The 22 Best Restaurants In SoMa - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"We’ve never ordered something we didn’t love at Moya. The snug Ethiopian spot with the big windows on the corner of Minna and 8th Streets does both vegetarian and meat dishes equally well, and everything is perfect for casual dinners and in-and-out lunches. What makes this counter-service spot stand out are the depth of spices and layers of flavor. We love the buttery kitfo with the tangy housemade cheese, smoothly rich shuro, and berbere-kissed misir wot. And you’ll never go wrong with the onion-packed doro tibs. Lunch or dinner, just get here." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong

Combine it with the tangy homemade cheese, and you get maximum decadence. This kitfo can be slightly seared upon request. photo credit: Melissa Zink Doro Tibs Their sautéed chicken isn’t as saucy as most renditions we’ve had. That said, it’s still onion-packed, mildly spicy, and filled with flavor. You’ll never go wrong ordering this. photo credit: Melissa Zink Vegetarian Sampler This highlights Moya’s standout dishes and is the best of all meat-free worlds. We pledge allegiance to the misir wot—these red lentils come super thick and deeply spiced. Shuro Described in one word: phenomenal. This ground chickpea stew is velvety and rich. Moya is a superb spot for Ethiopian food in this part of the city. Came here after another spot nearby was closed unexpectedly and so glad we did. We came right as they opened for dinner so the service was quick and easy. The food came out in less than ten minutes and what a feast it was. The vegan sampler platter was enormous contrary to the photo of it looking like a grain bowl. Everything on it from the greens to the lentils was full of flavor and absolutely delicious. Enough to feed 2+ people for sure. I also had ordered a spicy tofu dish as well and THAT was something else. I don't see tofu being used often in Ethiopian restaurants but this was really a hit. Savory, spicy, and filling. Our meal came with a side of injera and I was shocked at how fast it came out too. The quality of the injera was great too and made for the perfect vessel to get all the tasty food in our mouths.

Google
The food was amazing. Gluten free injera was freshly made and came with small extra cost. Vegan sampler was so good. I would even recommend not getting any meat and sharing two samplers.

I got off late from work and had missed my dinner. This restaurant smelled so good walking by I had to go in. I simply asked for something cheap for me and easy for them to make cuz they were close to closing. The food I got was simply amazing. I can't explain how much I enjoyed this food. The woman working was friendly and beyond nice. This was such an unexpected find I'm still in a lightweight shock. I will definitely be going back for more and I encourage anyone hesitant to just walk by and smell the food as you pass. It's so much better than it smells! Thank you again!

Google
Modern take on Ethiopian, offering choose-your-base accompaniments (injera, brown rice, salad) to classic vegan and meat mains. Siga Tibs, sumptuously spicy, is generously portioned and full-on flavor.

Google
Main Points: 1. The Injera is delicious. 2. So many great veg options. My dish had a side of collard greens and it was the star of the show. 3. You get a PLATE of food and what feels like a bucket of injera. This alone is a reason for me to come again. 4. Service is incredibly quick and I was chowing down in <10 mins of sitting down. 5. I ordered the doro tibs with medium spice and it was incredibly mild. I was bummed because this tasted like a generic homestyle chicken dish. Aka: this was tasty but forgettable. 6. Don’t order the tea since it isn’t anything special. Not worth $$. TL;DR Even though Moya isn’t 5 stars, it’s well worth the trip (especially if you choose the vegetarian and vegan options).

I had to stay at the All Star to keep an eye on my old palette K Ĺoompatata from Nairobi, because she was just released from the hospital and needed a night watchman. Tata tells me the food from the Moya Restaurant a block away is worthy of a visit so I sent a runner to bring back whatever the special of the day is. I don't know what the the food was but it was amazingly delicious with simple local ingredients, and wonderful spice flavors of lands far off. Would I recommend Moya...Yes! Would I recommend a stay at the All Star...No! Moya Restaurant ☆☆☆☆☆

Google
Individuals with trypophobia must beware: the spongy injera served as the perfect vessel to scoop up all the delicious flavours of the vegan platter and the doro tibs. Never had Ethiopian food but this was a great foray into it taste-wise.

