I was very excited to go to this restaurant after seeing it on social media because I always go out to support new Peruvian businesses. The restaurant looks great both the front bar area and back dining room and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. So there are no complaints on the service and atmosphere. The food on the other hand is a different story.
Nuyores has a small menu and my friends and I ordered the watermelon ceviche, ceviche classico, charred octopus, the crispy pork belly all to share. The one thing you have to be prepared for at this restaurant are their small servings sizes.
The charred octopus is $29 and all you get (in our case) was one tentacle it wasn’t very big I have to say it was small to medium size. As for the taste of the octopus for me it was missing the char taste that I was expecting I think the sauce they put on top of it either masked the char or the tentacle was not charred enough.
The watermelon ceviche which I feel was a semi decent serving size for $23 was lacking in flavor I was expecting something a bit more bold and vibrant in terms of taste but was left unsatisfied.
The crispy pork belly at $24 was a strip that I estimate was 3 quarters of an inch thick and maybe 6 to 7 inches long. The flavor was good (better than the octopus) the carapulcra sauce and the tomatillo sala criollo paired well with the pork belly but there was no crispy crackling on the pork belly (that I noticed) it was crispy due to the searing of the pork belly. I felt that this dish would have benefited from a salt brine and if it was brined it should have brined longer and they should have found a way to introduce the crispy pork crackling to the dish.
The Ceviche Classico at $28 was the only standout of what we ordered. You tasted freshness when you bit into the fish. The citrus flavor with crispy sweet potatoes and cancha, and sweet yellow corn paired perfectly. The serving size was decent not too small or too large.
Overall the flavors of the dishes we had at Nuyores were mild, which is not typical of Peruvian food. Peruvian food has bold flavors that excite the palate Nuyores flavors from what I tasted are more mild and subtle (and there is nothing wrong with that if done correctly). I can tell that the head chef is trying to elevate Peruvian flavors but didn’t hit the mark with the dishes we had, except for the ceviche. But to be honest I can’t justify the cost of the dishes for the amount of food that is being served ($104 just food not including drinks, tax, or gratuity). If this is to be a tasting menu then it should be advertised as such and waiter needs to fully explain the menu and how to order. But if you are expecting a full meal by ordering an appetizer and main course then you will leave hungry.
Will I return to this Nuyores? To be honest I don’t know, it’s a big maybe for me.
