Stellar E.
Yelp
This is a newer Italian restaurant in Eugene, and has become famous for it's wood-fired, Neopolitan-style pizza. That was primarily why we came, and in all honesty - the pizza is incredible and the standout menu item, for sure. I can say with confidence it's been my favorite pizza in Eugene, and this carried the review to three stars despite the lack of service and what was an otherwise negative experience. We arrived for a celebratory dinner with a small party, happily ready to wait as we were aware reservations aren't offered, and it's a really popular spot. There really isn't anywhere to wait, however, so ensure your party is fine standing outside for however long it takes. The host was quite rude, and when I asked where they preferred I should wait, she suggested that "you can go anywhere you like, you can actually just go to a whole new restaurant if that's what you want." It was bizarre, as we were nothing less than friendly and upbeat and merely asking where to physically put our bodies while we waited. We were seated at the chef's table in back, which is more of a counter, offering a fun view of the kitchen. I loved the open, transparent style of the layout - seeing the kitchen is entertaining and very cool! - but there was zero engagement or acknowledgement from any staff so felt a little cold. You're instructed to order and pay with an app, which I hate, as many others do and has been mentioned in other reviews. There really isn't any "service" so it's hard to justify why you would tip. You're seated, given no information about the menu at all, left to stare at your phone and pick out items, and pay on your phone as well. Items ordered come out as they're made (by random staff members who simply drop it down at your table); this could be fun if you're into sharing, but otherwise made for a sort of messily timed dinner experience. The appetizers were mediocre - the white bean puree was very salty, and otherwise bland with very bitters green on top, the fried olives were tasty but again, very salty, and the burrata had very little cream inside and was quite a small portion for the price. We loved the pizza, though wished there was some way to mop up all the grease, and only linen napkins were offered. I tilted my pizza slices a little to the side to try to let the grease run out that way. The pasta dish we tried was good, and we liked the panna cotta. Just as there is no explanation for the menu (or even a paper menu to look at it), there is also no server who comes by to refill drinks, check on your order, or follow up regarding your food. You pour your own water, and even a soda turns out to be just a lukewarm unopened can, so don't expect a glass with ice or a straw. We did think the wine selection was excellent, and the pizza was stellar and worthy of the reputation Osteria DOP has in town. There is a line out the door for a reason, and it's the pizza! Otherwise, we found the service and attitude of staff off-putting, unfortunately snobby, and for this reason we won't return.