Eric McDougal

Google
Highest quality Ethiopian food in the city. I have only ordered the vegetarian options before, but I can say with certainty their veggie sampler, shiro, and mushroom tibs are the very best you will find in San Francisco. Their Injera is also better than most other establishments.

Yelp
For 3-4 people we ordered (and loved): - Vegan sampler - chicken tibs - beef tibs - Atkilti Wot (sweeter; comes with cabbage & carrots) - misir wot - kik alicha Got every dish except one with injera. We also got the cheese but the meal is great without it too. Next time I want to try the mushroom tibs. This is for the door dash delivery version. This gave us enough leftovers for a whole additional dinner.

Yelp
the food was delicious and plentiful, the presentation was so beautiful and appetizing. i loved the misir wot, the tofu tibs, and the injeera. i ordered the vegetarian options, my friends ordered the meat ones. the place is casual and comfy, its very open with lots of windows and lots of sun. great place for a weekday lunch - we were able to sit a group of 6 super easily. the staff was super nice. i'll definitely be back!

Yelp
We were here last summer. Really excellent food. We didn't realize how big the portions were and ordered too much! We had the vegan platter and siga tibs. Minus the salad, the injera, wats, and beef were delicious.

Yelp
ummm LOVED this place! Melu was so sweet and helpful. the food was so good and fresh and will 100% be going back and ordering takeout. they have a good amount of vegan options (the mushroom and lentils were my fav). the injira is so so so soft and comforting ambiance is homey and cute

Yelp
I'm glad to see that they're still thriving after all these years. This is one of my favorite places to get misir wot, and their portions are massive. The injera that comes with your order is also one of the fluffiest and tastiest you can find. They're happy to give you more if you ask as well. Everything is spiced perfectly. I wish I lived or worked closer.

Yelp
ordered the vegan sampler to go; for under $20, it made a super filling and flavorful lunch. i can't wait to try their other dishes. injera was tender and they gave a perfect portion.

Yelp
We were in SOMA and it was dinner time so a visit to popular Ethiopian spot Moya. They were very busy with a constant flow of DoorDdashers. The staff are work hard to keep up but manage to keep orders flowing. The vegan sampler is generous and delicious with fresh salad on the plate. The chicken was tasty but lacked the flavor punch of typical Ethiopian fare. Injera was fresh and spongy, served on the side.

Yelp
Visited Moya for the first time on Friday December 27th. I went with my husband and a friend of ours. We showed up a few minutes after they had opened. It's a very bare bones restaurant, and you order/pay at the counter. The woman working was very nice. We ordered: - gursha injera rolls - ayb homemade cheese - vegan sampler - shuro - mushroom tibs Our order came with a giant basket of injera for enjoying everything. The standouts for us were the gursha, shuro, and mushroom tibs. Everything was great, I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time this weekend and found myself ordering again a few days later. The food is very tasty and filling. I ordered the veggie sampler and the beef one. I love the combination of the two. Although, I feel like one order is more than enough for one meal. Therefore, I end up with left overs for 2-3 days. Either way, very happy & satisfied. Ordered via door dash. I wish they were on Uber Eats.

Alejandro C.

Yelp
The food is excellent. Their seasoning and the flavor profiles of all the dishes are so good. The owners are very kinda and ingratiating. After a long day of work and running around the city, the restaurant felt like a quiet escape and oasis. I'm looking forward to my next visit and to bringing friends to experience the food and the ambience, and the owners too!

Yelp
I had a very delicious, VERY filling vegan dinner here for $20.00 with tip. I ate it all, but I could have easily asked for a to-go box and had a second meal for that price. They were about to close but still served me which I felt was very kind. I've always loved good Ethiopian food and this place past the test. I will return next time I have a desire for Ethiopian food. Simple, minimal but cozy atmosphere.

Yelp
We came here before then open. They let us in a few mins before the time they normally open the door. The veggie sampler, paired with that tangy sour bread, took my taste buds on a joyous adventure. Each bite was a medley of rich, aromatic flavors that left me thoroughly impressed. Now, let's talk about the price - it's surprisingly budget-friendly. This place may not boast a fancy ambiance, but there's a genuine warmth that comes from being embraced by the community. It's more than just a restaurant; it's a gathering place where the love for good food and camaraderie meld into an unforgettable experience.

