I'd heard about Navio previously, but until I saw a video about the weekend buffet, dining there was just a fleeting thought. Once I saw the buffet highlighted recently, I made it a priority to go there. The weekend buffet at Navio is definitely an indulgence at $199 per person, but for my foodie friend and I, it was worth it.
Since we knew the format of the 2-hour buffet and that you could order two items at a time during the 1 1/2 hour savory portion of the meal, I had initial concerns the time would be too short, but that wasn't the case. We had time for six, count them 6 rounds of food within that time frame!
Gabby and Pedro took great care of us and brought out food and beverages quickly without feeling rushed. We appreciated the complimentary mimosas and really enjoyed the quality of the food. Speaking of food, let's get to it. Oh wait, my friend has a slight dairy sensitivity, and she shared that with the hostess. Each time food was brought out, Pedro & Gabby made sure my friend's portion had limited dairy.
Round 1: I started with the Caviar Tasting which came with Sturgen, Smoked Trout, and Paddlefish roe. I loved that smoked Trout roe! For my second item, I ordered the Pan Seared Scallop with Truffle Polenta w/Basil Oil. My friend started with Blue Prawns w/Cocktail Sauce & the Wagyu Beef Slider with Shiitake Mushrooms, Smoked Pork Belly, and Black Garlic Aioli. What a GREAT START for both of us! As soon as our first items were served, we ordered our second round.
Round 2: For our second round, I had the Lobster w/Beurre Blanc & some of that yummy smoked trout caviar. I also ordered the Glazed Salmon w/Sweet Peas and Bok Choy, which was cooked perfectly. The salmon had crispy skin with perfectly moist flesh. My friend had the Scallop and a Chocolate Chip Pancake w/Banana, Maple Syrup, & Whipped Cream. Again, we were both thrilled with our selections.
Round 3: This time I had the Blue Prawn Cocktail & Lamb Rack w/Sweet Peas & Fresh Mint. Oh man, that lamb chop was AWESOME! It was smoky, tender, and the sauce was delicious. My friend tried the Heirloom Tomato w/Nectarine & Roasted Sesame Vinaigrette and the Beef Tenderloin w/Port Wine Reduction (with shaved truffles, nonetheless). Another round of all winners.
Round 4: For my next round, I got my own Wagyu Slider. I'm not usually a huge slider fan, but this was next-level crazy good! The meat was flavorful, cooked perfectly medium rare, had a thick slice of smoked pork belly, and delicious Shiitake mushrooms nestled in a soft bun. I also got my second order of a perfectly seared scallop w/a hint of truffle. My friend got her second round of pancakes. This time they gave her two of the mini pancakes w/crunchy spheres of chocolate, a slice of banana, whipped cream, and syrup. For her second item, she chose the Belgian Waffles.
Round 5: This was the only round of disappointments for me. I had the Half Moon Bay Benedict (crab & spinach) and Rigatoni Carbonara Bacon Croutons & Parmesan Cheese. The rigatoni looked like it was topped with a bunch of country gravy but it was super light, like it was aerated in a siphon. The sauce was super black pepper heavy and the lardons were really hard to eat since they were so overcooked. Maybe it was intentional since the menu said they were bacon croutons, but I did not enjoy that dish at all. My friend had the Marin County Cheese Tasting w/fig jelly and dried fruit. For her second item, she got the Aquaponic Farm Leaves w/Purple Radish & Cherry Vinaigrette.
Round 6: My friend was too full, but I wanted to make sure I got my money's worth, so I ordered a third scallop, a second lamb chop, and my friend squeezed in one last order of glazed salmon for me.
We were both stuffed by the time our last half an hour and the dessert tower was served. It's okay because none of the desserts were that appealing to me. I mean, there was no chocolate dessert. How can you not have any chocolate option?
Dessert aside, our brunch was outstanding. Yes, there were two items I wasn't fond of, but everything else was delicious and high quality. Service was excellent and we definitely got our money's worth. Don't be naive. Navio is in the Ritz-Carlton, so in addition to the $199, tax, and tip, you should also know there is a $50 valet fee. Each of us walked away paying $300, but we'd do it again and you should too.
