the Leschi Mart and say to customers "Have a nice day. Fu*k you very much" And even though my sister's friend's sister hasn't worked there in 20 years, for that reason alone I have refused to shop at the Leschi Mart until late last year. Shut up. I know I'm an idiot. Wonderful house-made sausages, amazing Italian imports, and a wine aisle that makes me stop and read and drool. At first glance this place might look like a glorified 7-11. And the parking situation is appalling at best. But give it a chance. Once you get to know it, you'll like it. Have a nice day. And fu*k you very much.

Yelp
I don't need another PCC or Whole Paycheck, but I do need and enjoy a local market that offers the staples and the little extras I need to feast upon. I also enjoy bi-monthly local gossip from the staff, it's a great extra perk. If you don't enjoy the delight of an old fashioned meat cutter in a super market then this place probably isn't for you. Steve and his family have owned this place for decades. They still stuff their own sausages, will smoke a turkey for you and stock ground veal, sausage and other parts for that special occasion. (Check the glace selection.) They have an extensive wine selection with a case discount per the request of locals over the last decade; it's not my thing, but it sure seems popular. The beer selection is only OK. The staff is great. I can resume a conversation a few weeks later as if we've never been apart. You can get great local political info as well - Steve used to be very active in Seattle politics. This place is the Cheers of local markets and we've been using them for nearly 20 years It's not a mega QFC or Whole Paycheck, but your local family run market.
google avatar

Daren D.

Yelp
For the awesome unique selection. Most [local] indie shops/chains have many a different things than the giants do; this place has stuff I've not seen/noticed at places like TJ's, PCC, etc. That green "natural!" coconut drink was good. Lots of munchies I'd like to get my hands on, too...

Yelp
God bless Leschi, a little corner of small-townish heaven just over the hill from the decidedly urban Central District, where I live. I walk a lot, and one of my favorite walks takes me over the hill along Lake Washington Boulevard to a little marina area lined with lakeside restaurants, a Starbucks, a bike store, and the Leschi Mart. This little grocery store has been around forever, as in several generations, and has the easygoing vibe and inventory of a store which hasn't had a mortgage payment in years. The main attraction here is the wine. They have a lot of selection, much of it highlighted with Wine Spectator ratings and reviews on little signs on the shelves. The Leschi Mart has everything you need for an impromptu picnic, whether you're on a date or just by yourself and want to enjoy a nice meal. There are pre-made sandwiches, salads sold by the pound, cheese, prosciutto, fresh fruit, sodas, gourmet chocolate, gluten free stuff, you name it. It also sells new and used books (for beach or boat reading), cheap kids' toys, grocery staples and things like sunscreen and diapers. Regular customers can have their groceries put on their account. The cashier pulls their card out of a box of customer accounts, writes down the amount of that purchase, and the customer goes on his way. I don't have an account there and don't plan to get one, but I like the idea that a store that keeps customer accounts on paper cards. Again, very small town. This isn't really a place to go grocery shopping. It's like an expanded general store/deli/wine shop. I do wish they'd clean the inside of their microwave once in a while, but it's part of the charm.
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
Great wine selection at amazing prices, and knowledgeable folks always around to ask about wine selection. There are always interesting locally produced items that may not get a chance at a chain grocery store. This is the antithesis of a chain grocery store in fact, having been run by the same family for 2 generations, I believe. The owner, Steve, is highly involved in the community. He is the founder of a crime prevention group and serves on the Seattle Neighborhood Group's board. They are an actual butcher, roast their own chicken everyday, prime rib on Friday and Saturday and make amazing sausages and bacon in house. There are pre-made sandwiches and deli salads available, great to grab for lunch or a picnic in the park. The ambiance is slightly shabby, and the aisles are a little crowded, but the staff is competent and always friendly. The prices are certainly less expensive than the next small grocery store down in Madison Park. This is a wonderful, well stocked neighborhood grocery store where they know the regulars names. If it is just busy in the lot in front of the store just park across the street.
google avatar

Ton Y.

Yelp
This is where we buy most of our wine (and overflow grocery shopping when we forget something on AmazonFresh or we need something NOW rather than tomorrow or later in the day). Great wine selection, best prices in Seattle. Esquin beats some of their prices, and Esquin have more variety, but it is a hit and miss with Esquin. Leschi mart has a smaller collection but significantly and consistently higher quality wines. In terms of quality and price, there are no wine stores that can even remotely compete with Leschi mart. And no, you won't find the Lafite, Margaux in Leschi mart (although you will find high end bubblies).
google avatar

Lesley C.