Yelp
I don't have a lot of Ethiopian food in SF but this was very tasty, well spiced food. We tried the vegan sampler & siga tibs, which was a great way to try a little bit of everything. Vegan sampler comes with braised cabbage, red & yellow lentils, and collard greens; siga tibs is beef. The beef and red lentils were my favorite, both really well seasoned and flavorful. The injera texture is a sponge-y sour dough and I really liked the texture, especially combined with all of the other foods. Being a sour dough base, the injera does have a sour flavor that was a bit overpowering to me in some bites but with the right amount of lentils/meat was well-balanced. I really enjoyed the style of eating as everything is shared and you can create your own bites and flavor combos. Great vegetarian options and would recommend for anyone looking interested in good Ethiopian food.

Yelp
I'm stoked to have another Ethiopian option with tasty gluten-free injera! So far I've only tried a few vegan plates -- the sampler and mushroom tibsi, the former of which was good and the latter phenomenal! (My partner and I both love us some mushrooms!) We also had a (generously portioned) side of Ajibo. Best of all, the folks here are super friendly.

Yelp
This place by far my new favorite in SF. Best Ethiopian food in san francisco since many has closed! Was walking by and the smell made my stomach hungry and wonder what was so delicious! Glad i walked by and found this gem. Location isnt the greatest, but the food is definitely good. Ladies running the establishment was also friendly and gave large portions of injera! if you love ethiopian and want to give it a try. Highly recommend! Selection is limited, but definitely try the vegan sampler and beef! Price is extremely cheap too!

Yelp
Location: The restaurant is located on a busy street with limited street parking in front of the restaurant. There is an amazing metered parking spot right in front of the restaurant BUT there is a sign that you can't park there Mon- Friday before 7PM. More street parking is around the corner, but we drove around a bit until we found a free spot. There are multiple homeless encampments in the area, so the restaurant is kept locked during business hours and an employee will open the door when they see you. Food: Taste was amazing. We ordered the veggie platter which came out in a big bowl on top of injera. For the main dish we ordered beef, which was placed in the middle of the bowl and my only qualm was that this portion was extremely tiny. The beef and veggie platter was about the same price, $17-$18 each, but the portion of beef looked similar to the portion of one item from the veggie platter. Ambiance: The restaurant is very neat--almost corporate looking. The seating area is small with only 5 tables as pictured. You order at the counter and seat yourself. The place is very casual and there is even a self self water station.

Yelp
I've only enjoyed the food here, and the injera is thick and fluffy ! I always ask for awaze on the side (Ethiopian spices)
google avatar

Yelp
Continuing to revisit this little gem. Enjoyed the Injera with the Vegan sampler and Kitfo - Ethiopian beef tartare. Great as always, friendly service (family owned) worth the destination just two blocks off market Perfect if you're seeing a show at the Orpheum or Warfield.

Yelp
Walking in was incredible, smelled so good inside! The food was delicious and healthy. So glad I get to stop in for lunch from now on when I'm working at the office.

Yelp
I finally made it to Moya today and I'm sure glad I did! My coworkers and I ordered the veggie sampler + chicken, beef, and mushroom tibs. The flavors were amazing and service impeccable. I will definitely be back!

Dena L.

Yelp
I'm always looking for good Ethiopian food since having it in Ethiopia. One warning, you have to ask for the full teff injara if you are gluten intolerant, otherwise you get one that is mixed with wheat. The food was delicious. The owner is super nice. It's very low key. No alcohol is served. I would come back again when I'm in town.

Yelp
Moya is located in SoMa, San Francisco. The restaurant serves Ethiopian food to locals and the neighboring community. It opened its doors in 2009. The owner is Fana Alemayehu, who comes from the northern region of Tigray. This small, family-run Ethiopian restaurant has been around before and after the hardship from the pandemic of 2020, but their cuisines are here to stay. The layout of the restaurant is simple and tidy enough. It is not noticeably perfect in particular. There are enough seats inside to accommodate the ebb and flow of the place. Service was nothing short of great when I came. It is conveniently nearby Market St. and is a short walk from a BART station. I came here during lunch because it was near where I work. I also was recovering from wisdom teeth surgery and so I knew that Ethiopian food can be soft enough for me to eat. I like that the veggie/vegan sampler plate comes as a large portion. The flavors are bold and it is hard to say what was my favorite part. I recommend coming here for lunch, or even dinner, if you are craving Ethiopian cuisine.
google avatar

Dina G.

