The Best Restaurants in Richmond, Virginia | Eater DC

"Named one of Esquire’s best new restaurants in 2020, this Basque-influenced restaurant known for seafood and hard-to-find, easy-to-enjoy natural wines recently relocated to sexy new digs in Richmond’s Oregon Hill neighborhood. Chef Randall Doetzer uses garlic and paprika-tinged sauces to enhance seafood dishes." - Stephanie Ganz

Someone Please Stop Me From Eating All the Gildas at Adarra | Bon Appétit

"At this Richmond bar the gildas — the iconic Spanish skewers of fat white anchovy, pickled guindilla pepper, and a briny green olive — are a standout, typically accompanied by a glass of Emilio Hidalgo fino sherry. Chef Randall Doetzer has dialed them into a perfectly salty, buttery, lip-tinglingly sour, and slightly spicy bite by constantly tinkering with the three elements to achieve the right balance of fat, acid, and salt. Because the olives, peppers, and tinned anchovies are seasonal or depend on importers, he regularly swaps varieties (about three kinds of peppers, four kinds of olives, and two anchovy types since the dish debuted a few months ago), and the ongoing hunt for new ingredients is treated as part of the fun rather than a chore. The reviewer and a companion polished off six skewers and wished they had ordered many more." - ByElyse Inamine

Had a dinner that significantly exceeded my expectations yesterday! The service was excellent, with our knowledgeable waiter who helped us zero in on the perfect funky Orange wine for our palettes. For our table of two, we knew we wouldn’t finish a whole bottle of wine and our waiter reassured us he could cork our bottle at the end of the meal so we could take the rest home. The cooking technique over a wood fire was perfect - everything was perfectly cooked! Especially the trout we had (which the staff magically deboned) and the cut of pork from the neck that we had. Both fish and meat just melted in my mouth. I especially appreciated the vinegar sauce used on the trout. I discovered a new green vegetable I had never tasted, which was a little like broccoli rabe. Like the fish and meat, it too was perfectly cooked over the wood fire giving it a smoky taste. All our greens were served with crunchy nuts, adding flavor and texture to each bite. Even the dessert, an olive oil cake, was charred on the fire before getting topped with a whipped cream and cooked apples. The portions are very generous and we were full even before dessert, but pleased we still ordered the delicious dessert. It also helped that we could take home the large amount of leftover pork too. I will be returning next time I visit Richmond!

Everything at Adarra was executed to perfection. The wine program is very unique with no set menu. You talk with your sever, they bring over a selection of wine and give you a run down on each. We were offered one for my pallet, one for my wife's pallet and one in the middle. It was incredible and very intentional. Their menu changes often and we opted for two specials and two dishes off their menu. The meals seemed to be centered around sharing family style with the whole evening coursed out for maximum enjoyment. We finished the meal with the best cheesecake we've ever had and housemade ice cream and a glass of Port. Pro-tip from our server, if you get the ice cream let it sit for a few minutes before diving in. The environment and layout of the restaurant gives you a wholesome feel. You're surrounded by hand painted pictures and real candles scattered around. It almost feels as if you're in an old money estate with butler service and all. Being able to see the wood fire kitchen is an incredible touch. There's nothing like it in Richmond. Every employee gave us a smile when we passed them or came in contact with them. The owners are working along side their employees and nothing seems too small for them to take care of. If you get a chance to talk to the HR department I highly suggest it! (IYKYK)

Good food, small portions but ambiance is great. The Prawns do not come with a vegetable or a starch for 39 dollars for 4 prawns. The oysters were good but not worth it at its price point. The pork shoulder was dried out with not much flavor but the vegetables made up for it. If you like a place that you pay top dollar for small portions, this is your place!

A wood-fired kitchen, understated elegance, innovation, and a level of excellence in the kitchen that you wouldn't expect to find outside of New York or Portland. Adarra has a small, well-curated menu of Spanish / Virginia cuisine supported by a whole-animal station and lots of local sourcing. We loved bespoke art on all of the paneled walls (refreshingly, there are no bottles on the wall behind the bar). There were no weak spots on the menu that we sampled, but we especially loved the lamb belly, the sausage and the Basque cheesecake. Note that the portions are substantial -- this is not a tapas / pinxtos restaurant.

This was hands down a best meal experience. We were celebrating our anniversary, but this could be an “anytime you want to have a truly delicious meal” type of moment. Special occasion not necessary. The food is locally sourced and of high quality. We had scallops, served in an half shell on a bed of course salt. The salad, with wilted greens and some magical dressing. Prawns, order them. Question nothing. Pork chop with shrooms, greens, and cauliflower. It was one of the specials, and if they have it, order it. The Basque cheesecake and basil ice cream were perfect. While Basil ice cream may sound odd, it was smooth and creamy and paired with toasted hazelnuts. Delicious. Everything we had was like tasting real food again for the first time. Your tastebuds will perk up and ask, “what have you done? This isn’t mediocre or basic food. This is like a reawakening of what food should be!” The care and thought put into the food by Randall, was matched with the care and thought in the dining room and staff. Lyne suggested the perfect bubbles to complement the dinner. And she made everyone feel welcome and like you were eating at their home. If you’re in Richmond, make time for a reservation. You won’t regret it but if you miss it, you will. Thank you Randall and Lyne for an exceptional dinner and creating an experience we will be talking about!

Adarra is one of my favorite spots in all of RVA!!! Whenever someone visits, it's the go-to place to impress. The staff are not only kind but incredibly knowledgeable, the food is tasty and extremely fresh, and the ambience is ridiculously cool. I came here after seeing all of these review bombs (get a life). It feels like my duty to protect the ratings of one of the best restaurants I've been to! There's no doubt in my mind that Adarra truly deserves 5 stars across the board. I hope Google removes all the bot reviews 🙏

🤯🤯🤯 A couple we had met at L’Opossum a while back told me that I seem to be a real Foodie!! & Highly recommended Adarra. My wife & I are going on 34 years together & our DINKS! Double Incomes No Kids 😊 & We live to travel & dining experiences. After eating here a few times, ADARRA is now in my Top 3 Restaurants of all time in no particular order. Everything Every time we’ve been here has been Absolutely Perfection to the Highest Degree!! The Lamb 🐑 loin tonight was the best I’ve ever had and we spent 2 weeks in Iceland 🇮🇸 in 2023 & I ate me a whole lot 😳 The Crab 🦀 Stew we had tonight was mind Blowing 🤯. The Chef 🧑‍🍳 Owner hand picks Maryland Blue Crab under a Black or Blue light to insure 0 shells!! CMON 😊 I could write a book about this place but will just say. Exceptional Decor, Extremely Clean Top to Bottom, Impeccable Service, Over the Top mixed Drinks & a Chef who in my opinion is on his way to a Michelin Star ⭐️ My wife & I look forward to many more dining experiences here 😋

Really cool atmosphere. Great waitstaff, food was good but small portions. Need five entrees for two people so it gets a little pricey.