Yelp
LM is the best for everything you need. Fresh meat, house made sausage, great sandwiches, fab wine selection, great employees...
google avatar

Rich T.

Yelp
Steve has built such a wonderful place here. Super convenient and great to get the last minute items.
google avatar

Shree M.

Yelp
They have everything you can think of -- over the years I've looked for all kinds of things (food/household supplies/...) and I've never been disappointed by the Leschi Mart. The people who work there are so friendly, I feel like I live in a small town. Yes, you can save a few dollars by driving to a Safeway or a QFC a few miles away... but why drive when the Leschi Mart totally rocks!
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
Great find. They lean towards the gourmet side without going too foo-foo and without having all your favorites replaced by inferior house brands (long, steely gaze at Trader Joe's). It's fast and they have a pretty amazing amount of stuff arranged in there. And yes: the wine aisle is a wonder to behold.
google avatar

Brittany M.

Yelp
My dear mom used to work here (before she fell ill to cancer) and she would always bring me home some pasta - this yummy pasta with olive oil, parsley, and organic chicken. Oh yum yum yum! I finished the cancer walk yesterday, so I decided to go back. I was very happy to see that all of the produce is VERY clean. VERY VERY CLEAN. I have never seen cleaner produce in my entire life. If only I was running low on veggies for my rabbit - I would have bought some, but the veggie supply was full. I found more pasta - the usual chicken one, but now there is one with salmon!
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
Terrific selection of wines. Had a nice Loire Cab Franc and a Gascony white. Steve is such a great, real guy. My guess is that if you want something, he'll get it for you. A unique person. Great meats.
google avatar

Urban L.

Yelp
Great neighborhood market! Yes, it's more expensive than the grocery store. But, if you're on your way home after a long day at work and can't face the crowds/parking at Trader Joe's or Madison Market, it's easy to stop here to grab just a few items. Whether it's read-to-eat salads (recommend - vegetarian pasta and orzo salads), goat cheese, Amy's frozen pizza, or even TP, you'll find what you need. Also, it's a great place to buy a bottle of wine on your way to a party. They have a wide selection and offer helpful advice.
google avatar

Shawn S.

Yelp
This very well could be the best small market in Seattle~ A beautiful location and if you're a meat eater, be sure to check out the homemade's sausages, daily roasts and other delicacies in their meat section. A very wide selection of wines, organic and local foods and smiles from the managers and workers. A++ Grab lunch and enjoy a view of Lake Washington at the park right next to the market.
google avatar

Jesse P.

Yelp
This market has everything and they rule. It's a local Leschi neighborhood grocery store that knows their customers. I mean, if I'm looking for a random ingredient, ethnic or otherwise, there's a 90% chance they have it. One whole isle is dedicated to WINE. They have a butcher in the back and a band saw?! They cut me marrow bones and stock bones. They smoke their own turkey and sausages as well. They got rid of Barilla pasta immediately after their anti-gay stance. I brought back a piece of meat and they sent me home with an apology and a handful of steaks. My kids say whatsup to Robert in the back and he gives them sausages. They have a back doggie door and you can knock and they'll give your furry babies a meaty treat. I can go on and on here. Yeah, it's a bit pricey, but it's way more than that. They care. Leschi Market rules.
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
This is pretty much the only grocery store in the area. Its on the lake as well, so if your in the Leschi area and want to get a picnic, this is your spot.
google avatar

Virginia L.

Yelp
I love my neighborhood market, great beer, wine, fresh veggies, and awesome fresh meat. The sausage and steaks are the best I've ever had and they score extra points for having my brand of dog food! Love it!

Yelp
The Leschi Market (I refuse to call it a Mart) is our go-to for last minute dinner supplies. Their prices are good, their wine selection is seriously abundant and they have a great selection. Their produce is a tad limited, but so is their space, so it makes sense. Their meat case is great, and I love that I can buy house-cured pancetta. Their other packaged meats (ground beef, chicken breast, etc.) is of the highest quality, which I really appreciate. Parking is a bit of a nightmare, as you have to back out into oncoming traffic to get out of their (extremely small) lot. I try to park in the lot across the street when I can, and I often have to, as the front lot fills quickly.