Yelp
Food: Superb Ambiance: Non-existent The gluten-free injera is springy and sour and tasty just like you want it. I loved the lentils in the vegan platter, the cabbage and beans was light and flavorful. I didn't like the collards -- the sour taste was off to me. The beef dish was fantastic. The chicken breast dish -- almost exactly the same as the beef but with chicken -- was dry. I appreciated the lettuce in the middle of the platter. When ordering for 3 people, I'd suggest 2 veggie combos and 1 meat dish. (We got 1 veggie combo, 1 chicken dish and 1 beef dish and it seemed quite unbalanced toward the meat side.) The ambiance is stark white walls. Order at the counter. They have coke and a couple of sparkling waters to drink. The table was dirty, as was the bathroom, which alternatingly had no towels or tp. The food is quite tasty so it's sad to see it feel like the owners don't care about keeping the inside of the restaurant up. But, the food is worth it if you're in the neighborhood!!

Yelp
Great service. Delicious vegan food. I've been here several times and I don't even live in the city.
google avatar

Keld L.

Yelp
Very tasty and filling! Probably the best tasting Injera bread I've had at an Ethiopian restaurant. Fluffy, spongy, and not sour. Very casual establishment.

Jonathan P.

Yelp
Pretty good non-pretentious gem on 9th. Injera was excellent, also veg. combo and spicy mushroom/tofu tibs! Shiro was was tasty but maybe too smooth and rich for my preference, but idk what true Ethiopian style would be. Takeout servings were good, we got several meals out of it. But very nice to have reasonable, tasty Ethiopian available in SOMA!
google avatar

Jessy M.

Yelp
Very nice staff. If you have not tried Ethiopian, please do so. Super good. I order the veggie combo and masir wot for me and my partner. They also give plenty of anjira bread. Staff is sweet and the food is great. The only reason I did not give it

Delia C.

Yelp
We had an amazing experience. The owner was super accommodating and helped us celebrate my birthday with so much ease and joy. We loved the food and are looking forward to coming back. We highly recommend this small but worthy restaurant!

Yelp
HUUUUUUUUGE portions! Super super delicious fir fir, and gamen! I'll for sure be either ordering from here again or visiting in person!

Logan S.

Yelp
Very delicious vegan options and very good portions. The people there are very kind. Worth it every time

Yelp
Big fan of Moya - it's my "go to" Doordash for Misir Wot. I am writing this review because there was an issue with my order today and the restaurant went **above and beyond** to send another delivery. They even sent along a dessert and a note. Go for the food - and keep returning for the excellent service!
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
In general, I think the east african food in the east bay is better but Moya is very solid and probably my favorite ethiopian place in SF. I had the veggie combo for lunch the other day and all the various dishes were great. I'll prob try a meat one next. As usual, the injera is very filling and can put you in a food coma on a workday and I had to struggle through mine.
google avatar

Myles C.

Yelp
the vegan sampler remains one of my "go-to"s, as it has everything that i like at a reasonable price. you know it's going to be a good meal when they hand you the container and you can feel the heft, sometimes you can turn it into two meals. will be coming here as long as they are open.

John B.

Yelp
The injeras are made from teff which is a BIG plus in my book. They were perfect. The place is clean and comfortable. This is a place where you order at the counter and they bring you the food, not a place where a wait person takes your orders. Additionally, you get your own water, so I'm never sure how much to tip when they make a single visit to the table to bring the food. I ordered the Chicken Tibs, extra spicy. They didn't skimp on the onions or the portion size, which was a plus. But they were not very spicy, which was disappointing. They were salty.
google avatar

Jake P.

Yelp
Love this place! I used to come here with coworkers a while back and it's really great to see them still going post-pandemic. Growing up in the area, I don't feel like I've ran into many Ethiopian places so this was a nice venture away from the norm! We got the veggie sampler, and the kitfo (beef) served over teff injera. I ordered extra injera since I'm a carbs gal, don't @ me. Served on a giant platter was a beautifully organized set of food. I'm an odd ball so I went around the circle trying everything individually and MAN -- this is the kind of food that really puts a smile on my face. Everything was spiced, season, and distinctly flavorful. I'm a fan of spice and we got medium but I think we could have turned up the heat just a pinch more. Thankfully they had chili powder handy. + the nice woman that worked there hooked it up with some extra injera (again I think she got the vibes lolol) Sometimes I really feel like San Francisco gets grimier everyday - specifically the SoMa area that Moya is in but they really make their mark - like an oasis in a desert. I'll definitely continue to come back!

Yelp
Came here on a Monday afternoon and the whole place was empty at 1 pm! Food: I got the shiro and it was quite a large plate and I definitely underestimated it at first. I loved the variety in flavors on the place from the injera to the chickpea soup to the salad it was a medley of textures. It tasted super fresh too and we got a lot of extra bread too! Service: Super quick 10 minutes or so for food to come out and the food was super warm. You order food at the front and they call it out. Ambiance: Very homey place with nice decorations and a tv that played repeating loops of people dancing and of nature. Felt like a good place to get work done. Overall, enjoyed the food and experience and really cozy vibes.

Annie B.

Yelp
I got the vegetarian sampler and Doro Tibs with a medium spice as well as there absolutely delicious Injera bread. When I came to pick up my order to go the lady told me that she put in some extra injera and when I tell you I don't know what was extra I mean it came with such a deliciously large amount. She also threw in a sample of the chickpea stew they make and it's top dollar! I highly recommend eating here. It's a small establishment making for a cozy maybe six tables? Two people per table you could squeeze in a third. 100% hands-down I would give it 10 stars if I could. When I gave her my name and she told me the order was ready I watched her take my food right out of the pan and put it into my to go containers. It took about 20 minutes but I ordered over the phone and by the time I got there it was being poured right in front of my eyes :-)
google avatar

Mo K.

Yelp
Best shiro in San Francisco and generous portions! An absolute must try if you enjoy Ethiopian food.

Sydney Y.

Yelp
Got the veggie platter for lunch! Huge portions and great variety. Would love to come back another time!
google avatar

Dan L.

Yelp
Solid Ethiopian with generous portions, especially for the veggie sampler. I'm giving this four stars because it's in a weak neighborhood for food; it's quite good for the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. The food here can't stand up to any of the top Ethiopian place in the bay area, like Walia, but if you're in this neighborhood, there aren't really any better options for the portion size and money regardless of the cuisine. Teo tastier, but you'll pay twice as much. You can get a tastier meal at Tortellino or Azalina's for the same price, but you'll get two thirds or half as much food. You can get food that's almost as good at Corridor, but it's going to cost a lot more because you're paying for the trendiness and "atmosphere", etc. The service is always quick and friendly. And, if you want to chat with friends, this place isn't trendy enough to have 80 dB music, so it's easy to have a conversation.
google avatar

Veena M.

Yelp
Got the vegan sampler on DoorDash and it was delicious. The spice has just a little kick which was nice.
google avatar

Lillian B.

Yelp
The food here is delicious and so flavorful. We ordered the veggie sampler to be able to try a bunch of their different stews and braised veggies as well as the siga tibs (a beef dish). It was served with a basket of Ethiopian flatbread which is a little tangy and pancake-like. All of the dishes paired so well with the flatbread and it was fun to be able to try so many different things. I'd definitely come back and recommend Moya to anyone looking for a good, humble meal.

Nandan S.

Yelp
Pros: * Location is really convenient - almost a hidden gem * Good seating. Good vibes, elderly lady who runs the restaurant on her own (I think) Cons: * Food is spicy, despite asking for mild/medium * Takes a good amount of time to arrive * It's expensive!

Yelp
Ordered delivery for lunch through UE, and food was packaged well and thoughtfully, with the à la carte entrées in their own generous packaging and the injera on the side. Haven't tried 100% teff injera (listed as the gluten-free option at other places), so opted for 3 extra orders (reading this back, 3 sounds like overkill, but the concept of there being "too much" injera is just...no) to go with each of my 3 entrees (misir wot, gomen, and siga tibs). However, I believe I received one 100% teff injera, and the rest were the regular ones (at least going off the texture and look--the one I believed was all teff was darker, less spongy). Wasn't an issue at all, since I don't have gluten sensitivities, and just wanted to try out the more robust, traditional version. Was also surprised to see an additonal order of rice and a half order each of kik alicha and atkilti wot. There was a note written on the lid to their container, but got mostly erased by condensation/travel. What a mystery! Unfortunate since it was probably something really considerate about substitutions in regards to the all-teff injera request/upcharges not being fulfilled. At least, that's what I'm projecting. Either way, was a wonderful surprise since I didn't go for the combo plate, which I consider my usual litmus test. Got it anyway, so thanks so, so much. Really appreciated it! Some discrepancies between the dishes I saw available on the UberEats menu and the one I saw online. Tried to order for pickup on their own site for lunch on a Wednesday, but the place showed up as closed until dinner, so went through Uber instead. Otherwise, would have ordered through the restaurant's own system to save them some $$! Was bummed to not see kitfo available on Uber at the time, but I understand if it's easier to just keep the staples. Kitfo is one of my hands down, top five favorite dishes, and based off all the deliciousness and care I received in my order, I have a very good feeling about Moya's kitfo. Will be around for dinner soon!

Yelp
Moya is a great find for delicious Ethiopian cuisine. For lunch we had a veggie sampler that included red lentil stew, yellow pea stew, collard greens, potatoes, carrots, green beans and cabbage as well as chicken and beef dishes were tender, full of flavor, and had the perfect amount of spice. We scooped everything up with their amazing injera bread. My favorites were : -Doro Tibs: Stir fried chicken marinated in a white wine sauce w/onion, tomato, garlic and berbere -Siga Tibs: Stir fried beef marinated in a red wine sauce w/onion, garlic and berbere -Kik Alicha: Yellow pea stew made with onions, garlic, turmeric and special spice mix -Misir Wot: Spicy red lentil stew made with a slow cooked chili sauce. I enjoyed the meal so much I had leftovers for dinner and lunch the next day and loved every bite. Per their advice, I put the injera in the freezer and just defrost it when you're ready to eat and it tastes perfect. Moya is a cute, cozy place with indoor seating, plus delivery is available via DoorDash, UberEats, etc. Per the owner, their entire menu is gluten free (the injera bread available with or w/o gluten).

Yelp
very generous portions and reasonable prices but very bland. perhaps I am just used to a different style but this did not resemble any of the Ethiopian food I have eaten anywhere.

Yelp
After giving me freebies twice, I'm compelled to write this review. Every new Ethiopian place I try in SF now, I always get the kitfo and the vegetarian sampler to get an idea of the restaurant's spices and seasoning technique. I think Moya and Tadu make the best kitfo in the city, but they're very different. I think Moya is more traditional with lots of ayib cheese, berbère powder on the side, and some sort of red spice (Mitmita perhaps?) to dip the meat in. Tadu incorporates the spice into the meat only. Anyways, Moya will end up edging Tadu out because while Tadu is delicious, they're a bit inconsistent (I try to order medium rare when getting delivery, but sometimes I get well done or raw, really runs the gamut). But Moya has been consistent so far. I really like the collard greens. Plump and juicy. Alicha tikhil gomen is good too, but I wished they used adult carrots instead of baby carrots; baby carrots have too much sweetness so it overpowers the potato and cabbage. Lentils were good, but nothing extraordinary. However, the first time I ordered from here, they gave me a free large Mexican coke and the second time, they gave me a whole portion (instead of a side) of the collard greens. Little things like this once in a while will make anyone a loyal customer. In conclusion, delicious kitfo and collard greens. This is a great staple dinner from any Ethiopian place, but Moya makes some of the best.

Yelp
Five great reasons to eat at Moya!: 1. Delicious 2. Vegetarian choices galore - not just "options" - I'm talking half the menu! 3. Friendly owner 4. Black-owned business 5. Very convenient after a workout at FitnessSF MidMarket, or before a show at Oasis. (If you go in between the gym and Oasis, hit me up, you and I need to know each other)
